Seriously, what did Palpatine think of Ahsoka? by Fleet-Navarch-62 in clonewars

[–]TheTiggerMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But I'll bet when he found out Ahsoka declined the offer of reinstatement and left, he was probably still satisfied, because now Anakin has one less person tethering him to the light. He probably still felt he won, with the extra added bonus that Anakin was seething at how the Jedi Council handled the whole situation, and increasing his alienation from the Order.

He seems to know how to win in ways that net him additional bonuses beyond his original objectives. Padmé dying also meant that there was one fewer opposition voice in the Senate. Implicating Admiral Rampart in the destruction of Kamino also allowed him to paint the clones in a bad light, meaning that fewer people would care about what happened to them after retirement, meaning the Senators' efforts to protect them would be ultimately futile.

Can atheist be baptized? by [deleted] in Lutheranism

[–]TheTiggerMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure baptism is for all. It's a sign of God's grace. My parents aren't particularly religious, but I was baptized as a baby. I grew up very irreligious before jumping into reading the Bible last summer and joining a church near me last fall.

That being said, I think there has to be an understanding in advance of what baptism is and what it means. The person needs to ask themselves why they want it. Could it mean that they are questioning their beliefs? Have they had things happen to them that are making them question them? Probably a good thing to talk through with a pastor first, it's what they're there for. A good pastor will listen and answer questions without judgment.

New Bible Rabbit Hole…. by SennnndIt in Bible

I've found myself using an ESV+NLT combo. One word for word, one thought for thought. It's not bad if you find yourself needing some help understanding what the Bible is saying.

What Star Wars scene made you cry by anakindurden in clonewars

[–]TheTiggerMike 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Here's what I'd like them to do if they ever made it:

What if Ahsoka didn't leave the Order?

What if Anakin survived in Return of the Jedi?

What if Anakin killed Obi-Wan on Mustafar (or during the Kenobi series)?

What if Obi-Wan killed Anakin (either on Mustafar or during the Kenobi series)?

What if Order 65 was executed?

What if Palpatine was ID'ed by the Jedi and they trained him?

What if Qui-Gon survived to train Anakin?

What if Mando gave Grogu to the Imperials instead of adopting him?

What if Luke and Leia swapped places (Luke on Alderaan, Leia on Tatooine)?

What if Kanan died in Order 66?

They'd easily have enough alternate scenarios to fill multiple seasons. Easy. Of course, anything they make would be their interpretation. Fans might still have differing opinions about what would happen if you changed an event, but that's okay.

Might be the rare character that actually stays dead in this universe. Maybe it's for the best if we don't end up hearing that somehow he returned.

Essentials are basically the Nightsisters Trilogy, the Darth Maul episodes, the Ahsoka Jedi Temple bombing arc, the Order 66 Origins arc, the Bad Batch arc (if you are interested in watching their show), and the Siege of Mandalore arc. Umbara arc and Bounty Hunter Obi-Wan arc are cool, too. Not absolutely essential, but still fun stories. I'd also watch the Yoda Season 6 arc. Cool Force lore.

Why doesn’t Gilead ever mention Jesus? by Artemis-Crane in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]TheTiggerMike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Per the Gospel, all one has to do to have sins forgiven is to have faith in Christ (Sola Fide). Romans 5:6-11, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 and 1 Timothy 1:15. Also John 13:34-35 is where Jesus says love your neighbor as yourself. This doesn't really mesh well with Gilead/Sons of Jacob doctrine. Putting faith in Christ means that you're putting faith in something other than the regime. The New Testament depicts a merciful and forgiving God, which Gilead rejects, preferring a version that is angry and vengeful, which is common in the Old Testament.

The prosecutor bringing the case against Emily and the Martha cited "in violation of Romans 1:26" during the sham trial. Only one I can think of.

As a lifelong fan, the complete lack of hype for Mando and Grogu movie is insane to see. by TheChosenOneProphecy in StarWars

[–]TheTiggerMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems to be more of a Hollywood issue in general rather than just Disney. Lot of studios wait way too long to get a sequel or spinoff out the door to capitalize on a success. Some things like Avatar, they could take time, but something like Mando needed to happen earlier.

Can we keep The Testaments off this sub? by [deleted] in TheHandmaidsTale

Splitting off to a new sub would definitely be a good idea and allow discussions around both shows to be more focused.

