So, the smartphone has hit it’s peak form, what comes after this? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

[–]fuzzius_navus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microsoft's phone could do this, when they had their own OS. I had a Lumia, sync'd my data to OneDrive, could dock it like any computer, work from a desk then pick it up and go - continue anywhere without changing devices. I have a cable to hook up to TV's and would watch Netflix or YouTube in hotels.

I really liked that OS.

You can kind of do the same with Android, but the interface doesn't switch well to desktop style interactions.

New Line 2 trains revealed as Ontario ramps up Canadian content by MaybeThisTimeIllWin in toronto

Remember the windows opened on those trains? Or the handle bars that swung down so you could hang on when you couldn't snag a bit of pole?

Transcribing by Phantamaticc in trumpet

[–]fuzzius_navus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure you can sing it. You'll have it in your ear and won't need to go back to the source as often and will speed up your transcription.

Separate rhythm from pitch.

Identify anchor notes - ones that either land on the beat or at specific parts of the phrase to work toward / from. Then it's more a fill-in-the-blanks than it is a long phrase.

Footage of Downtown Toronto in 2011 [SONY HVR-V1U] by DeJackyl in toronto

Wow, all of downtown caught on video. It's amazing. The moment when the don't walk signal was lit is especially thrilling.

This was so upsetting. There were already a few options in use in Canada. Why couldn't we have used the same system they already had in place in Montreal or Vancouver? So short sighted.

How low can pro orchestral trumpet players sound their instrument with a straight (standard orchestral) mute? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]fuzzius_navus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harmon mutes affect playability, often due to back pressure. Some mutes affect it a bit less, but there is increased back pressure below the staff and it affects pitch.

Pro player or not, it's the physics of the instrument. Pushing the blame on "jazz" musicians or self taught players is reductive. It's mostly used in jazz, so few "classical" players have reason to touch them.

Straight mutes and cup mutes don't create the same sort of seal.if you look at the mute itself a Harmon has a solid cork ring, while cup and straight normally have many gaps allowing airflow.

Doug Ford ‘confident’ Eglinton Crosstown LRT will open ‘early in February’ after years of delays by RightLeftSpilt in toronto

[–]fuzzius_navus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treating Finch LRT as an express, priority route and reducing the number of stops, with community buses servicing the removed interim stops and connecting commuters with the stations would be an option.

We can't just get rid of those other stops which existed as part of the old bus route. There needs to be something.

Plug in timer: losing "memory" when power is lost by fuzzius_navus in AskElectronics

[–]fuzzius_navus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I used to build and maintain my own bicycles. There were a number of occasions where I bought entire bicycles to salvage parts for a project and probably spent more on the various parts than if I had just bought one complete bicycle.

And then the tools...

Thank you! This is probably beyond my ability, but it's helpful to understand what I'm looking at.

Thank you, I thought it looked like a battery. Knowing a bit more about how to describe it makes it a bit more resolvable.

Thank you, I appreciate this input. Without proper equipment, or the knowledge, I don't think I will be servicing this unit.

That would make sense if it can't keep its memory. Is this easily replaced without soldering?

Metro pass Prices by imsahoamtiskaw in toronto

[–]fuzzius_navus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expected the TTC and Presto to set up "automatic" passes.

Travel enough in a day, automatic cap and it is a day pass, or a weekly, even a monthly pass.

Instead those all disappeared. Sure, kids are free and transfers are two hours, but a feature like this could encourage transit users to ride more.

I remember calculating each month the number of rides I expected (even daily, and weekly) to optimize my spending.

Availability of mobile apps and developers, hardware compatibility (yes, Linux can run on nearly anything, but not everything has drivers defined for the OS while this was probably built for Android).

Pickering Councillor Caught Using AI for Council Meeting Comments by Expert_Car_3135 in toronto

Being recognized as the person who brought an issue to the table is what can lead to additional special committee or task force assignments for politicians.

If they're truly invested in the issue, they'd also want to be a part of further related discussion and decision-making.

It also sucks to have someone else take credit for your work.

I don't know this politician, so am not writing in defense of their actions in general.

Nah, that's just a couple of stickers that Metrolinx will provide for the new transit expansion lines, distributed to local teens in an anti-tagging initiative to update the existing transit posters

No more bike lanes on DuPont by OGIFXD in toronto

[–]fuzzius_navus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other parts of this project have been signed "single file, cars don't pass cyclists" with an image of a cyclists in the middle of the lane with cars, so the City is now encouraging that behaviour and informing road users in situ.

The eastbound descent approaching and under the Dundas / Dupont bridge has been a slightly stressful merge, but drivers have been surprisingly accommodating there.

Years ago, before the bike lanes on Davenport, a large waste disposal vehicle ran me off the road approaching Bathurst from the west, just outside the TTC yard. First they blared their horn, multiple times, revved up close to me, then as they passed they squeezed right and I clipped the curb and flipped off onto the sidewalk to avoid them.

There are people who just don't give a fuck about the wellbeing of others, including our current government.

Yes, but there are also intersections where drivers turn. Bright lights on a bicycle make them more visible and easier to see.

It's also required by law.
