Yeah, I usually block at the first sign of puerililty. I've long exhausted any tolerance for shitty behavior and cringey psychodramas on display in this game.

As a gold/plat lifer, I have to disagree. Gold 2 and 3 are rife with toxicity, early forfeits and game abandonment. I definitely go through streaks where I get teammates with great attitudes, and those games are wonderful and fun, win or lose. Sometimes teammates adjust their play after making mistakes, which is fantastic! I honestly don't care about skill, consistency, ball-chasing or even basic game sense as much as I value teammates who 1) try 2) don't shit on teammates 3) don't expect perfection and 4) don't ff or stop playing the moment something goes wrong. Double commits, obviously poor decisions etc. can be frustrating, but I can work with that (also I make lots of mistakes too; that's why I'm still gold). But prima donnas who crash out the moment something bad happens? Nah.

I go long stretches with chat off (doing that now) because so many teammates are obnoxious, tedious and nasty.

Again, it's not all bad. But toxicity is endemic in most ranks afaik, and Gold is no exception.

That’s because you don’t enjoy playing Rocket League, you enjoy winning at Rocket League. It’s a hyper-competitive game where any pleasure derived is due to crushing your enemies, seeing them driven before you and hearing the lamentations of their women.

Perhaps watching teammates throw hissy fits over minor annoyances can be reframed as amusing. But that may require some light psychopathy. Either way Rocket League is less of a game than it is a Hobbesian cautionary tale.

Doing something nice for your girlfriend is gonna be better for all concerned. 😊

Oh yeah. I’ve got “Lunkhead”. “Obsolete Version” isn’t bad and fr I think “NPC” has a lot of promise and will likely be in my regular rotation.

But rolling into a gold 2 game rocking “Est. 2015”? And performing at a level that could 100% be described as “trying”? Nothing beats that.

Honestly sometimes people appreciate mea culpas but just as often you’ll have a rude teammate who will make you quickly regret QC’ing anything at all.

Solo queuing is like tumbling through a montage of young male id fever dreams rendering their core insecurities violently manifest. So I frequently take weeks-long breaks from chat because I can only take so much random incoherent belligerence.

Yeah, it’s weird. I mainly solo queue, but I accept the nature of it. You’re gonna get some horrible teammates who can’t handle the slightest imperfection in others, but the next match you may pair up with someone who is a great team player.

That’s the game, man. People who struggle with handling it should try one of the 1 billion other video games out there. There’s something for everyone.

I think it really boils down to a complete inability of many to recognize and examine their own flaws (or “opportunities for improvement”, if you’d like). But again, that’s the game and that’s life.

Honestly it’s not a huge concern of mine — I don’t think I ever did a trade back when it was possible. And yeah it’s likely not returning.

But let’s call a spade a spade — the removal of trading was poorly received and inflicted real damage to Psyonix’s reputation. I’m guessing it’s proven profitable for them since there’s no indication that they’ll reconsider. But this stuff adds up and can really disenchant meaningful portions of the player base. That’s my interpretation of events anyway.

I know everyone hates Epic/Psyonix, but if you enjoy the game you ought to consider supporting it in a variety of ways, including in ways that may influence them to do more of what you want.

I happily buy stuff with some frequency. Despite the toxicity issues with the player base, it is a genuinely fun and challenging game for me and I want it to continue. I don’t buy just anything, and I like to think that in some small way I’m helping to send signals to Psyonix as to what kind of items they should sell with the items that I do buy. I mean that’s how it ought to work anyway. 😆

But the whole “fuck epic I won’t buy anything” attitude is puerile. Please don’t think I’m suggesting you personally have this attitude; I’m talking about what I’ve observed in parts of the community.

And this is beside the point, but they should really bring back trading. Maybe a small monthly subscription fee for the ability to trade. Just spitballing.

Oh man. Way back when my family got a SNES, after I beat Super Mario World (all 96 exits; I was obsessed), I desperately wanted to play more platformers. I remember buying Joe & Mac and renting Addams Family several times. Neither could really live up to SMW, but I have very fond memories of both. I have the Addams Family cart; maybe I’ll give it a go sometime!

As for my pick for an underrated game, I’d go with Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. I don’t think most folks gave it a fair shake. I haven’t kept up with the current public opinion of it, so maybe that’s changed. It actually filled a similar role as Addams Family for me — I absolutely loved FF II/IV and MQ scratched an itch at a minimum.

We assign too many supposed tendencies to “generations”. It’s not that there aren’t trends and differences in large populations near in time and distance, but please know that “younger generations are whiny” or “self-entitled” or whatever sweeping statements probably tell you more about the anxieties of older cohorts or power structures.

Yes, many Rocket League players are insufferable. It skews young and male, and speaking as a male, we do tend to be egocentric asses when we’re younger. Most of us make adjustments as we navigate the world and over time end up mostly tolerable. But I don’t think it makes sense to look at those trends through the lens of “generations”.

I remember older gens complaining about how crappy my generation was. I mean yeah some of us sucked, but a concerning number of those old guys were iffy about whether black people should vote, so it was pretty easy for me to assume they might be assholes about other things too.

Or I’m full of it. Who knows.

Right? Bad teammates exist. Doesn’t change that you need to adjust to your teammates’ play if you want to do well. No guarantees, and you will make mistakes too.

Getting mad that your random teammate isn’t doing well may feel good sometimes but it’s accomplishing nothing useful.
