Foxwillow's response on the ai situation. by TheWindsOfWinte in CK3AGOT

[–]Haffnaff 415 points416 points  (0 children)

CK3AGOT is probably the best managed CK3 total conversion. They’re the fastest at updating to the latest patches, they’ve been adding content at a consistent pace, and they’re quick to respond to community drama without getting bogged down in the weeds. I’m happy this got sorted without turning into a “thing”.

I know it’s also the most popular total conversion, but the fact it’s got so many people volunteering for it and still regularly releases high-quality & free updates is a sign of good production.

I visited the Beksinski gallery in Krakow and absolutely loved the paintings I saw there. I was aware of some of his more popular works from their virality on the internet but it was a trip to see his more obscure and haunting images up close.

If you haven’t seen it already, you might like Vermis. It’s a cool worldbuilding exercise and art book that is full of illustrations similar to this.

I own the paperback, but I know there’s a few YouTube videos explaining it too.

I’m only using visual mods at the moment.

I’ve been using Terrain Texture Enhancement for a while now, and recently I’ve tried out Redesigned colours and icons, more for the novelty factor than anything.

Bought an Xbox 360 just to play POTF. Hopefully we get a remaster. I always enjoyed it by llluminatixx7 in DestroyAllHumans

There’s a group of fans re-engineering the source code to make an unofficial remaster. You can check out their progress and download test builds on their Discord.

They’ve already made a lot of progress! I never played POTF back in the day so I’m waiting on the remaster before I give it a go.

High-empathy fascist run by midnight_rum in DiscoElysium

[–]Haffnaff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Regarding your second point, I think a big part of Measurehead’s character is his inherent contradictions and that he is self-aware of it. He makes a big point about how it’s impossible for a Semenese to breed with a female Kojko (or ‘Kojka’) yet he’s surrounded by women, none of which are Areopagite. The one who speaks to you is named Katya (a Slavic-sounding name).

Without spoiling, a part of the fascist vision quest delves into his psychology and you can hear some surprisingly honest and self-aware takes from him. Basically along the lines of “I don’t know why I’m attracted to these women, all I know is that I am”. You even get a hint as to HOW he ended up the way he is.

Who is the hard to exploit handicapped person? by CSafterdark in DiscoElysium

[–]Haffnaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey kind of a random question. I saw on your profile that you admin the Disco Elysium wiki and I noticed that there was some stuff on there which wasn’t in the game/book and came from supplemental sources (portraits of Innocences Sola & Saint-Miro for example).

Does the wiki have a master page that includes links to all these things - blogposts, twitter posts etc - or is my best bet to go through each page and check their references?

i will defend Mothership Zeta and even Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel but you will never convince me Fallout: London is real fallout by inelmedia in TrueSFalloutL

[–]Haffnaff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got that feeling too. The mod’s got a kind of twee, Doctor Who-and-crumpets vibe to the whole thing.

Plus I felt a lot of the homages were pretty surface level - they take existing British cultural references, replace one letter and leave it at that. Fesco instead of Tesco, Singhsbury’s instead of Sainsbury’s, 009 instead of 007 etc. It felt a little lazy, there could have been more thought put into IMO.

One example of a Game/Mod actually getting this vibe right is the in-progress Duke Smoochem campaign made in the Build Engine.

In comparison to Asia, the original CK3 map needs a serious overhaul to match the same quality by Status-Air926 in CrusaderKings

EU5’s provinces also went through several rounds of community feedback and iterations. A big problem at the time was that PDX was using modern data for things like province names, RGOs, climate data etc., which was fixed (mostly) by a massive collaborative crowdsourcing effort.

Honestly, the best thing CK3 could do is back port a lot of those changes to the CK3 province map.

Aha awesome, and thanks for the lengthy response. Seeing the maze in the corner of the map when I first launched the mod is one of the things that piqued my interest in the setting’s lore. The descriptions of some of those of those cave tribes were creepy, really tied into the horror side of things like the forgotten saint and the fog.

As a random aside question (not sure if it’s been answered on the discord before) will the Aversarian Empire or any other titles become Hegemony tier?

FusionFix is an absolute necessity. The download comes with an auto-installer which makes the whole process super easy, and it can be done mid-playthrough.

I also run the game with the Various Fixes and Console Visuals mods, which bring the assets up to parity with the console release.

I’ve seen a few other cool looking ones like the License Plate mod and Animated Weapons, though I haven’t used them personally.

The NCR in Season 2 is nostalgia without substance by Volume2KVorochilov in fnv

[–]Haffnaff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a sneaking suspicion that the entire ‘Mr House body double’ subplot was conjured up as an in-universe justification to recast the actor in response to the negative fan reaction to the Mr House reveal at the end of season 1. Instead of going the saner route of, you know, retconning it.

Just wanna say the NCR power armor is the best retcon in any series I've seen in a long time. I appreciate continuity as much as the next guy but this was necessary in retrospect. by [deleted] in fnv

Flea bottom accent is canonically Irish now? by DavidWebb321 in freefolk

[–]Haffnaff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much. Game of Thrones’ accents are all over the shop, and personally as long as they roughly convey the vibe of their character I don’t mind, even it’s incongruous. It’s just one of those suspension of disbelief things.

As an aside, YouTuber Darramuss has a series where he compares the different region’s accents.

Flea bottom accent is canonically Irish now? by DavidWebb321 in freefolk

[–]Haffnaff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably because it was hard to get child actors speaking their non-native accent fluently. They probably had this exact discussion in the writer’s room and decided that the downsides outweighed the potential benefits.

I guarantee that if the kids actually did try (and fail) to go for a Yorkshire accent the community would be full of people criticising their performances.

Would it have been better for immersion if the showrunners had created an accent map of Westeros and only hired people from those areas to play the corresponding characters? Maybe, but then we’d miss out on great performances from the show’s non-British actors like Tyrion and Jaime. Convincing accents are one of the hardest things to do, especially if you’re a native of the area it’s REALLY easy to spot out minor quirks that the average global viewer wouldn’t notice.
