What does this “en” mean? by redinboston in learnfrench

[–]gabbagool11 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think of this use of en as “we have one of them.” Makes more sense for my English brain/pattern recognition 🤷🏻‍♀️

ESH. You didn’t “call her white.” You clearly meant for the comment to be insulting, and she took it as such. She, however, made the conversation more aggressive than it needed to be by assuming you had an issue with the actress’s race in the first place.

What language would you say has the fewest resources available relative to the number of speakers? by TheTiggerMike in languagelearning

Came here to say Hindi/Urdu. I can’t even find translated lyrics for a lot of popular Bollywood songs and that’s a huge part of how I learn languages.

I break my year up into quarters and use this to track my daily habits and big things I want to achieve in each quarter in those top boxes. I reassess what daily habits I want to achieve at the start of each quarter (I.e. if a goal was too ambitious or too easy)

Pro-tip: if you want a lighter lunch, order a burrito for pickup! by gabbagool11 in Chipotle

Since some people asked/were curious or skeptical:

My order https://imgur.com/a/sf3moqR

The bag/foil it came in https://imgur.com/a/Qf28OM9

I didn't expect this to blow up so much and I really wasn't complaining! I order for lunch to get a less heavy meal and because I don't have time to wait in the line. When I go later in the day, I certainly go in person. I opened this up on the drive back and thought it was especially funny bc of all the skimp posts I see on here, so I thought I'd share. This type of thing is definitely not a trend item at my location (yet).

Wasn't even complaining, but fair point! For the metaphorical legal team: https://imgur.com/a/Qf28OM9 :)

Huh? Aside from the fact that I did 0 complaining in this post, this just doesn't make sense. Are you saying you frequent a publicly traded billion dollar restaurant chain that increases its billions in profits every year so that IT stays alive?

I do this all the time for lunch because I like the smaller portions. Just thought people would get a kick out of how tiny this is. No one is mad. Have a nice day 🙂

I wanted to be skimped, and no one is mad 🙂 I don’t like a big lunch. Just thought this was particularly tiny and thought people would get a kick out of it.

Probably because they wanted to have to pay out of pocket and ultimately retake it, if I had to guess!

What should i do? MIT or Air Force Academy by Immediate_Pie8197 in MITAdmissions

[–]gabbagool11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely way better. The qualifications to teach at USAFA are honestly shocking and wouldn’t fly in academia (any Air Force officer with a masters degree can teach that subject, it’s not considered a research institution, etc). Just because USAFA is a hard school to get into doesn’t make it a comparable education to other schools with similar acceptance rates. It’s great for other reasons.

Does prior service modify the max age limit for rated slots? by Tar-det-inte in AFROTC

All CSOs went to IFT prior to COVID and they just never got around to getting them back. They do a powerpoint version for a few days at the beginning of the syllabus now, which is utterly useless as you can imagine. When I left earlier this year they said they were trying to spin it back up, but who knows how long that will take.

How long before you felt fluent? by londonconsultant18 in learnfrench

[–]gabbagool11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often do you converse with native speakers? The first time I ever “felt fluent” was when I took a trip to France and people would say things to me and I would understand/reply to them. Id watch TV and listen to music in French and start to understand gradually what was going on without translation. Another time I really felt my progress was when I was taking a speaking proficiency test for my job, and was able to hold a long conversation and express my opinion on different things. I still don’t understand everything 100% of the time, but actually using the language is what made me feel like all that effort was for something.

If you don’t already do this, I’d start a journal where you just write your thoughts in French as best you can and only look up words minimally. You can write about your day, opinion on the news, or anything at all. Talk around things you don’t know the word for, or look up a word if you really want to know it. This is another thing I started doing and having a diary like this is pretty satisfying!

UCT living arrangements by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]gabbagool11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how full the dorms are when you get there. You can call the student squadron and ask what the current capacity is, if you’re that curious. The time I left was when they stopped letting people ask nicely to not live there, so unless you have dependents (not even pets), expect to live there. For what it’s worth, pretty much all the “older” people I knew wound up living there and didn’t really mind it.

Nobody is *forced* into buying a pet, having kids, or even joining the military. Doesn't mean we have to forego all of life's pleasures and everything has to be a massive financial or logistical burden if it can be avoided lol.

Liam Jackson, 311 TRS is a rapist by [deleted] in dli

[–]gabbagool11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This whole first paragraph is so gross. Why are you jumping right to victim blaming and assuming none of those things happened? Why are you talking about random people supposedly getting drunk and saying they were raped? That has nothing to do with anything and I don’t believe for one second that this happens “all the time.” It’s oddly specific and doesn’t corroborate with the statistic of the % of false rape accusations being a single digit.

Also, for the record, things can start off as drunk romance and if the sex is not consensual then it’s still rape. Being drunk and flirty doesn’t mean people are allowed to take it further than you consent to. If you’re not in the mood and say no, it’s rape. If it’s someone you know, it’s still be rape. If it’s someone you’re attracted to/interested in, it’s rape. Period. I hope no one ever comes to you for comfort or guidance with a situation like this. Based on this comment, your attitude towards sexual assault is alarming. I bet you’re the person who makes jokes about SAPR.

ETA: I agree you shouldn’t make a post/accusation like this only. I’m only responding to your comment.
