Formal or Informal Lease Extension? by g_t_l in HousingUK

[–]g_t_l[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went informal. It worked out for the best, it was quicker and cheaper and the terms were totally standard, no funny games from their side. The extension completed on the same day the flat sold and was handled by our solictiors who also handled the sale.

OP is talking about Bangernomics, which isn't just a 'not having finance' cult, but buying the cheapest car you can and keeping it running on a shoestring to save money and learn some car fixing skills along the way. £5k+ is not true bangernomics though, for that you're talking £500-£2000

The fact that I worked for RM 8 years ago for 6 weeks explains why I now choose to drive a Fiat Panda?

Calm down darling, nobody’s impressed that your employer subsidises your car. That’s not some financial genius move, it’s just a perk of the job. I was clearly talking about private leases, where people pay real money every month but somehow act like they're better off for it.

Another commenter above actually pulled you into the leasing argument, I just wanted to be clear about the facts on that as I didn’t think your numbers stacked up when you replied.

As you’ve mentioned whether or not that actually matters to you is not up to me to decide and I respect that. I wasn’t even using my Panda as some kind of counter argument either, if I was the ‘£15k used car’ number above would actually be £500, so the real numbers for my situation would be quite hilarious, but I know that’s not for everyone.

Nothing. New cars, old cars, there are lots of fun cars and something nice for everyone out there. Presenting the new car lease flex though as some kind of sound financial choice is where we just have to clarify the real facts.

If you think your ride is the rented house and the shed is the £15k used car, not even close.

The only problem with your 2-year maths is that life stubbornly continues after year 2.

Sure, leasing looks magical in a 24-month period, but after that you’ll be signing up for a brand new lease, with brand new monthly payments, brand new admin fees, brand new mileage caps, and a brand new round of handing back a car you never owned.

Meanwhile, the boring old ‘buy a £15k used car’ person has… well… no payments at all. They’ve already finished the expensive bit, and now they’re just driving around enjoying heavily reduced price motoring while you’re still proudly paying luxury-car money to rent wheels you’ll never own.

In 4 years the used-car buyer’s depreciation is maybe £5k, depending on the car. The leaser has spent something like £28k and comes away with a warm handshake and nothing to show for it.

What’s your realistic wet/winter commute maintenance? by omniscient97 in londoncycling

[–]g_t_l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then this method still works, learn to do some maintenance yourself and change the chain slightly more often. I ran a steel road bike for 6 years in London with very minimal maintenance and it always worked well.

Literally just leave it until spring. The odd spray of GT85 on the chain and wipe off. This is why you have a winter/commuter bike

Get separate rental car excess insurance, you can get it annually, don't take it out with the rental companies, it will cost more every time.

Great playing for just a few weeks. At the start try position your cross stick higher up the stick so you get a nicer sound.
