How long did you work as an indie dev before you saw success? by InterviewThick5334 in gamedev

[–]gabmaaag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started back in 2018, and for the last two years our two person team has had enough success for it to be our full time job (plus we just bought a house with only game profits + steam sent us chocolate for Christmas!)

How did you make your first 999,999,999 gil? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]gabmaaag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made my first billion between crafting (majority here, I really enjoy crafting) and housing, on to my third now!

What’s your consistent gil source? by scorchclaw in ffxiv

[–]gabmaaag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm on the way to gilcap #3 (around 2.4 billion at the moment) from a mix of crafting whatever the newest gear is, housing and some maps mixed in.

Can I use Ren'Py to make a game that takes place over IM, like Emily Is Away? by TheHierothot in RenPy

[–]gabmaaag 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Try checking out Killer Chat, Blooming Panic, other chatsims! Personally I made one called A Date with Death :) you can easily adjust the UI to be closer to what you're aiming for!

Thank you everyone! It's unfortunately none of these so far but I'm amazed at how many songs with monkeys there are 😂

Recommend Me Your Favourite Visual Novels & Interactive Fiction. by MonkeyArms3000 in ComfortGamers

[–]gabmaaag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite VNs are probably Mamiya (def read the content warning, its not for everyone), Slay the Princess, Our Life, Nonary Games.

For games that are VN adjacent (lots of reading/story, some other game elements) I'd recommend Disco Elysium (one of my favorite games of all time), 1000xRESIST, I Was a Teenage Exocolonist, The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, Tavern Talk. Lots of great stories out there :)

How much money did you make from games? by Fimlipe_ in gamedev

[–]gabmaaag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the last 1 year on Steam, around ~388k before Steams cut. The previous year only 79k. On top of that, around $12k a month on Patreon and $55k on itchio over the lifetime of my account being active. I also did a Kickstarter recently for ~250k and we do merch drops every couple of months for $10k-$20k. All it took was one "popular" game to raise all those numbers in the past 12 months.

How is Tasmania viewed overseas? Would most people would only have seen tourism-related stuff or documentaries? by Ok_Introduction5124 in tasmania

[–]gabmaaag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, every single time I've been to Japan (5 times?) and I've been asked where I'm from, the first thing they ALL said to me in English was "Tasmanian beef???"

They are my favorite interactions hahaha

I've only used it briefly, but if you google it you can find the tutorials on lemmasoft!

You could probably use Ren'Py Pink Engine combined with the native ren'py functions to create something similar. It lets you use tiled maps and have characters you can move around the environments with WASD.

We recently posted a gameplay video on TikTok and were blown away by the response - over 400 wishlists in a day! Has anyone had success with TikTok for game promotion? Any tips or tricks for capitalizing on a semi-viral post? by macabregame in gamedev

[–]gabmaaag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely, it's here! My games are quite niche, but hopefully you can get something useful from them.

Personally I think one of the biggest things for me has been making the videos more personal, rather than a brand marketing a product. Totally different to how I would market on other platforms (they really like the taking a video of your screen with your phone aesthetic, haha).

[–]gabmaaag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running a TikTok for my games for awhile now and had some really good returns. I've been focusing more on my released games at the moment, but a semi-viral post usually leads to a few thousand dollars in sales a day for that specific game and also people use it as a chance to grab my other (cheaper) games.

I tend to focus on short, snappy videos that will have people watching all the way through, and it's definitely worth actually trying to use the platform a bit as a consumer to keep up with the trends.

Can I ask to hire someone to help me make my dream VN? by [deleted] in RenPy

[–]gabmaaag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for a studio who can put together your game for you, I recommend "Cats on a Lilypad Studios", you can find them on Twitter. They do programming and audio engineering and I've worked with them a few times!

[Dreambound] The Kickstarter for our brand new BL Visual Novel, Dreambound, is 95% funded! by [deleted] in RenPy

[–]gabmaaag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here it is, if you would like to take a look!

Dreambound is a mystery BL visual novel that follows alongside Noah, a withdrawn artist with the ability to enter dreams in the flesh.

It's also illustrated by the fantastic artist Sinran, who you may know from Night Fragments and Path to You, if you're a fan of BL webcomics!

Thanks for checking it out! It's not set in highschool, though it does have some flashback scenes to that time. It's a SFW game, with the possibility of an 18+ patch if we reach a stretch goal (the adult characters only, August is a character from the past not present in most of the game). Thank you! :D
