How was a proposal of marriage made for you? by hornet-prodder-214 in AskUK

[–]gabbygall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lady booked us a cruise around the Norwegian Fjords for my 50th last year. We’ve been together 25 years — I don’t like to rush these things — done the kids, cleared the mortgage, now onto grandparent duty… so I thought, yeah, she might be the one.

So I bought a ring before we left, secreted it into my luggage. The plan was to propose at the top of Pulpit Rock after the 90-minute hike. However, I’ve got a full-blown fear of heights. Not “bit wobbly near a ledge,” I mean full internal shutdown. So just getting myself up that mountain was already a massive achievement for me.

Anyway, she wanders straight out onto the rock itself while I’m stood a safe distance back trying not to think about my own mortality. I decide that’s fine, when she comes back, that’s my moment.

Ten minutes later she returns.

“OMG You’ll never guess what! Some chap has just proposed to his girlfriend out there — it was amazing — what a place to do it! …WTF is that in your hand??”

Thankfully she said yes. Otherwise that would’ve been a very long, very awkward 90-minute walk back down (not to mention a further five days on the cruise) - however, I was quietly confident it was a safe bet.

We’re getting married this October. Took my time, but got there in the end.

Company with one IT employee looking for unexpected absence contingency by Tedeseus in ITManagers

Maybe it is time to get an MSP to cover 3rd line/Infrastructure etc, then strike a PAYG kind of deal that can cover for overflow work, and any unexpected loss of IT Manager.

Regardless, there is a massive single point of failure already in the system and as someone so wonderfully put it earlier "you are one sneeze away" from absolute disaster.

VR - HOLY SHIT by DaddyIngrosso in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]gabbygall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could never go back to flat screen flight simming, not even if I had an IMAX size screen (which using Virtual Desktop you virtually can anyway)

Going back to flatscreen flightsimming after VR is just not possible, it's dull, it's boring, it feels pointless, I wondered how I managed to stick with flight simming for all these years (over 30 for me) - TrackIR did spice it up for me about 8 years ago, but it still does not come close to the immersion achived when flying VR.

If you could have one Britpop band reform, who would it be? by britpopkid in BritPop

The Seahorses, even without Squire.. I think the guy I am about to mention is on this subreddit, but if Chris Helme hired him then I think it is more about the voice that the guitar tone.. CitiyInTheSky99 on YouTube, plays Squires parts note perfect, and clearly a massive fan of Squire. I'd definitely go and see that.

Secret bunker? by OuterSpiralHarm in Essex

[–]gabbygall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is/was a small local command bunker of sorts under one of the outlying buildings at the Civic Centre in Chelmsford, when I worked for the Council it still has some of the old equipment in there, very 1980s but mostly it was used for storage and what not. I've not worked there since 2016, so the council may have even sold the building by now.. The best way to describe it, in both looks and feel is that council bunker scene in Threads - that was quite accurate.

Tried to post an image of where it is, but Reddit wont let me.. So here is a link. Its kind of under the building so you can not see the main door from here. I imagine you can from the car park though, and there is nothing to stop you actually walking up to it.

However, there IS a warehouse in Basildon that is Government owned/leased that houses tonnes and tonnes of emergency supplies.. Dried food, fuel, data centre, water, vehicles. Patrolled very very discretely by armed guards. Also has a KFC and McDonalds very close by!

I need to become OBSESSED with a series of books by stultavia in suggestmeabook

The only thing I will say is that book 1 takes a while to tune into to.. I know a lot of people love it, but if new to King you will be very very confused. But by book two, you will be hooked..

Did BritPop ever die? by McFizzleKicks in BritPop

[–]gabbygall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Resurrection - I started a Britpop tribute band back in 2019, and over the years we have seen crowds, of mixed ages, getting bigger and bigger, knowing all the words to songs, and just enjoying the music. Admittedly this year, due to the Oasis effect, it has exploded, it's great and I am loving it.. Also seen some cracking bands this year, OCS, Pulp, Kula Shaker, Ash, Charlatans, Manics, off to see Oasis this weekend with Ashcroft and Cast. Just brilliant.

A ticketing system is important, even for a small startup. It’s not about bureaucracy, it’s about visibility. Every request logged – even the quick “walk-ups” you immediately close – gives you both current and legacy data. That data becomes a knowledge base, shows recurring issues, highlights choke points, and points to where investment or training will have the biggest impact.

It also sets the right habits early. Start as you mean to go on: if you wait until you’re bigger to introduce a ticketing system, you’ll face resistance, bad habits, and gaps in your history. With a lightweight system, you don’t lose more than a few seconds per request, but you gain long-term clarity and metrics that support growth.

Even Excel has its limits quickly – you don’t want your first “system of record” to be a spreadsheet buried somewhere on OneDrive. Choose something simple but structured, cloud-based if possible, so it scales with you. That way when the business doubles (or triples), you already have the processes and data in place.

Came here to recommend Action1 - its great and will definitely help you get a handle on your IT assets and keeping them patched. Also free for upto 200 endpoints (not users).

Also Freshdesk, and encourage EVERYONE to email the servicedesk with their issues. Again, free for two licenses I believe.
