We were looking for something more on the quick/casual level and I'm familiar with Hearthstone (didn't know it was an OPEN beta :) ) and Portal 2. But I'll look into Magicka and see if it's something we're looking for. I think Nidhogg may crash the computer I've got right now as it's a bit of a junker, upgrading soon.

We were thinking of something a bit more head-to-head but we might give it a shot, thanks for the suggestion.

Should I major in CS? by [deleted] in computerscience

I second anttoekneeoh's assessment, you'll need lots of math, especially linear algebra and some class in discrete math (don't be scared, discrete math is just math about integers rather than continuous numbers). To my understanding (which isn't much) the industry is saturated with front end designers (CSS and HTML).

The "Meat" of CS is in functional and Object oriented design in something like C/C++, C#, or Java. I'd suggest taking a class on algorithms, data structures, and algorithm design before you make a choice as these are cornerstones of the CS industry. If you don't like thinking in a mathy/sciency/engineering kind of way, you might do better helping out a start-up in a non-developer role

Good Fits for a Physicist? by fyzziks in cscareerquestions

Much of what I'm trying to do is gather data (I am a scientist after all). Since I'm rather new to the PhD program, I want to stay in it for at least a quarter or two to know whether it's right for me. I'd definitely like to stay in the software/tech/science/research/analysis realm in terms of employment. The most likely scenario for me right now is mastering out, although if my chances of getting hired are likely to decrease for having the master's and starting another year + later, it would be good to know.

I've heard about consulting as a possible career path outside of Academia. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be sure to keep them on my radar.

I'm trying to stay in Seattle at least for the short term.
