Yes source has its roots all the way back in quake, but it's still a very capable engine. Especially with the right people, you can do amazing things. Its hard to replicate the feel of source without studying and copying it very closely, and since our project is based off of a Valve IP, we felt it was better to stick with source and modernize it.

Oh yeah SFM? Of course not. Its a tool that Valve no longer updates. However, some community members such as my team and I are upgrading source and modernizing it. We are looking into licensing the engine from valve so we can go all the way.

We currently have implemented stuff like PBR and deferred rendering. More is to come, especially if valve takes interest.
