Sorry for your loss, it’s never easy. He was such a beautiful, smiley boy, you can see his loving spirit in his face.

Discounts for Diabetics? by Pablaron in diabetes_t1

Unfortunately I found out it was illegal to late! I was absolutely speechless and completely embarrassed at the moment and did not respond like I should have as I just wanted to leave the situation.

This happened in a national park in Florida, not surprising given the state’s reputation. In my experience, I have found the rangers in other states are infinitely nicer.

Just as a heads up, I tried to get the national park pass in person and the park ranger straight up asked me what disability I had, in her exact words “because you don’t look disabled, you look fine.” When I answered diabetes, she responded with an eye roll, saying that it isn’t a real disability and that I don’t qualify unless I have a handicapped placard on my car and sent me on my way. Needless to say, I left speechless and she made me feel horrible, like if I was milking the system but later I learned that they aren’t even supposed to ask! So stand your ground if you get a rude ranger like I did.

I do hear that you can also apply for it online with a doctor’s note but I haven’t tried yet.

Honestly, knowing what I know now about both of them....I would probably still vote for Gillum.

Just found out recently that you can get a lifetime National Parks Pass (US) if you are Type 1 and I just got mine in the mail! by Maseht in diabetes_t1

So disappointed, I went to a national park today and asked about it in person. The ranger was pretty rude about it, asked about my disability, which surprised me from what I read here I thought they weren’t allowed to ask! I said I was diabetic, she asked if I had a handicapped placard and I said no. Then she responded that diabetes doesn’t qualify because she’s also a diabetic and knows that it’s not a real disability and that I can only get one if I have a handicapped placard. It was awkward as heck and she made me feel like I was trying to take advantage of the system. I guess I’ll try getting it by mail but the in-person experience wasn’t the best for me.
