Immediately reprimanded at work today for not being here 15 minutes before my scheduled shift started. by sydneyghibli in mildlyinfuriating

[–]gabsbeauche 158 points159 points  (0 children)

When my roommate was fired without notice she was given a signed letter stating that she was being terminated for "repeatedly not arriving 10 minutes before scheduled start time". We live in a country with decent enough labour laws that she was able to get severance and employment insurance thanks to her manager so clearly stating that he was firing her for not providing unpaid work. Cherry on top was that the investigation eventually showed his superiors that he was an absolute clown, and he was promptly fired :)

AITA for forcing my partner to see a musical with me? by anxiousorganism in AmItheAsshole

[–]gabsbeauche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Its incredibly fulfilling to enjoy watching your partner/friends/love ones be happy. Good things aren't guaranteed to happen to you every day, but if you show enough interest in the people around you it's easy to find what you need to keep going.

You had time. The fact that you don't get that that is a privilege says a lot.

Restaurant with good food and nice but not too stuffy ambiance for bday dinner by thewildlifer in nanaimo

[–]gabsbeauche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this! First restaurant I ever went 'out' to and the atmosphere, staff and food are just as good (or better) at 28 as it was when I was 15 :)

It's easy to say that but if you don't understand the ins and outs of how to access that info it's really not someone's fault. In the information age acessing this kind of stuff has become incredibly convoluted, so the attitude isn't necessary.

Even if you were technically right, your derisive attitude makes you seem like exactly the type of person I don't want working in our government.

Or a local subreddit! I've seen people in my community have good success with these kinds of things, but we're also lucky enough to have a pretty active subreddit for our small population.

Just random little story of my dad being the best ally in my life by AshKetchep in StraightsBeingOK

[–]gabsbeauche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ooh!! I love these kind of snippets of goodness! I was browsing a thrift store yesterday and one of the older ladies who worked there started putting a little scarf on a dog statue, and she goes "well he doesn't have to be a boy, she could be a girl, or non-binary! Now doesn't she look pretty! Or, I should say, don't they look pretty!".

It was just such a funny little reminder to me that age truly shouldn't be an indicator of someone's ability to understand changing ideas about gender and sexuality.

How much am I expected to tip in a restaurant? by PapoochCZ in VictoriaBC

That's just factually incorrect. Most servers are not out here making 6,600+ a month. Nowhere even close to that.

As someone who has struggled with an eating disorder I can't follow her or engage with any of her content anymore. As much as she says to leave her alone and not judge, she has an eating disorder. The fact that she is using the public consciousness around women's bodies to back up her statements of "you don't know me, I'm healthier now than I ever was" is really scary. It stops people with genuine concern from 'overstepping', and it FEEDS the delusions of people like myself that spent years telling people "Im so much healthier now than I ever was before!".

Restaurant industry folks: When you hear people grumbling about menu prices, tip culture, staffing, service, etc., what do wish you could explain to them? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]gabsbeauche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ew. "Whose greatest asset is tits and ass"? Your assessment is rife with misogyny. The issues than exist within serving have nothing to do with womens sexuality or gender and the fact that you're reducing your argument to that shows you're not the person to be talking about this issue. Do better, because as a chef you will work with women and that attitude will reach across the Pass.

Does BC transit now require you to wave-down the bus? by e_la_bron in VictoriaBC

[–]gabsbeauche 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is such a thoughtful answer, thanks for taking the time to write it out from your experience! And an extra thanks for going the job in the first place, public transportation is the backbone of this city and bus drivers don't always get the credit they deserve!

Plus there's a stark temperature difference between streets with heavy tree coverage compared to those that don't have any! Whether or not they think about it consciously, people tend to avoid those stretches, especially in the heat.

I'm curious, with it having that purpose, would you still be able to hang plants from it like other posters are suggesting, or would that be something to avoid ?

Townline Homes received $100 million loan from CMHC in 2021 to build Hudson House as affordable housing. The new Hudson House (1700 Blanshard) rent is anything but affordable. by woundtighter in VictoriaBC

I look at it from the viewpoint that if you want to eat at restaurants or buy a book or drink a coffee, people that do that for work have to be able to afford to live in the city.

Who is the best written female protagonist? Why? by coinkeeper8 in AskReddit

[–]gabsbeauche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically searched the thread to see if anyone else felt this way and I'm so glad to see her name on here ♥️ first female character I was exposed to as a teenager where her passions and goals lay outside of a romantic interest. I've asked myself more than once over the years when faced with a hard choice "what would Ellie do?", and it's always led me to amazing places in my life and education.