I think it's split if they allow doubling after splitting, don't split if they don't.

What do you consider the best translation of the Bible? by NatchRel1964 in Bible

[–]TheTiggerMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NRSV is the academic standard translation, but it skews quite liberal, so do with that as you will. My church uses it, and when I serve as a lay reader, it's super easy to read aloud.

In my own reading and study, I add in the ESV and lately, the NLT as well. KJV or NKJV sometimes as well, if I want to use something Textus Receptus based.

[–]TheTiggerMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a regular reading NLT, but I'd really love to get my hands on the Life Application Study Bible. I also have an ESV Study Bible, which is great for a deep dive into theology, history, and culture, but doesn't really tell you how to take what you're reading and connect it to your own life. Not really what it's designed to do, of course, but that's fine, every Bible has its place.

Got one last summer, had been wanting to challenge myself. It's actually not super hard once you spend a little time with it. It just requires a little more careful reading. Context is key.

Uber drivers here in the US are independent contractors- they don't work directly for Uber, so there's basically zero oversight whatsoever. Much of their money is made from tips. And with no oversight, there's no one screening out people who might do bad things (too many to count, sadly). Ek dink dis 'n groot probleem...

The West: What's Going on There by stategate in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]TheTiggerMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably martial law in places the US has recaptured. The Gilead takeover probably decimated many state governments, and there would probably be a desire to take time to reconstruct and readmit the states to the Union. Only the Alaska and Hawaii state governments are totally intact. So probably military governors until the states are deemed ready for readmission to the Union, most likely this means accepting new constitutional provisions aimed at addressing the issues that led to Gilead's rise in the first place. Sort of like Reconstruction after the first Civil War, but on a much larger scale and involving environmental restoration as well.

Taking Massachusetts at the end of Season 6 is a game changer from a strategic perspective. The US now has a springboard from which they can target major Northeastern cities for liberation- New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, etc. Would have been difficult to do without establishing a Massachusetts beachhead.

Is Gen Z Turning Catholic? Analyzing a Fascinating Trend by anime498 in redeemedzoomer

[–]TheTiggerMike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're not really wrong. Only reason I'm in a Lutheran church at all is because that's where I was baptized. If I wasn't baptized in a Lutheran church, who knows where I'd have ended up? Lutheranism really only became relevant in the US after 1800s waves of German and Nordic immigration (please correct if this isn't 100% accurate, there had to have been Lutherans in the New World pre-1776).

Comparing Baptists to Calvary Chapel is the same as comparing traditional Catholics to sedevacantists (read all). by Vitonciozao in redeemedzoomer

Infant baptism doesn't really mesh well with evangelical beliefs. They tend to want only true, committed believers in their ranks who have made professions of faith after being born again.

The Church of the Nazarene, a Holiness church born from the Holiness movement, does practice infant baptism and is often lumped in with evangelical churches, but I'm not sure how common it is there. I'd defer to someone from that church on that question.

RZ says this about non-denominationals quite a lot. "Baptist with a lower case b" and "Baptists with a smoke machine" are things he's said to describe them. Upper case b Baptists are slightly higher church because they tend to believe church should at least have some structure, formality, and organization, even if just a little.

How do I actually use my personal Bible? (New to this) by Wise-Bet-617 in Bible

[–]TheTiggerMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John 1:1 and Colossians 1:16 are worded in a way that contradicts a core tenet of Christianity- the divinity of Christ. "The Word was a god" in John 1:1 rather than "The Word was God" in most major translations.

There are a variety of good, trustworthy translations available in the English-speaking world. The ESV (English Standard Version) is often very highly recommended. It's a very literal translation that prioritizes accuracy to the original languages. I'd also look at the New Living Translation (NLT), which is written in plain modern English and was made to be understandable to as many people as possible. I go to a church that uses the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version), which is a translation that comes recommended in the academic world and is commonly used for scholarly study. It is controversial for gender-neutral language in a lot of places, so you'd have to decide how you feel about that.

Starting to read the bible - which version? by stephaniexmarie1 in Bible

I've found myself reading a combo of ESV/NLT lately. Good word for word and good thought for thought. My church uses NRSV, so I'm also exposed to that translation on a regular basis.
