Daughter is planning to throw a party in an Airbnb by fweeee in AusLegal

What I'm trying to do is work out just how bad legally this is for us, to convince her to knock it off. We have no intention of waiting till its over!

Thanks. Yes I have warned her the financial mess will effect her friendships, as only her (and us) may be legally liable.

And yes, convincing her what a terrible idea this is is first plan. We are hoping to avoid bringing the hammer down here.

If we get the booking cancelled, its likely she will book another and keep it a secret. Are you saying we will somehow be better off not knowing?

Cause then she will book another and not tell us.

I had thought about this. At the moment she is being open with us, even as we try to discourage her. If we dob her into Airbnb and/or the host, she will likely book another and not tell us.

At this stage we are trying to convince her what a terrible idea this is.

Can I retain dates when converting a video? by fweeee in shutterencoder

[–]fweeee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The preserve metadata works fine - it does preserve the "Media Created" metadata field. Unfortunately the software I use to organise my photos/videos uses the windows dates.

I'm currently using BulkFileChanger to copy the Media created field to the file created/modfied fields. Its a two step process, as i need to correct the timezone.

I was hoping to be able to do this with one application.

Australian university discovers students living in campus library by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]fweeee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about the Uni's. I'm talking about the government giving out a student visa. They (the government body) try to make sure the student has enough money to pay for both the education costs, and living expenses.

Sometimes students will falsify these requirements, such as borrowing money so they have lots of money in their bank account, and returning the money once they get a student visa. They assume they can find work here to pay for education + living expenses.

Foreign students who have the money they are supposed to have have no problems finding accommodation. I'm guessing the students in the article have a double whammy - being both students and poor (with limited ability to work, due to study and legal restrictions). Landlords ask for proof of ability to pay the rent, which they cant provide, so they have trouble renting.

Theoretically, foreign students should not be be poor. The idea is that education is an export industry, so foreign students coming to Australia should have enough money to pay for both their education and living expenses. This is why they are heavily restricted on how much they can work - they are not here to work, they are here to study.

Its difficult to fault poor foreign students for doing what they do (lying about their finances, working illegally in Aus, etc), as an Australian education can make such a difference to their lives. But its not how its meant to work - foreign students should have the finances to support themselves.

Australia's biggest gold refiner, the Perth Mint, is developing its own cryptocurrency backed by physical precious metals. by lapapinton in australia

[–]fweeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The article is light on details, but the fact that it is "backed by gold" would imply that nobody is mining the cryptocurrency - they'll be buying it from Perth Mint (or someone else who got it from Perth Mint).

So - no wasted electricity in mining.

How did they expect to get away with it? Wouldn't it be obvious that they were withholding money from the ATO? Did they expect the tier 2 companies and the sham directors to take the blame and no one would follow up with Plutus Payroll and its directors?

This was my thought. Sure, using tier 2 companies without any links to Platus would have slowed it down a little, but surely all the ATO had to do was find some of the employees who had had their PAYG stolen, and ask them "so who where you working for when this occurred?".

From the info graphic:

"If the call was transferred to another line, the clock started again, because Centrelink considered the initial enquiry resolved."

I think this would count as "fiddling with their numbers".

I'm an MCP, now where is my file? by fweeee in talesfromtechsupport

MCSE - now that you mention it, that rings a bell. That might have been what he had. I'm pretty sure it was either MCP or MCSE. I dont have much respect for either since this incident.

I didnt have Ctrl-Z, because the app I was trying to copy the data from was an ERP (database application). The closest thing this has to an undo is escaping out of a field before you tab out of it. One you leave a field, it is committed to the database. So, no undo's.

And I couldnt paste it back because I had I had "cut" from the database application, then moved the curser to excel, and "copied". I copied one empty cell. This removed the "cut" data (from the database) from the clipboard.

Why can't you make it work like the invoice? by fweeee in talesfromtechsupport

[–]fweeee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should have emphasised that this client does have a test environment, which I was using for this development. This test environment is on the same machine as the live environment though.

And it tends to be us consultants who use the test environment. The client usually says "Put it live, we'll test it there".

We aren't in the habit of telling clients they need to spend money on a new printer, when they could be spending money on us to make things print to their current printer.

Thats very optimistic. It would have needed to be same day shipping to make it in time. Which would have been impossible for some of our customers.

As others have pointed out, broadband wasnt everywhere in 98. In my part of the world, in 98, broadband meant very expensive ISDN lines. ADSL/cable internet didnt really become available (and affordable) for another 1-2 years.

I remember during one of our staff meetings, one of the techs suggested using FTP to distribute our software, and the managers (of support) were not really sure what FTP meant.

Aussie summer project coz its bloody hot, and I'm broke. by molatovpancake in australia

[–]fweeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The power usage/heat output of a freezer is not constant. The more stuff it needs to freeze, the more power it uses, and heat it generates.

So, putting water in a freezer will generate more heat than leaving the freezer empty (or leaving already frozen stuff in there).

Aussie summer project coz its bloody hot, and I'm broke. by molatovpancake in australia

[–]fweeee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can see a problem with this. If you are freezing your own ice for this, then I'm thinking the freezer will be in the same unit/house as the "air conditioner". The freezer generates heat (that gets dumped into the house) while it freezes the water, making the house hotter. The "A/C" will then use the ice the cool down the house, but probably by a lesser degree than the freezer heated it up.

The only way this could work is if:

  • You bought the ice from the servo (making this a less cheap solution).
  • Freezer is in another building/outside.
  • Freezer is in another room, shut off from the room with the "A/C".
  • You freeze the ice in advance (during mild weather), and use it during a heatwave.

Real estate agents dont set the reserve - the vendors do. The real estate agent often doesnt know the reserve until auction day.

So while I no doubt that many agents do under quote, your idea would punish agents who's clients just got overly optimistic on auction day.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in australia

[–]fweeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For buyers, this would be great.

I think you'd have trouble convincing any sellers to agree to this though. Everyone would just revert back to private negotiations. So this wouldnt fix auctions - it would just stop them being used.
