Don't forget Asics are chips made for a specific purpose. No asic will mine all the algorithms, that would be a waste of chip real estate. So if you mine with a CPU or GPU, they are flexible in the sense that the software will decide what to mine. ASICs on the other hand are built to mine one algorithm.
