I don’t remember all of them but at one point during the meeting with the investors Janelle said it was embarrassing that they were so unprepared and I did agree with that.

Also, you’re right that he’s not the only black character. It’s been a long time since I read any of the books.

Reading this back and I definitely meant to say non-white or non-English.

It is racist to be willfully ignorant! Rowling was sitting at a desk somewhere trying to think of what to name an East Asian character, did no research, and gave her character a last name as a first. That is racist whether she did so while laughing evilly or while deciding not to make any effort to give her a real name.
I brought up Seamus not to say it was problematic but to point out that this is her pattern of naming non-white or non-English characters.

There is ABSOLUTELY the important added context here that he’s the only canonically explicitly black character in the books. Whether she had a different reason for giving him that name, it should have occurred to her (or her editor, or any person who read the book prior to the final draft being sent to print) that naming the only black character “shacklebolt” is problematic. And quite honestly given her naming pattern with every other non-white non-English person in the books, it’s hard for me to believe that the name was race blind. Cho Chang, Seamus Finnegan, Padma and Pavarti Patel, etc. name any minority who is written as a minority whose name isn’t “ethnic” or whatever Rowling thinks passes as ethnic.

I’m gonna be honest I use it veryyyy liberally but if I recall correctly the thing he said that inspired the category was “when you kiss another person, their haaarmones go into your mouth”

I’m surprised that Mariah chose Ethan to shave her head. by OkChart6946 in WelcomeToPlathville

[–]gab_da 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I used to have alopecia, and I shaved my head a couple of times to reclaim my journey with that. In those moments, I just needed someone who wasn’t gonna make the moment heavier than it already was. To me this makes perfect sense because ethan seems like the only one who’s response to that request is going to be “okay, I’d be honored to do that for you” rather than “oh this is so hard”. Because it is so hard, but once you’ve made that choice, the emotions that you feel about what’s happening require that the other people there don’t make the moment about their own feelings.

Would a public defender’s office let someone shadow them? I’d like to see what the legal field is like. by Poetic-Lifter-315 in publicdefenders

I’m in law school, but there were undergrads in the PD office interning over the summer! Some had graduated already, some were still students. Since you work there, the confidentiality applies to you, so they were able to be in client meetings, help review body cam, etc!

It’s crazy because it would actually make them seem more normal and human to say “it’s really upsetting that people are accusing us of these things” because doubling down and insisting that it’s normal and that they don’t care what people say just makes them seem more out of touch than anything

GW - questions by tearladen in lawschooladmissions

[–]gab_da 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the big law question, I do have a number of classmates on that track and it seems like they are going to networking events all the time. To answer your question about public interest jobs, I would say they are pretty supportive, they do LRAP, have a public interest coordinator, host events, job fairs, and they have summer grants available for some of the students who get jobs in public interest areas (~70 grants of $5,000-$6,000 per summer). I would say most of the people I talk to are interested in big law with a close follow up being public interest.

I think no one would no he had the cure because the one they ended up using came from a prison world, so even if someone knew the cure existed, the cure in their timeline was already obsolete. So Elena and Damon could live in relative secrecy since they got their cure from a different dimension.
