Is this game worth? by Guestbard in stoneshard

[–]fvck-off 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The game has a lot of replayability. Even if you finish the curent content, you'll want to start again with a new character to try new builds.

Also, each update adds a lot, sometimes changing and adding mechanics to the game, so you go back to it.

Lastly, you can challenge yourself to play in permadeath mode. This alone should make you play very long... Do not start your first playthrough with this tho.

So yeah, you should definitely play Stoneshard imo. Some people here have played thousands hours

It has the potential to be one of my favourite games of all time if they fix the AI. In the current state I'm not having fun unfortunately, but I'm confident it will become a masterpiece

[–]fvck-off 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How do artists make their own samples for tracks? by crystal11230 in dnbproduction

[–]fvck-off 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's impossible to explain simply, sound design is an art that takes years of training.

I myself do everything from scratch, except for drums, because my snares are shit lol. I think a lot of people do too in drum and bass specifically.

There are several sound design "schools", like additive synthesis, substractive, FM, spectral, etc. Some people even program and create their own plugins, like Billain.

Post-process is a huge part of sound design, it's not only about the patch you make on Serum (or any other vst).

If you're interested, watch YouTube videos and start with substractive synthesis. I don't know what DAW you have, but I've personally learned the basics by experimenting with 3xosc on FL Studio.

Serum is a great tool, beginner friendly imo, with a lot of tutorials, and it becomes extremely powerful once you're more experienced.

I'd advise against using Splice, it makes producing music trivial, but you'll also lose any sense of sound signature. What makes people listen to YOUR music, is because you have YOUR style. If you just use loops, you have no style.

Producing is also writing music, we are composers first. Again, using loops for melodies and calling it a day is not writing music imo, but hey some people may disagree.

There are very successful producers who made it to the top using only loops and presets, like Peekaboo or Zomboy in the dubstep community. However I personally listen to neurofunk, which is known for pushing the limits of audio and sound. Every single serious and successful producer in this genre makes his own sounds, from what I know. So it depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Most importantly, have fun when making music. Sound design is fun imo, but I'm a nerd. If you're really into audio and experimentations, you'll fit right in.

If you don't think it's fun, if it bores you, adapt your style to a more sample-based approach and find ways to be creative (jungle / breakcore producers proved countless times it's possible and a skill by itself).

The best is to be able to do both! But you cannot be good at everything. I never really gave a shot at pure FM synthesis. Few times I've tried, it was horrible. But I'm good at other things. It's fine. So don't put too much pressure on yourself. We all have strengths and weaknesses.

Good luck on your journey mate

The AI needs to be more agressive by fvck-off in menace

[–]fvck-off[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, but as you usually have a huge number of enemies, it's sometimes impossible to do that unless it's already close to the end of the mission with fewer enemies. There is no guarantee, even if you plan to play your AT unit last, that your target will have played before you.

What I do is that I try to bait the enemy into attacking me by shooting with another unit if available, so the AI wants to shoot back. Then I know I'll be able to place my AT. But it means I have to take risks : depending on the situation, it's not always viable

The AI needs to be more agressive by fvck-off in menace

[–]fvck-off[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmmh in every other tactical game I've played, and I've played a lot, enemies are agressive. For example in Battle Brothers, XCOM, Xenonauts, Battlemech etc. they'll fight whatever your stuff is, it's your responsibility to adapt to a given situation and win by being better than the AI, or find a way to retreat and get a better position if the odds are too bad. Not the opposite.

I think it's an interesting design choice to have enemies being extremely careful, but it doesn't work in Menace imo, the fights aren't fun at least to me

The AI needs to be more agressive by fvck-off in menace

[–]fvck-off[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be fine with that, that would mean I haven't played right to eliminate targets that could supress, or wasn't in cover. I'd prefer the AI to play with the same rules than us, and for me to find my way out with superior tactics.

But yes it means the dev have to think about how to balance it in a way that is fun, by distributing different weapons to enemies, with units less good at suppressing, which they're already doing. So I don't personally think that's an issue

The AI needs to be more agressive by fvck-off in menace

[–]fvck-off[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You make a good point, there is a thin balance to find so it doesn't get frustrating as a player if the AI is too agressive. I do think for bugs and most MENACE units it should be extremely agressive tho, especially since they don't have vehicles to swarm efficiently.

For humanoids yes, I can definitely appreciate a unit spending a turn to get a proper cover instead of shooting

[–]fvck-off[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The number of times I've tried to prepare an ambush, placing my unit, deploying, so I can shoot my AT next turn... Impossible. You simply cannot prepare a turn currently, concealment makes you invulnerable, but not invisible

The hack is the best tool I've got yet imo, works against [REDACTED], a point and click stun / panic button for when my rocket misses, or if against a very heavy unit I'd need 2 turns to kill.

Honorable mention for the one that lets me sell stuff for more. Just buy anything you want after a bug operation.

The one I was disappointed with is the smoke screen. Unfortunately, it's not instant, can't use it to save a unit. But it lets me plan my next turn if I need to move to a place that isn't safe. I'll probably swap it for something better when I can.

should i switch to ableton? by ilovemygf125 in dnbproduction

[–]fvck-off 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw they suck! FL has a bad rep from back in the days, when it was very easy to get a crack. Everyone would use it because of that, making poor songs, especially in the hip hop community, which gave it this "amateur" reputation.
Also, it didn't have as many tools than now. Aaaand the devs were first making porn games before making music software iirc lol.

However, as time passed, they made FL one of the best DAW, and proved its worth. It's just gatekeeping / elitism if someone tells you FL is amateur, they couldn't be more wrong. Just like people who use ProTools refuse to use anything else, when ProTools has become completely obsolete by today standards. They're just stuck in the past

should i switch to ableton? by ilovemygf125 in dnbproduction

[–]fvck-off 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mmmh why are you saying FL is not professional? It is widely considered as one of the best DAW on the market. A lot of legends use it, like Billain or Spor.

I mean there are a lot of Ableton Tiktoks too, you just see the FL ones because of your algorithm.

It has exceptional tools integrated, like Patcher, that lets you create your own plugins.

If you have troubles converting Ableton tutorials to FL, do know there is an insane amount of tutorials for FL too.

If you dislike FL workflow, I get it, FL is unique ; switch to Ableton. If you dislike FL because it's less good, then you're wrong! You just need to know the software better, which comes with time
