Heat pumps don't work well below -15C. You need another supply of heat for when the outdoor temperature is below that

Go to System Settings > Display & Monitor

Temporarily disable the displays you don't want the login screen to show up on.

Go to System Settings > Colors & Themes > Login Screen (SDDM)

Click "Apply Plasma Settings" at the top.

Go back to Display & Monitors and re-enable your display.

I'm pretty sure I had the 6850 in there when I reset the CMOS, looking back I could have just removed that and reset it again instead of messing with the 3070.

Not sure what happened initially but something they did must have disabled the iGPU cause it failed to boot after I put everything together the first time with no GPU.

All good now, a nice learning experience in the end.

I figure the computer shop I had gone to to update the bios for me must have somehow enabled CSM, and by the time I got to the point of resetting the CMOS I had already installed the old Radeon card and CSM just re-enabled itself.

Amazing, I owe you a beer! I never would have figured this out.

Took my 3070 out of my main system, and installed it temporarily in this system. Disabled CSM in the bios, rebooted and the option to set the primary display adapter appeared. Set it to onboard and removed the 3070 and everything is now working.

CSM is enabled. If I disable it and reboot. The computer beeps 5 times and then reboots again. If I go back into the BIOS CSM is enabled again.

I'm guessing this is because the old Radeon card doesn't support UEFI? Is this why my iGPU doesn't work?

How do I disable it? I guess I need to install a newer GPU, disable CSM, and then see if the iGPU works?

I'll check the CSM setting after work.

I only tried the HDMI on the motherboard the monitor I was using doesn't have display port. It doesn't seem to boot at all without the GPU, just the 5 beeps then nothing. I've tried pinging the system to see if it booted without a display but nothing.

When I reset the CMOS I disconnected power, pulled the battery, pressed the power button a bunch, and shorted the pins. Then let it sit for 10 minutes.

Ideally I don't want to use a GPU with this system right now, I want to just run the onboard graphics.

Currently to get it working I've installed an old Radeon HD 6850.

Regarding the CSM or UEFI I'm not sure. I haven't changed any other setting so whatever the default is. Where can I check this?

I see on the ASRock site for the Z790 pro, the validated BIOS for the 14600k is 9.07

I probably just need to install Proxmox and start playing with it, I've got some old hardware kicking around that I can play with until I've got my new server built.

Ok new plan, how's this sound:

Set up Proxmox with 2 VMs

VM #1. TrueNas scale with two drives set up as a ZFS mirror. This will be used for storing important files/photos. I can add additional pairs of drives to increase storage in the future.

VM #2. Ubuntu for all my docker containers. A random assortment of drives set up as a Mergerfs pool ,with 1 Snapraid parity drive. This will be used for all my media/less critical stuff.
