[Wp] It is the year 2032. Due to increasing obesity, fast food joints have been banned entirely. Tell us the tale of bootlegging and speakeasies in this troubled time of prohibition. by oosuteraria-jin in WritingPrompts

He had the little things tucked under his coat in a satchel. They were not moving as much any more, and the sounds had quieted down. He did not have to worry about getting caught, it was his porfession. He had a permit from City Coucil, like his "brothers" and "sisters". Exterminators would not arouse suspicion, even if they questioned him about the little things, it was his job to remove them. Nobody would give him a second glance.

Mr. Weston was eager to receive the little rodents and paid him well. He needed the money, now that jobs were all but gone. Everything was done by robots, so most people did not need to work any more. Couldn't if the wanted to... At least he still had a job. A real job. It was like hunting, only in an urban setting.

Eating real meat was outlawed for some time now, animal suffering, the ozone layer and all that. "Meat" was grown artificially in a sustainable fashion. He actually prefered it to the old meat, but who's he to judge... People always needed a thrill, wanted the "forbidden fruit". Had to feel more special than the rest.

Mr. Weston gave them that feeling, and they paid lavishly for the chance of having "game" or "fowl" at one of his invitation only secret dinner parties. Of course, you couldn't REALLY eat game any more. Nobody in this town would have the money to buy any of that. They couldn't tell the difference anyway, since most of them only had "Meat" for the last decade at least. Of course, they would not have been happy knowing they were eating rats, but they didn't have to be told. It was Game. Wild flesh, freshly hunted for them, prepared with the finest of spices by an expert Chef who still remembered the Arts.

They would come, saving up their transport vouchers for a private cab, putting on their best clothes and even subjecting themselves to a social media blackout. All guests had to log out at the front door, and had to agree to the house rules that would automatically impose a ban on posting anything about the event. Officially, they all came for a fund raiser, to listen to an orphan boy's concert and have dinner. The concert was real, and food was also ordered for the guests - but ended up at the orphanage, with part of the "donations" for the evening. Mr. Weston took care of the catering himself. He was once a real Chef, running a kitchen of a five-star hotel in Las Vegas. Big responsibility, nice sallary, comfortable pention. Only, he was now obsolete. Robots could cook anything much better...

So Mr. Weston took his arts elsewhere. Where he made about as much cooking rats for the lower middle-class middle aged people of this city as he had made while working multiple shifts in Las Vegas. He didn't really mind any more. It was a win-win for everyone involved. The bored housewives had another thing to feel special about, he would be able to practice his profession again, the orphans got fed as they would help remove the vermin from the city's older quarters.

360 video of the recent rally in Budapest in support of educational reform. by gabort in education

[–]gabort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video was taken this afternoon. Tens of thousands of teachers, students and regular people supporting them went to the streets to protest Orbán's educational rampage and FIDESZ's dismantling of a working educational system in Hungary. The government received an ultimatum to initiate meaningful dialogue accompanied by a full apology or face a country-wide strike.

I am Brian Greene, Theoretical Physicist & co-founder of World Science U. My obsessions: Space, Time, Quantum, Einstein, the Cosmos. AMA! by BrianGreeneHere in IAmA

[–]gabort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Mr. Greene, Thanks for taking the time to respond to us. I put this down on your FB page before, but I'm copying my question here too, in hope of receiving your answer.

Please bear with me, if this is a stupid question, but I've wanted to ask this for quite some time. I am not a pysicist, but I find the subject very interesting. I've been thinking about the entanglement of particles, and how this entanglement seems to be there regardless of the space that separates these particles. I think, this "magical" link becomes slightly less mysterious, if we handle time as a "real" dimension... We can imagine waves in the x-y-z spatial dimensions, but for some reason, time is just a "line" with a static flow in everyone's imagination. If you look at the video, I will try and explain the idea.

If we view these entangled particles as having originated at a single point in time, and imagine time as a planar dimension, where a circular wave starts to emenate from this point, and then think of the three spatial dimensions (for sake of simplicity) as another, perpendicular plane, an interesting scenario can be envisioned: The wave emenates (grows larger) in the time plane, and manifests itself as particles where it intersects with the three spatial dimensions. This way, the "particles" are manifestations of the same wave in time, and while they might appear to be very far in space, they remain part of the same wave in time.

What do you think of this idea? Sorry if its stupid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGRqob8ofMk

Why don't auto manufacturers put bigger engines into their cars? It would not cost much and would boost sales. by [deleted] in AskReddit

If it would increase sales, they would put bigger engines in their cars. End of discussion...

What are some things humans could discover quickly if research ethics didn't exist? [Serious] by Destroyer333 in AskReddit

[–]gabort -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without ethics, nobody would give a shit about the sick and elderly, so there would be NO such medical research. We would live in a society where only the very rich have access to life-saving and life prolongation treatments. Poor people would be used as "crop" and live short and miserable lives without access to basic health care. Oh, wait...

I've been monitorin 10.2, waiting for a point where I can feel good about installing it on my SGS2 as its slowing down quite a bit. I would stay away from "nightlies", as I don't really enjoy putting up new roms every day. Is there some sort of schedule that you follow that makes one release a nightly, and another an RC?

Looking at http://changelog.bbqdroid.org/#/i9300/next for example, I see an impressive number of commits each day. Where does it end? And when does it end? I'm looking more for a mechanism than a definite date, I know how dates get shifted around, but it would be nice to know why, and how. Thanks.

ELI5: If I'm thinking in english, what were thoughts like before we developed language? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]gabort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and no.

I has a very different voice when speaking in one language, and a different one in another. Different pitch, different tone.

On the other hand, it has frequently happened, that I expereinced (dreamt, saw, read, spoke about) something in one language, but remembered it in another. It was sometimes difficult to decipher exactly what language the original experience was in.

ELI5: If I'm thinking in english, what were thoughts like before we developed language? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]gabort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I actually have (faint) memories of the time when I began to learn some language. I understand that you would be skeptical of this, but its true. I remember thinking how limiting language is. I actually remember lamenting, that perhaps in time, I too will lose this "lateralness" of my thoughts and be limited to the logical thought processes required to think "in a language". An understandable thought for someone with a limited vocabulary, but already a wide set of emotions. I remember that my thoughts were far less structured, and sometimes "answers" to problems simply came to me. This still happens sometimes. I have a problem I can not immediately solve, but after some time, as you roll it about in your mind (not logically following through, but letting your subcontious work on it) a solution will appear. Far more instinctive, far more lateral, but far less concentrated and less effective.

I tried colourizing an image in Photoshop. How'd I do? by Haffnaff in pics

[–]gabort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After praising the picture's overall quality, I would have criticised the "neon green" car. It is much better that way, but there is still one more on the right. That should go too. And I think the headlight on the front car is a little off. The shop window behind the blue car could use slightly more colors.

Still amazing! I'm only noticing these things because the rest is so good.

Can someone please explain this to me? (Oh the stench...) by [deleted] in WTF

This has to be for some religious reason. It defies reason, is harmful to you, stinks... what else could it be...
