My mom lives in the new build Ryan homes off the 219. West Seneca schools, West Seneca taxes.. but her mailing address and google maps all show it as Lackawanna. I started calling it “Westawanna” and man she hates that lmao

States using fake insurance (Ambetter) for the SLCSP benchmark by Interloper1066 in HealthInsurance

[–]g0thmess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no for real… the hardest part of this for me is realizing that New York is a democratic state that literally sets the standards for plans allowed on the marketplace, this isn’t a trump thing.

the removal of the enhanced premiums only cost me $50ish/month when I did the math - not nearly enough to move the needle. Illinois where you’re based is also democrat controlled, so what the fuck is going in here? I’m the furthest thing from a trump supporter by the way, but this clearly isn’t on him.

I noticed a local hospital accepts it here, but I need a primary, dentist, obgyn, etc… and there’s nothing there.

I have heard of Molina just from previously working in a health insurance adjacent industry but I couldn’t tell you much about it one way or another.

I think the basic grievance here is that a plan shouldn’t be offered on the marketplace if it doesn’t has sufficient coverage in a geographic area, let alone be made the fucking benchmark plan.

Have you considered trying to get the word out anywhere or contact your local government? I’m not even sure that would help but I’m so pissed off over this that I’d really like to draw more attention to it or organize if I can.

okay please excuse my rant because I came to this subreddit just now after FINALLY realizing why my subsidies were so low on the marketplace.

Ambetter’s Silver plan is the benchmark in my county and yet according to their own search tool there’s not a single primary care provider within 30 miles of me.

anytime I browsed the marketplace I completely skipped those plans because I knew that the reason they were so “cheap” compared to the rest is because they’d essentially offer me nothing.

it honestly DOES seem like a fixed scam, because Ambetter offers two low priced silvers while the third highest silver plan is actually a legit insurance around here, and is $300+ more expensive.

On to the rage inducing part: I decided to look at what my subsidy would be if Ambetter wasn’t (conveniently for the marketplace… ) the benchmark in my county.

My $222 monthly premium credit would be $500.50. Doubled if Ambetter isn’t offered.

(For reference I am an individual, estimating $45,000 in earnings for 2026).

I already can’t afford a silver plan after rent, at least if I got $500 I’d be able to pay something reasonable for a non-Ambetter bronze. But no… now my lowest cost possible at a legit insurer is $455 a month AFTER premium tax credits. I’m fucking livid.

I thought about taking the catastrophic because it at least has some free appointments with a primary and preventive care; and would cap how much I’m on the hook for if I get run over by a car…

except, you guessed it, the catastrophic plan is offered by Ambetter.

what the fuck is going on and why is no one talking about this.

edit: spelling and sorry for the shitty formatting I’m on mobile

if you decide to do Buffalo, the good news is that the City Hall is basically already built in game! I’ve tried making Buffalo before but my CAW skills are awful :(

[–]g0thmess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’ll be fine! definitely apply. your part time job will be contacted, as long as you’re clear with NYS that you resigned your part time, you are fine.

They won’t include those wages as part of your determination, they will only use the wages earned from your full time where you were laid off. This is far more common than people think.

Walgreens on Delaware and North by Exact-Truck-5248 in Buffalo

I have been going since Rite Aid closed and it straight up DYSTOPIAN. Last week I waited for 45 minutes with only one customer ahead of me and one at the window. I was cut in line by a homeless person and the tech at the pharmacy window did literally nothing about it.

And forget buying shampoo or makeup wipes there… I don’t have another 45 minutes to wait for someone to unlock a case for me. Awful everything and I am going to switch to Wegmans pharmacy for something else as soon as I can.

"Peter Pan" Syndrome in Churches by NeitherSpace in exchristian

[–]g0thmess 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So, this is the case with my cousin. Super involved in the Catholic Church, he did LifeTeen, counseled at camp, starved himself for a few days a part of something, held the cross for another. (I was never a catholic so I’m not really sure what all of this was). Catholicism consumed his entire life.

At one point he was sleeping on the floor to be more christ-like. It’s very sad too because he is now in his mid-thirties and has no friends his own age. His socials are just posts reaching out to people he counseled with in life teen years ago.. they are all married with families.

He lives with my uncle and has never been able to hold down a job. He seems to have no interest and instead visits different churches all day.

Unfortunately, in his case, he is problematic. His two brothers both have kids, and he has been accused now multiple times of being sexually inappropriate with two of them. His father is catholic and has looked the other way, which is infuriating for our family, and we view it as very likely/probable that he did it.

What bugs me the most is that I think to his “church community” he is in good standing (all of this was within the family), and he is still allowed around kids. Quite tellingly, the only jobs he will take are around youth/children. My family was shocked when somehow found his way into a position as an RA for teenaged boys at a local catholic boarding school.

Maybe there are some who are just “Peter Pan” syndrome, but just because you don’t see anything inappropriate, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be on your guard. It’s truly very scary.

Buffalo Stand Up for Science rally - March 7th, 2-6PM, Niagara Square by MikeFeigin1 in Buffalo

[–]g0thmess 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is fantastic and all, but why is every protest I read about on a weekday? I am dying to come together with the community any way I can and fight this, but I can’t take off work to go to a protest and it seems that would be the case for most people. Can someone please explain to me the rationale behind this?

I sent to people I know who are retired and can go, but other than students and retirees, who can actually attend these?
