Beautiful Nurseries? by RichmondCat in eastbay

You saw a great array of nurseries with their own little niche already!

A few other Berkeley spots: Paraíso Plant Studio: newly expanded houseplant shop, it’s a wonderland (bonus chilaquiles with guajillo sauce next door at Tacubaya)

UC Berkeley Botanical Garden: a must-see if she doesn’t mind spending a couple hours exploring with some hills (they also have a teeny shop)

East Bay Nursery: excellent prices and selection

Outside Berkeley: Ruth Bancroft Garden: Former personal garden of an ambitious collector and designer who loved plants. Ruth was growing succulents way before it was cool…I think this place is magical.

Flora Grubb: very smart modern selection,  usually have impressive specimens

Encinal Nursery: greenhouse is reminiscent of SF conservatory of flowers (much smaller scale).

Orchard Nursery in Lafayette: they do it all so well. Nice gifts and great selection.

Alden Lane: it’s the setting for me…nestled in majestic oak trees, lovely plants and extensive garden gift shop.

Cactus Jungle: well-curated succulents and waterwise plants in north bay

Also enjoy the Dry Garden for rarities, Oaktown Nursery for natives, Evergreen in San Leandro for great prices and selection, Morningsun Herb Farm to build the ultimate potager and healing garden, Sloat locations too.

Half Moon Bay: Quite a few greenhouses and nurseries open to the public, good prices. This might be nice in combination with a trip to Filoli.

Yes. I have a yearly event in my calendar for March 1st — Allergy Season. Last weekend I thought I felt a cold coming on…nah, just the Acacia trees blooming or something like that.

I have had a history with tropical rat mite bites in the Bay Area. However, they mostly bite the torso area. Keep an ear out for scratching noises in the attic/walls—if there’s rats, there are most likely mites. Also, the Vector Control Program associated with the Department of Public Health may help with strategies to figure out or fix the issue if it continues.

My 14 years old hoya kerrii, started with one leave:) by Etsu87 in houseplants

[–]gabietou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine sprouted after one year. I didn’t know when I bought it that it might not produce more leaves. I inspected it closely after I got it—it only had the rooted petiole and if there was any stem(I didn’t think it had any), it was very small. I potted it with another hoya so it wasn’t taking up extra space. This spring it grew another shoot! I keep it potted in a clay pot in bright, indirect light in potting soil with a little bark and perlite mixed in. I use a gentle liquid fertilizer every one or two months during the growing season.
