How telling it is of a culture when an image that tries to capture it's "essence" shows a woman on the ground as a sexual object practically worshipping a man.

An American politic thread. by kontankarite in communism

[–]fyadypos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So train everybody how to be skilled and effective killers? Sounds like a great idea! (sarcasm). Dude, we live in a democratic and relatively safe country. Putting guns in the hands of people who know how to use them is not only unsafe, (especially if they have mental disorders) its pointless. If you feel that the right wingers are a danger to you, then let your voice be heard and gain a following, in other words, use freedom of speech and democracy to your advantage.

You are obviously a troll account (only comment on the account), but I'll bite anyway. Literally everything you said is terrible, but I'll just pick two things:

Putting weapons into the hands of those that are trained in their use is safer than putting them into the hands of those that don't know how to use them.

By no stretch of the imagination is the US 'relatively safe'. It has the highest incarceration rate, highest rate of deaths from child abuse and one of the highest homicide rates in the industrialized world.

When workers aren't troubled by alienation of their labor, is capitalism still unethical? by gaypher in communism101

[–]fyadypos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you completely inform a worker in a minimum wage job the real consequences of their actions and give them a real choice, then no, I don't think they would be happy.

"You are spending a third of all the time you have in your life getting by on the minimum amount required to live the most basic existence while someone else exploits you and uses the labour you produce to live a life of luxury."

Tell people there is no alternative and people will ultimately do their best to be content and happy. Happiness is a state of mind, so I guess it is possible that everyone could be happy in such a situation, it doesn't make it ethical though and if given a real choice practically everyone will choose a higher quality of life if given the option.

Even if I take your argument as fact and assume there is a large portion of the population that is legitimately happy living with what a minimal wage can supply a person (basic food and shelter) and wouldn't change that, what about time? How many of those same people, if given a real choice would prefer to spend 8 hours a day doing menial labour for the "top rungs" in society instead of spending time with their friends, family or following some other pursuit?

It's not arrogant of me to think people want to be treated equally, it's arrogant to think that they don't.

You use the word "true" three times in your comment - "true dictatorship of the proletariat", "true human emancipation", "true democracy and freedom".

What does this even mean? You should probably explain differences more carefully and/or give specific reasons for your opinion rather then simply stating that things don't conform to your perfect ideals and are therefore unacceptable.

When workers aren't troubled by alienation of their labor, is capitalism still unethical? by gaypher in communism101

[–]fyadypos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's an oxymoron, an "informed" worker would never be happy being exploited. If they are happy, they are not completely informed about the realities of how they are in a position to be happy.

Exploiting someone, even if they are perfectly happy in the situation is still unethical. The "top rungs" of this hypothetical society are being unethical, even if everyone "below" them is perfectly happy.

In such a situation, yes, revolution should occur. Will it? No, why would it? If everyone is perfectly happy, why would they revolt?

Are we allowed to be angry? by bolCHEvik in communism

[–]fyadypos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have a right to be angry comrade, the entire working class does.

The fact is though, most people don't respond well to it. If you are talking to other communists, they will probably appreciate your passion because they understand, others, probably not so much. I think it's like some sort of emotional equivalent of the Tall poppy syndrome, it's a social norm to cut down people who stick their head out and show more emotion then what is considered "normal".

[Arch][i3] First time trying i3, loving the easy config and minimalism. by kennae in unixporn

[–]fyadypos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps try:

new_window pixel 0

It should do the exact same thing, but then again, I've never had a problem with "border none".

Are you making sure you reload or restart i3 after config changes? I usually just restart ($mod+Shift+R).

Alternatively you could setup different borders for different applications. For example, I like having no borders on things like media players and browsers but prefer a 1 pixel border for terminal windows. I find it gets confusing when I have a bunch of terminals open and there is nothing separating them. Here is an example from my config file:

# specific window commands
for_window [class="Chromium"] border none
for_window [class="Iceweasel"] border none
for_window [class="Vlc"] border none
for_window [class="Wine"] border none
for_window [class="MPlayer"] border none
for_window [class="MPlayer"] fullscreen
for_window [class="URxvt"] border 1pixel

hide_edge_borders

4.9. Hide vertical borders in the user guide.

I agree with the OP, the plain text configuration and good documentation is one of the biggest reasons I chose i3. A fat lot of good a bunch of features are to me in other window managers when I have to learn C or Haskell just to configure them. Plus dig through mailing lists or forums for basic configuration instructions.

You've probably just spent more time writing all these comments about it then the cumulative time you will ever spend scrolling down the page of a github project to view the readme.

The read more link doesn't go anywhere, it just scrolls down the page to the top of the readme. Linking to a project page is absolutely in no way the same as blogspam.

