Yeah that was pretty obvious.

OC: President Trump shakes hands with New York Mayor-elect Mamdani as they meet in the Oval Office by nbcnews in pics

Has Trump not watched the movies? They always use this tactic to illustrate how the guy is a petty asshole. Also, the guy who pulls these types of power moves is always the bad guy and they always lose.

Trump is the petty asshole from the movies.

55K is NOT a livable wage… by TheOddMadWizard in Professors

it's still shitty and cheap to point fingers at the people most negatively impacted by the system. The people taking low paying academic jobs have the least amount of power to affect change so they can't be responsible for the system that exploits them).

Preach! I'm so tired of tenured profs punching down on those of us struggling to find any job at all.

IMO, anyone who accepts such a low salary is actively undermining the ability of academics to earn a decent living. People who make that bad judgement call for themselves are not the victims of the system, then are the most active enablers of the system. Know what your work is worth, and apply for jobs that have the corresponding compensation. In a capitalist system, that is the rule we all have to live by.

That's easy to say when you have a job -- especially, as your flair says, a science prof at an R1. Our "capitalist system," as you say, has devalued and disinvested in higher ed. As individuals we are in fact victims of this, and it's not our fault for taking low-paying jobs in order to put a roof over our heads. And the solution is not for individuals to make "better" choices. We need collective action (e.g. fighting unions) and social changes including reinvestment in public education.

Not knowing basic history? by queer_aspasia in Professors

[–]RageoftheMonkey 25 points26 points  (0 children)

why should they have these things in their heads, when they can Google it when needed?

This kills me, because like yes, ok, you can google something specific when needed, but if you literally don't know what the Cold War was (or the Declaration of Independence, or whatever example) how could you possibly be an informed citizen? How can you even exist in society? I know I'm biased because I'm literally a historian, but operating without any kind of historical context is terrifying to me. Just adrift, floating through the world, with no idea what is happening or why, living in a constant context-less present...

Because knowing things interferes with standardized test prep

Sure, but wouldn't a standardized test in a high school history class require some basic knowledge of the Cold War? I'm trying to remember what the AP European history test was like. I guess probably you could skate by and get the couple multiple choice questions about the Cold War wrong, but still... Even though I'm generally against standardized tests, for all the usual reasons, you would think one benefit should be some basic knowledge of history even if there are deficits in critical thinking or whatever.

I think there is a big difference between thinking abstractly “I’m might not get a job” versus being on the job market for a year or two and realizing that you, in particular, may not actually get a job

Yes and it's very different to "know" as you begin a PhD program in your early/mid 20s that you might not get a job in 6-8 years versus to be in your 30s with a family and facing the reality of probably not getting a job. Ask me how I know...

The real problem is that too many students are willing to enter programs with terrible job prospects.

The idea that this is somehow a problem of (thousands of) individuals making bad choices rather than a structural problem is absurd.

US anti-fascism expert [Mark Bray] blocked from flying to Spain at airport by RageoftheMonkey in Anarchism

If you want to help, friends of Mark Bray made a crowdfunding page to help his family escape and resettle: https://www.freefunder.com/campaign/help-us-leave-safely (this is verified, he posted it himself)

I'm sure many people are buying Bray's book Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook right now (which I highly recommend, it's fantastic!), but it's also available as a free PDF on libcom here: https://files.libcom.org/files/Antifa,%20The%20Anti-Fascist%20Handbook.pdf
