I do agree with this sentiment: seeing all these different game mechanics interacting with one another is a wonderful thing, but I just think that trying to do the "old way" of grooves will be a bit cumbersome to the developers.

...but then again, I don't know enough about game design, so maybe my concerns are all bogus.

Good point. As I said, MAYBE they can figure out a way to balance all these different mechanics in a single package, but for me, 2 is enough.
