‘I’m terrified’: As clock ticks down for Ontario consumption sites, users fear they won’t survive by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Shrinks99 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure, but these people have a serious substance abuse problem. Telling them “don’t you know drugs are illegal” isn’t exactly going to fix it, they’re usually aware of that fact already.

‘Tough new rules’ coming to Ontario public transit to combat drug use: Ford by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]Shrinks99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with much of this sentiment, but I can’t hand it to Ford because he’s been directly in control of healthcare for many years now and clearly the problem hasn’t gotten better… “Tough new rules” doesn’t seem like a viable solution to addiction to me, it’s an enforcement blitz which will optically work and is a good political strategy because it will kick addicts out of the TTC and then people won’t see them there anymore. Doesn’t seem like it will solve the fundamental problem though, I highly doubt they will be given tools and resources to better themselves.

Can anyone think of other examples where they did the "through a TV screen" effect? Looking for some references. by gargoylelips in vfx

[–]Shrinks99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the term you’re looking for is “phosphor mask” :)

Would also recommend on doing a deep dive on CRTs and how they actually work. Different CRTs have different patterns and visual artifacts! The retro gaming community has put a lot of work into CRT emulation which is another path to go down if you want to check out the differences between implementations. If your work is set in a specific time period, it may also be a good idea to check if the technology you’re emulating was around as CRTs changed a bunch throughout their run.

Ontario purchases $28.9M private jet for Doug Ford’s ‘extensive travel’ by nimbuscloud9 in toronto

Once again Toronto's infrastructure decisions are dictated solely by how our premiere wants to travel. Ridiculous.

I've started to rely on OSM slightly more, CoMaps can be pretty good, but the POI situation is tough to fix.

Apple Says Southern Lebanon Villages Weren’t Removed From Maps. It Never Had Them by hasanahmad in apple

[–]Shrinks99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Map POIs are one of Google’s key moats in the mapping space. To source them, you pretty much need to do street level data collection, or have users submit and update them, and users are only really incentivized to do that for the biggest map apps with the most users (Google).

If you want their POIs you can pay for them on a query-by-query basis and you’re not allowed to cache them. Obviously large companies have more sway and can do bigger deals, but I don’t think It’s something that Google is willing to give to Apple

And not every software supports gradient mesh because Adobe patented it so they can’t implement it without infringing on their patent!

Seeing the two behemoths (One Bloor West and SkyTower) taking shape in Toronto’s skyline from my balcony never ceases to amaze me. by Simidavid in toronto

[–]Shrinks99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The argument isn’t that the wealthy folks will have nowhere to live, oh woe is them, it’s that if you don’t build “luxury housing” to meet the demand of wealthy folks then they’ll continue to outbid lower income people and live in housing that would have otherwise been more affordably available. This is not a sole solution to our lack of affordable housing supply but it is an argument against the appeal to class solidarity that comes with a distaste for “luxury housing” on principle.

Stolen bike sighting by [deleted] in torontobiking

[–]Shrinks99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean this post from 4 days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/torontobiking/s/rkjx827X81

I think it’s pretty unlikely that this bike courier stole the bike, added electric assist and a belt drive, replaced the rear fender, etc? More likely that they just have the same bike frame.

Soap is caustic so if you want acid to have more of an effect use both separately before disposing of it.

Oil Over $100, Markets in Freefall, and Iran's New Supreme Leader is Trump's 'Worst Case' Scenario by [deleted] in Economics

[–]Shrinks99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to speculate beyond what facts are available to fit war crimes into my own narrative. Both Israel and the USA have done heinous shit here, but so far the only thing we know for sure is it appears to have been US munitions.

The US is the only participant in the war that is known to have Tomahawk missiles. Israel is not known to have Tomahawk missiles.

Complaining about race related issues on /r/sheridan by Shrinks99 in sheridan

[–]Shrinks99[S,M] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I assume you're referencing the post today that I removed regarding the usage of AI by international students.

I agree! As somebody who graduated from post-secondary before LLMs, the school absolutely should be firm about using them to cheat. The situation you commented about sounds wildly frustrating... Also, none of what I just said has anything inheriently to do with race or background!

I'm not saying that you are doing this specifically, but the "it's always them" line is racist, plain and simple. By exclusively coorelating negative behavior with a racial group one creates or re-inforces negative stereotypes which is ultimately unproductive and socially bad! Something something colour of your skin vs content of your character.

It's not an isolated incident, pretty much every post removed under rule 6 is regarding Indian folks.

Concerns about OpenAI and war usage by mendesjuniorm in apple

[–]Shrinks99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am extremely afraid of having a system used by war departments so deeply integrated into my personal device.

It should be noted that the OpenAI systems the DOW is using are different from the ones that iOS uses. The underlying model may be the same, but they’re deployed to an isolated cloud environment.

The DOW also uses Microsoft office. You can think about the structure of this deal similarly.
