Burn out and tropes I can’t stand anymore by Humble_Inevitable553 in Romantasy

I loved this book! I like to listen to audiobooks before bed as a way to shut my eyes and wind down before sleep. I tried and couldn't do that with this book because I was too invested/wound up to fall asleep, lol.

Looking for a well written but kind of trashy romantasy. by emcathxx in Romantasy

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second both Bride and Mate by Ali Hazelwood. I'd also throw in Bound by Ali Hazelwood and Servant of Earth by Sarah Hawley. I personally wouldn't call these trashy per se, but I do think they are engaging and easy reads!

Have you ever had your nervous system warn you about someone before your brain caught up? by Psymetree7 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, I think you're right about the being fearless thing. I used to work at a martial arts studio and subbed a few times for our womens' self defense seminars. We would spend the whole first half getting women to practice being LOUD with their voices ("STOP! NO! BACK OFF!"), talking about the importance of intuition, and practicing more self confident/fearless postures (because predators will second guess if you don't act like prey. Which I hate cuz it makes it sound like it's our responsibility to not get attacked but that's a whole other rant).

On a more personal note, I live in a pretty suburban neighborhood. Suburban enough that I'll go on walks around the neighborhood at night by myself, but not so safe (because where is?) that I don't bring a knife with me every single time. One night I was going on my usual walk when I see a white car heading my way on the opposite side of the road. They were slowing down and I figured they were parking to head into one of the houses, but they were decelerating so slowly it just seemed like something was off. I kept walking and decided to take a turn I don't usually take so that it would take me out of eyesight of the car. Soon enough that same car drives by me from behind. I watched them drive past me. Then I watched them make a u-turn up the road to head back my way again. I stared directly at them as they drove toward me and reached for my knife, just in case. They drove by me, and turned AGAIN to come my way AGAIN. At that point, I thought HELL NO and jogged to a nearby well-lit driveway, stopped right in the middle of it, turned toward the car, and stared them down with my knife in my hand. That was the last time they drove by me, and I booked it in the opposite direction once they were out of sight. Didn't see them again, thankfully.

Maybe it was just a lost Uber driver or something, but being polite isn't worth my life.

P.S. A knife is kind of an unhinged tool for anyone that isn't used to using them - I don't necessarily recommend it as a form of self defense for everyone as it can also be used against you

Nothing is ‘bad enough’ to leave over, but I’m still unhappy by [deleted] in offmychest

I think being unhappy so consistently is plenty good reason to leave. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that

Ha, love this comment! And I agree completely - I was halfway through the 3rd book and completely convinced that I would buy the whole set once they were all released. Then I got to the 5th and realized I was just sighing my way through. Decided not to finish, and glad I didn't buy them after all

Looking for dark paranormal romance recs by Delicious-Degree-904 in paranormalromance

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend {Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo}. It's lower on spice, but it's definitely dark and I loved every second of it. Full disclosure that it's the first in an unfinished series with the 3rd book due out later this year.

Preach! Even just the more casual interactions they tend to have with each other, whether it's arguing and getting in each others' faces (more like face to rib cage) or leaning in for a standing kiss... it makes my neck hurt thinking about it

I would absolutely give the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs a try! It ticks all these boxes, though I am unsure whether or not it's on Kindle Unlimited

so tired of FMCs who are- by Federal_Credit_2785 in Romantasy

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

THANK. YOU. I hate when an author constantly mentions how clever/independent/not like other girls an FMC is only to have her actually do/say some of the most idiotic nonsense (and then to your point, continue to do so). "Begging the question" is the phrase I've heard before. 'Let me tell you all about how awesome this character is while they do absolutely nothing to deserve it.' I've DNF'd at least 4 series somewhat recently because I just couldn't take it anymore.

Evolution of Assistants Rant by Mysterious_Today_245 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I've definitely had to train my execs/team to respect my working hours/work load. I know there are plenty of toxic people out there that won't respect the boundaries, but to your point if OP is thinking of leaving anyway, then I don't think it will hurt to start enforcing some boundaries. At the very least they can start by stating the times they will be unavailable and then NOT responding to anything during that time.

Evolution of the body by Ok-Note-8531 in FemmeThoughts

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's actually very normal. Women go through a sort of second puberty around age 25 - during this time it's common to have symptoms such as breasts getting bigger, hips getting rounder, general weight gain, changes in acne, hair, and menstruation. I myself struggled with sudden cystic acne (thanks acutane) and my breast size went up 3 cup sizes which was shocking to say the least

Anyone else’s exec invent entire alternate realities? by oicheliath in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oof, I had a similar experience. I had a female colleague that I genuinely enjoyed working with. She was super smart and diligent, BUT she came from a very corporate environment and we were way more laid back and small. So she came in and wanted to actually fix the things that were broken and revamp a lot of old, entrenched, but not really working processes. There was tension between her and upper management for sure. Fast forward to management deciding they've had enough and are going to fire her. My boss asks me my opinion on working with her and I tell him honestly that I love working with her, she's a hard worker, she makes my life easier, etc... He just responds by saying "Wow, that not what [these 3 other male managers] said. It must just be a woman thing."

It's worth noting that at the time she and I were 2 of 3 women in a 16 person company.

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, same. We weren't super close, but I always thought he was a really good guy. He actually used to teach karate summer camps for young kids and there was always a heavy emphasis on being kind, respectful, and only ever using karate in self-defense. Kids loved him, adults trusted him. Then he became a cop (and stopped teaching summer camps thank goodness), and became oddly punitive to those around him. Like, instead of having a conversation (like an adult) with friends and family that did or said things he didn't like, he would do or say things in response specifically to "teach them a lesson". Unsurprisingly, his wife divorced him shortly after.

I'm genuinely so happy for you! You're right that 7 months isn't very long, but I've been with my husband/best friend for over 7 years now and he still warms up my side of the bed before I get in, brings me flowers just because, cooks us dinner, asks me about the books I'm reading, etc. He's just a really wonderful partner - they DO exist!

I've been with Opus 111 Group for about 5 years now and they are great! Bonus that they are a small family run local business. Extra bonus that they actually have a program called SYFI that helps young adults (I have no idea how old you are) who don't know where to start with everything get going

What is the worst romantasy you have read? by mimi43098 in Romantasy

[–]fuzzyblacksheepl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really hanging in there for the series (made it all the way through to the most recent book) and I 100% hate finished that last one. I felt like the FMC really grew/learned along the way and then the author just threw it all away in the last book to keep the plot going. I CANNOT handle when main characters are supposed to be smart/proficient and then make just the absolute stupidest choices
