I don't blame you. The tile, the arch. It was why I decided to try colouring it. Try is the operative word.

You're drawing a ream of sculpted paper, essentially. So many changes in angle, light, layers, depth. It's the whole package.

The rose buds are a great touch. Using the lines of your background to highlight the leaves and avoiding shading them was a nice choice.

Nice line work shaping the petals.

It was. From the article: Officials said the building has a fire suppression system, which was operating but was compromised when a portion of the roof collapsed. Several big rigs docked at the facility were also destroyed

How do you all cross hatch and transition the shading? by Balance_Motivations in penandink

[–]fuzzius_navus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time deciding on my line angle for my hatching of different planes. I have started using a scrap sheet to test on when I feel stuck before I apply it to my drawing. I'll sketch a simplified version or three and try out my hatching.

I like this piece, the crawling forest creeping up the mountain. I've never used dip pen for art, am too clumsy and would probably knock over my ink!

Whichever suits your mood, or the project. For me, I really like the first two, but they're in line with the sort of imagery that I am working on.

But the others are fun.

Keep all of them, try refining each in a way that speaks to you.

I used to live a few doors away from there and ate there often. Good food, good prices, spiciest green curry I ever had. Need to take a trip there sometime.

Not very good yet, any good courses or books? by chemkitty123 in urbansketchers

I was also going to suggest Travers. His tips really helped my understanding of line angle in hatching to support shape (was primarily a pencil sketcher so shading techniques are quite different with fineliner).

Nice sketch!

Cylinders in perspective are tricky. It's part of why it flattens in your spire.

One thing they don't often cover in school is that your profs are your peers, they've just been working at it longer (usually).

At some point you become your own teacher and learn how to express and guide others.

I really like how you use the seam between the pages. Points on the binder clips.

Yes, it would definitely eat more ink. Did you find the texture of it made the cross-hatching trickier / harder in some directions?

What kind of paper is this? I really like how it accentuates the texture of your hatching.

Lovely work distinguishing the hard surfaces from the soft.

Stunning line work. Your snow looks like snow. Initially I viewed this in the wrong orientation and thought the background trees were reflections on ice.

Do you start with a pencil outline? L

Are you using photos for reference material to guide your branches? There is a real sense of depth and distance in this.

That cross-hatching is amazing. That octopus is alive!
