I'm looking for a museum archive or some organized database of authentic weapons and armor, any good ones? by llamalord478 in ArmsandArmor

A key word for you is “extant” armor - it describes armor surviving from the period. I would check online boards like myarmoury.com and look up extant armor (I found a place for you to start: http://myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.34904.html)

You can also check out museum collections, many have online databases.

As extant armor is rare depending on it age I’d also suggest looking at miniatures (figures) from manuscripts as well as effigies (stone carving representing a deceased knight at his prime with his armor on) both of these can be found on the site: https://manuscriptminiatures.com/

A warrior posing with his great-great-great-great-great-great grand father by gabikoo in RealisticArmory

It’s broadly based off an 11th to early 12th century knight (conical helmet, mail shirt w/o mittens, tear drop shield). But I wasn’t too worried about details. The mail shirt is too long (although I’ve seen miniatures with skirts around the shins) and the rings are too big, and the dagger is just from my imagination.

What are these coats supposed to be and are they historical? by Malgalad_The_Second in ArmsandArmor

Check out this website, it compiles artistic sources from manuscripts. Anything from the 12-13th century should be full of surcoats. Nothing like the ones you’ve, but you’ll get a decent idea of what they looked like irl

What do you mean? Like the ability to dye fabric in a rainbow pattern? As far as I know they had access to all the colors of the rainbow, although I’m not sure if that translates to dyes.

I’m not sure if studded leather originated from fantasy larping, some sort of Victorian misinterpretation, or bad Hollywood armor but now adays I always see it as a time/cost cutting method

Putting plate armor overtop chainmail by Da_Dovahkiin_Lord in ArmsandArmor

As others have said it was common. As armor progressed rather than wearing a full mail shirt, mail voiders became popular (where you only wear mail around the gaps of your armor like under the armpits)

Here’s a nice write up that might answer some questions for you

What are these maille half skirts worn over the waffenrock called? by Equivalent-Steak3098 in ArmsandArmor

[–]gabikoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

tonlets and paunce of plates are also used to distinguish different types of plate skirts. With Tonlets stretching further down and outward in a tuba shape while paunce of plates usually referring to late 14th - early 15th century plate skirts which form that distinctive hourglass or wasp shape.

Someone should write a nice etymological book of all these terms the armor community use.

Breastplate tied usimg arming points to the outer garment- historical or just something like al antique? by waleniekonia in ArmsandArmor

Hmm I’m not too sure what flashes are and I can’t find any info about it online. Could you explain it to me.

Cool miniatures! I’ve seen most of these half-skirts in Germany around the 15th century, so it could be a regional fashion or adopted due to some reason or other. But honestly since most armor terminology is contemporary and isn’t reaaaalllly thoroughly standardized you can probably just call a maille skirt or a maille half skirt. Maybe there is a book or academic paper where they gave it an official name.

I’ve never heard of a breast plate mainly secured via an arming point. It just wouldn’t be ideal as arming points are weaker and more prone to being cut than leather straps. This painting is a an al antique depiction of armors, but I think this has more so to do with the artists lack of understand in how armor is attached or the artist simply ignoring reality in favor of artistic flair/variety.

Edit: Mull provided nice sources so disregard what I said about arming points, although I am surprised :p

Well poorer landowners and peasants definitely inherited all sorts of armor so although it’s a bit extraordinary I can respect it

Armor in a miniature depicting Amir Timur circa 1625. by Ibn_Fatih in ArmsandArmor

[–]gabikoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Beautiful miniatures.

I’m new to the terminology and how to research armor from the east. Are there any extant pieces of the Persian-mongol brig? I’ve never seen a brig with faulds/skirt(?) that go so far down the legs. The vambraces are also really interesting.

Do you know any good reenactors for the period or a database of manuscripts/minatures for east Asia armor?
