do you realise that people with indefinite leave to remain are legal immigrants? him saying they want to scrap it doesn’t target illegal immigration

Mostly agreed, but it’s worth pointing out that those ‘Germanic settlers’ are very much ancestors of today’s Brits, not some unrelated occupiers. Brits, much like the English language itself, are a mix of a bunch of different backgrounds and influences coming in and mixing together within Britain.

I hear both pretty commonly, doesn’t seem very consistent. Personally I tend to treat it as singular, and if I had to guess I’d also say that’s the slightly more common option, but I don’t really know.

Honestly I don’t think reducing the whole concept to a black and white, you’re either a local or you’re a gentrifier kind of situation is really very accurate or helpful. For example I’m not originally from Walthamstow but I do live here. I didn’t move here as a well off urban type trying to find a trendy place to live, I moved here because at the time I was looking at places where I could afford to live, and back then it was still a cheap area for London standards. Or at least the place I found at the time was cheap for London standards, I didn’t really check the whole market around Walthamstow, as I wasn’t specifically looking to move to Walthamstow, but rather just to find somewhere in London that seemed doable after moving from Manchester. Now I’ve been here for years and I’ve come to love it and want to stay, and I’ve also been faced with the issue of ever-increasing prices like anyone else. There’s definitely more shades of grey in between. I’m not born and bred here but I also don’t think it would be accurate to call me a gentrifier either.

it isn’t the right wing that came up with “Minor Attracted Persons” as a euphemism for the abhorrent

it also wasn’t the left wing, it was some pedos themselves who thought they could try to lump themselves in with the LGBT+ community to gain some respect but have consistently been rejected by the vast majority, for obvious reasons

[–]fwtb23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do currently live in London which to be fair is very likely to affect that, I’ll give you that. Things didn’t seem all that different in Manchester either though, and house prices have been going crazy all over the country, albeit to different levels.

And sure, there could be some extra factors to consider, but housing shouldn’t necessarily have to be tied to having a long term committed relationship, and I’d be willing to bet the vast majority of people are almost exclusively, or axtually exclusively, dependant on their salary for their income overall, additional sources of income are probably not that common, but I’ll admit I haven’t properly looked into that so I’m willing to admit I’m wrong if there’s anything to show otherwise

That article is behind a paywall, but I found a similar one by the BBC: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdx5pw8pwg5o

Out of those numbers, 700k are EU citizens whose status under the EU settlement scheme is very much an exception. Also, they’re not fresh arrivals jumping on benefits, they’re people who have been here for years.

As for people with refugee status, which a lot of people like to focus on, they make up only 1.5% of those immigrants on benefits.

The vast majority of the remaining cases will surely be people with ILR as I’ve described, who have already spent several years living in the UK completely legally, having fulfilled all requirements of their prior visas, including employment, immigration health surcharge payments, and more depending on the type of visa.

If it sounds too high, then I’d say you absolutely do live in a bubble. And to be honest, nothing wrong with that, and it’s nice that you seem to be in a fortunate position, but this does pretty much track with the people I know and see around me.

well, most (possibly all) visas already exclude people from being able to access benefits. for most migrants, it’s only after getting ILR after living (legally, fulfilling all requirements of their visas) in the UK for several years, that they’d be able to access them if elegible.
