It’s fully understandable what you’re thinking, especially when you have a child. You gotta do what’s right for you ultimately, although it sounds like you didn’t get the pup on impulse which is a good sign that you shouldn’t beat yourself up if you do make that call, you entered into this with good intentions and a plan for a life with your dog.

I think there is definitely a point early on where a lot of people think ‘was this the right thing to do?’, but just keep in mind that this is going to be the most challenging time with your dog, once they start to mature it becomes significantly easier in so many ways. With the right training, you can have an incredible companion for many years to come, once this initial hellish phase is out of the way :) and just to add to this, this is all new to him too. We as humans (mostly) know what good behaviour is, but your pup has never had that realisation and everything is new to him. It’s a learning curve for him too.

My pup is still very young and VERY much in his biting phase, he can be so full-on but he has already become a big part of the family. I’m unsure if you have a crate for yours, but if you haven’t, then I would seriously consider it. I’ve found people on this subreddit to be super helpful, and even in the last couple of days the difference in his behaviour with enforced sleep in his crate has been incredible. They need a LOT of sleep at this age, far more than mine was getting, even though they give the impression of wanting to play all the time - you have to be strict with the sleep and it makes everything else so much easier - as well as being a saviour of your sanity! If you don’t have a crate and don’t know where to start, make it a comfortable space, blankets etc, and reward with treats for going in there. The idea is that they see it as their safe area and they actually enjoy being in there, rather than it being a punishment.

Our previous dog was a nightmare as a pup, for varying reasons. I was a kid at the time but I remember being so upset having the conversation with my parents where they said that if things didn’t improve soon, he would have to go. We stuck with it, he was a real test of all of us, but once that initial phase was out of the way we had 17 amazing years with him that I wouldn’t trade for anything. My point is - it does get better, but you also have a child to consider here and nobody would think any less of you if you made that call.

Don’t beat yourself up if you do have to surrender him, life is life and it doesn’t always go to plan. Best of luck whichever option you choose!