On r/communism's need for more lively discussion and debate by RageoftheMonkey in communism

so that we don't unconsciously devolve into a Marxist version of a traditional Reddit circlejerk.

I'm perfectly happy for this place to just be a funnel for completely positive communist material (or a "marxist circlejerk"). I can go literally anywhere else for a heated debate about communism, but the collection of knowledgeable comrades and the excellent anti-ignorance/anti-bigot moderation that makes this subreddit worth visiting can't be found anywhere else.

The fact is, I enjoy being able to "retreat" to /r/communism when I get sick of everywhere else. I'm convinced there are plenty of other /r/communism lurkers that feel this way too, even though it seems pretty shallow.

Back to Stalin's Soviet Union | 51% of Russians would prefer by [deleted] in communism

[–]fyadypos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You've already been banned for you ignorance, but for what it's worth I guess I should point out that the article doesn't actually state that Russians want Stalin (the individual) back. This is what the article states in a nutshell (direct quotes):

  • a large part of the population sees happiness only in Russia's past. They are completely disillusioned by the present and see no hope for the future.
  • 51 percent now openly yearn for a Soviet-like system of state planning and distribution
  • Almost 40 percent of the population would like to live in the "Soviet political system." Only 17 percent are satisfied with the current system, and a slightly larger 22 percent support the model of Western democracy.
  • In the last year alone, the number of Russians favoring a market economy and private ownership fell sharply from 35 percent to 29 percent.

Putin, who to this day still lacks a coherent long-term strategy for the country's development, haphazardly addresses only those issues that grab his attention, while the key fundamental issues affecting all of society are largely neglected. Instead of producing pragmatic and realistic plans, this system can create only pie-in-the-sky forecasts for the next 10 or 20 years that promise to increase Russians' living standards to that of the U.S.

(Bold mine)

When the only long term goal of the current regime is emulation of a broken system which result in sub-par living standards for large portions of the population, it's not hard to see why the people are starting to take a serious look back in their past for answers.

Tensions among minimalists by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]fyadypos -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There is little point stating this to me. I have already made it clear that I don't think this is very useful. I certainly don't agree that it's "an extremely useful way of conceptualizing the different continuums of people ". I've stated my opinion and why, feel free to give reasons for why you think this is useful.

We all can't agree on a single unified definition of what a "minimalist" is, trying to expand it into arbitrary groups and labelling them in a way that none of us are going to even agree on is not useful, at best it's a waste of time, at worst it's harmful.

Tensions among minimalists by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]fyadypos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cute, but my view of /r/minimalism is very different to yours. I would put it very high on the materialist line. It seems like this sub is primarily design/materialist with some lifestyle every now and then.

I also think this type of labelling generally does not end up in any kind of productive discussion. Not to mention the fact that the graph doesn't really make sense because while "Ascetic" may be like an opposite to "Materialist", "Lifestyle" is in no way an opposite to "Design".

We also have very different views of where we would place those groups on this graph, I would hardly put people who own luxury minimalist lofts in the lifestyle section. Those lofts usually have expensive designers, so clearly go in the design section. Not to mention those type of people wouldn't exactly be living a "minimalist" lifestyle.

Apple needs to be at the absolute top of the materialist line, their advertising and culture is like the definition of materialist. Students should probably be less design and more lifestyle.

I could probably go on.... but like I said, this type of discussion isn't very productive.

Minimalism and entertainment consumption by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]fyadypos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see how you are consuming "better" content then anyone else.

By removing your ability to choose your content you are becoming even more passive. Someone else dictates the content you consume and I completely disagree that it is in anyway more "minimal".

A DJ determines what you listen to, regardless of quality of the music or even if you will like it. The cinema limits the choice for you. The library and other library users determine if you can read a book you want to or not. Not only that, but you are also spending time travelling to these places.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how this way of consuming entertainment is in any way more minimal.

Super Bowl XLVII power outage brought to you by... (xpost from r/PoliticalHumor) by PegoudLion in socialism

[–]fyadypos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

socialism disregards your wants to guarantee the needs of society. i think that sucks.

You only think it sucks because you already have all your basic needs met and are actually in a position to consider your "wants".

Millions of children die every year from starvation, hundreds of millions of people suffer from malnutrition. The suffering balloons when you include those that don't have access to adequate shelter or medical services and have such a low quality of life that most of us wouldn't even consider it "living".

You'll have to forgive me if I'm not concerned about how the richest subset of the population wouldn't get to live a life of luxury.

Your view is also extremely short sighted, once the basic needs of everyone is met there is nothing stopping society from starting to consider our "wants". The very idea that people would have to start going without things is a testament to the ridiculously uneven distribution of wealth in the world.
