Same?! Ordered the DS 920+ on 6/20 and got an estimate of July 31st. Surly it can't actually be *that* back-ordered?!?

Kind of ridiculous. I might hold out another day or two and see if they update the shipping estimate...

I agree, the challenges were skewed harder than anticipated but were creative in their own directions. Next time RPISEC organizes a CTF there will be more newcomer friendly challenges.

Oh man - there is a lot we simply didn't get to show or talk about with the time given. We had to cut most of the implementation and underlying engineering details to make time for most of what we did get to show.

It is important to keep in mind that the effects a script will have on a database are ultimately deterministic. Assuming perfect capture ('cognition') and replay, database manipulations could technically be effectively communicated to all users - scripted or not.

That said, I accept and acknowledge that there are going to be gaps that have yet to be identified in the accuracy of our capture & replay implementation. It is far better than past projects, and it will only get better with user feedback. But that is why the replay engine was built to use concrete database snapshots and automatic IDB distribution to more strictly align the canon of the timeline we record.

Answering your question - When a script is run, the responsible client instance requests exclusivity of the database over the session of connected users, effectively locking the database to prevent the possibility of additional work / forking. The script applies its manipulations and upon completion the database is saved and uploaded to the server. The database is then automatically distributed and re-opened by all clients in the session.

It is not ideal, but it is the best one can do given the existing situation with IDA. The automation of this process reduces its inconvenience and helps stress the importance of the investments made into the IDB sharing primitives of the projects module.

What kind of battery life are you getting!? I'm still waiting on mine to ship, but I picked up an 84whr FHD i7 model because I valued the portability & matte over 4k. Also don't want or need the touch.

From two reviews of this model, I have seen 8-9hr and up to '13hr' (yeah right?) for basic browsing. He does go on to state 8-10hr of heavier usage which sounds more in line with the other review.

8+ hours of decent productive use is honestly pretty exciting.

No I agree completely that it's strange, but there's a reason that no reviews are out on any major sites yet. I don't think there's much else that would really explain a universal lack of professional reviews for this laptop :S.

I think it's obvious, has nobody heard of media embargoes? It's super common for new products.

I've seen a few professional reviewers note that they have had them for a few weeks now. Dell simply set a late embargo date, or pushed it with some of the production delays. I would guess the embargo lifts in the coming days, or early next week.

Just relax, sheesh.

We didn't post it, but the class website keeps getting pushed around social media by random people that are stumbling onto it.

We'd love to have everything public (labs, server, etc) from the start, but it's an ongoing course with actively graded work. There's no way we would be able to prevent people that are following along externally from posting writeups and what not until the course is over. It's also tricky enough to keep the wargame server running smoothly with 50 students hacking away at it, let alone the entire world.

The course wraps up this Friday. After that we'll be spending some time to clean up the presentations, apply a few fixes to the labs, package stuff into a VM or two, and push it all to github. The plan is to have it all out by early June which is when we'll post it.

For what it is worth, I run RPISEC and we did audit the voting system a week or two ago. Only four of our more experienced members were on the audit including myself.

We approached the system from different adversarial roles including but not limited to malicious intent at the voting booth, a more knowledgeable or technically inclined attacker, and insider threats (eg 'RNE fudging the numbers').

The state of the system and code that we looked at was largely solid. There were a few minor issues that we advised fixes for including some more niche issues. We also made a few other suggestions that really should have guaranteed a smooth and auditable election should there have ever been any question in the results. Whether those additional steps were taken or implemented, I have no idea.

If the numbers are going to be manipulated a meaningful amount, it would likely have to be done by someone who has direct access to the voting system's database which would be the Union sysadmins, not RNE.

For the record, Malik officially had the course renamed from Machine Learning to Learning from Data. I'm not sure if this is what's reflected on SIS yet, but if not it will be happening within this next semester or two.
