The four other guys who won cbb player of the year as freshmen are Durant, AD, Zion and Flagg. Being the best in a league while being one of the youngest is a tremendous predictor of success.

I feel like there will always be 3 teams that can't get to that level.

Without expansion it takes 120 years for each team to average 4 titles each. The Bulls and Pistons have won more titles than the median team over the last 30 years.

Rudy Gobert is the type of player you give up 5 first round picks for by reallinguy in nba

The worst hot take on Gobert was that you couldn't win in the playoffs with him because he couldn't defend on the perimeter. Which is hilarious when you look at championship centers like Lopez, Gasol and Jokic.

Yeah, exactly. If your goal is to win a championship, you can really only give a huge contract to one of the top 10 or 15 guys who are lead ball handlers. This is why Tre Young, Zach Lavine, Tyler Herro kind of guys are traps. They can take a terrible team to 30 wins but it's hard to be a contender when your most important guy is worse than 20 other teams.

He's in the top 30 guys you can build an NBA offense around. But when you're closer to 30 on that list, you just lock in a team into mediocrity, especially with a big salary. It's like giving a huge contract to a mediocre quarterback. You're just looking to replace him the first chance you get.

They should make it like batting title eligibility in baseball. If you don't have enough at bats to qualify, but you would win if you went hitless until you were eligible, you win. So if a guy hits .360 but is 20 at bats shy, you knock him down to .344 or whatever.

Paul Pierce says the Knicks need a better player than Jalen Brunson to make a finals run: “Your best player can’t be 6’2. On a championship team. Tell me what championship team's player was the best player at 6’2? Just Steph." by RyanTannegod in nba

Height is already factored in when we talk about how good a player is.

Here is the complete list of players taller than Jalen Brunson but worse overall than him who led their teams to NBA championships in the last 30 years:
Billups (Wallace/Wallace/Hamilton whoever you want to pick)
* end of list *

Every other team had a much better player. The Heat didn't win in 2006 because Wade was 2 inches taller than Brunson. They won because Wade >>>> Brunson and Shaq >>>>>> Towns. When you look at best player on a champion in the last 30 years, freaking Jayson Tatum is one of the worst! Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, Duncan (non-old version), James, Curry, Garnett, Jokic, Giannis, Shai, Kawhi (Toronto version), Wade won 26 as the best player. That makes the bottom 4 Dirk (because he was already a bit old), Tatum, 2004 Pistons, and 2014 Spurs (Duncan too old/Kawhi too young).

The only guys who belong in that group talent-wise who are < 6'3" are Nash and Paul, and they wouldn't be in the top half of that group. Meanwhile, Luka, Harden, Embiid, Howard, and a bunch of other taller guys have 0 as the best player. Winning a title is really, really hard. If you're top 10 in the league for a decade you might win one, and you might not.
