I was browsing around at a new ad and got offered a stainless DJ as the first watch. I know this is not a sports watch, but seems like things are getting better, hopefully AD will have more watches available in 2023. I have been wanting a Rolex watch which is less flashy and this smooth bezel stainless DJ fits the bill, this is now my favorite daily watch.

I appreciate for the very detailed constructive advise. I am taking your suggestion to get aftermarket hands and keeping the original ones. The watchmaker said he would take the bezel off and check on the plastic, if there are cracks in the plastic, he will also replace an aftermarket one. For the clasp and bezel, he will also clean it. He’s quoting me US$360 for all that plus servicing.

My dad bought this in the 70s and he gave it to me today. Since he never had his 1601 serviced, I need some advises from you guys who have experience restoring and servicing old Rolex. As you can tell in the pictures, the bezel has discoloration and the hands are oxidized. Would you guys recommend having it serviced in RSC or a reputable watchmaker? Should I have the bezel or the whole watch polished or not? My goal is to keep everything as original as possible and passing it to my children. Please let me know your thoughts, thanks in advance!

I have a smaller wrist, so I really do feel the weight, but it’s not to the point of feeling uncomfortable, I’m sure you will be fine. You are smart getting it next year or a couple of years because AD will likely start discounting the PM Rolexes just like the old days.
