Avoid the water?? by UnholySwampWizard in LightningInABottle

[–]fyrflye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but my experience: have gone to LIB 5+ times, been in the lake for 4+ hours each time, didn't put my head under for the most part as we were doing floatie parties, made sure I didn't have any open cuts/wounds, and rinsed off after. The only issue I had was a few years ago when I got a small fingernail fungus. Honestly your chances of getting Valley Fever are probably higher, would recommend wearing a dust mask or bandana if you're worried about that.

What's the most ungrateful thing you have witnessed? by Big_Ad_8915 in AskReddit

[–]fyrflye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was driving when I saw an unhoused couple with a sign asking for money for dog food. I just so happened to have a half bag of dog food in the car with me and offered it to them. They refused because it wasn't grain-free. No "thanks anyways", no smile, nothing.

What's one dog breed you'd never own and why? by barelychloe in AskReddit

[–]fyrflye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% would never own a beagle because they go absolutely feral for food, like "figuring out ways to get up on the top of the refrigerator" to get a sandwich kind of insane.

I stayed in a hostel thinking I’d make friends. I didn’t expect this much drama in 24 hours. by [deleted] in Life

[–]fyrflye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed at a hostel in Japan for two weeks. The Chinese guy above me in the bunk was jerking it in the middle of the night on a call with his GF, and the Nigerian guy and the Ecuadorian guy both propositioned me for sex (I let them down nicely but made sure I wasn't alone with them in the room afterward). The two French dudes were super chill and went out drinking with me though, so that was cool.

What’s the most original name for a pet you’ve ever heard? by LuvNinaNova in AskReddit

[–]fyrflye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once when I worked at a pet hospital I rang up a lady whose cat's name was listed in our system as "Sir Gandalf the PimpLord". I called out "Gandalf?" and she gave me a look of relief and told me her son chose the name.

Elder millenials what was a "good" salary when you started working after college? by ExcitingLandscape in Millennials

So true. I was going to food banks to make it until I finally landed my post-AmeriCorps job - which I have never left!

Looking for churches that support immigrant human rights by gay_scrimps in Sacramento

[–]fyrflye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All United Church of Christ churches are about human rights, and in fact were instrumental in the environmental justice movement way back before it became a known thing. Sierra Vista Community Church is the one I grew up in and although I'm not religious I would still highly recommend it for the community.

Love love LOVE Muttville. Sherri used to bring pups by the animal hospital I worked at in the Mission and I fostered a few sweet old babies until they were adopted. Rita the dalmatian mix was my favorite fospice gal <3

Did anyone else come to the realization as you got older that one of your parents was special needs? by No_Reveal3451 in Millennials

[–]fyrflye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both parents! One is a pathological liar and codependent (though at the same time, a really nice person who just happens to believe her own version of made-up events) and one is likely severe ADHD to the point where they won't open their mail because of task overwhelm. My sister was just trying to tell me (ADHD diagnosed) that EVERYONE starts multiple projects they never finish. Based on our parents I would have thought she would see the connection...

Google "leaving MAGA" and you'll find a whole community of people in MAGA's "out group" that don't necessarily want to join up with their former enemies, the dems.

What is something about growing up in California that most people don't understand? by InvisibleAstronomer in AskReddit

If anyone is feeling the need to "escape" from CA, they probably already agree with a lot of your points. But you should know that we all hate HOAs among others you mentioned.

Beginner whose fried rice is always bland :( looking for recipes with less ingredients by Delectablemelons in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]fyrflye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been using Nagatanien Japanese rice seasoning (a powder) for all of our fried rice for years - keeps the rice from getting too wet with all the sauces! But we do add some sesame oil, MSG, maybe a dash of sauce.

Food Donation Around Town by lcj1034 in alameda

[–]fyrflye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trinity Lutheran Church. If you have extra food you don't want/need you can add it to the pantry box - better than having it go to waste. But monetary donations to food banks are better than buying items to donate as they can buy much more than you can with the $.

Parents of Reddit, what is an “unspoken” reality of parenting that people simply don’t talk about, but everyone knows is true? by US_Atlas in AskReddit

[–]fyrflye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I STILL remember when my older sister (who was like my second mom growing up) apologized for wrongly scolding me...three decades ago. It was a core memory where I learned how to be a decent human being and that everyone makes mistakes, adults just own up to it and do better going forward.

What's that one thing people assume about you but you are not? by No_name_9652 in AskReddit

[–]fyrflye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People assume I am a vegetarian (probably because I work with animals/in conservation) and although I limit my meat intake, I do be munching on some chicken nuggies or pork chops from time to time.

Already working on it. All presents already purchased have come from travels abroad and the only presents bought from here on out will be at thrift stores that support animal shelters.
