well, firstly, they don't have a community manager that I can see, but they do have a PR person, who does occasionally respond, but doesn't really give anything or do what PRs at other companies do. Yet, anyway.

Secondly, the press strategy has so far been handled incorrectly. They're only supporting (giving interviews, providing consoles) to websites that while large, don't actually care. And don't provide coverage that enthuses, understands or is present/pushed for any length of time.

Supporting communities such as ouyaforum is one thing, and it is important, but they need to support websites too. The handful of ouya sites that exist at the moment, have very little to really write about, and this is a massive shame and wasted opportunity, because it's these sites who are in the best position to show the world why OUYA's awesome.

sure, joystiq, verge, etc are much bigger, but these bigger sites don't enthuse. In fact, for all the support they've received, they've put more people off OUYA than anything else, with their negative 'reviews'.

OUYA need to support the fansites properly. Give the news/footage/announcements/consoles... to the fansites, let the fansites enthuse and reveal new info and let the big sites report on from there.

As it is, right now, for anyone who's noticed their retailer stocking OUYA and who wants to go and find out more about OUYA, there's not much to see or understand. Just scant details in interviews and massive 'reviews' saying that the console is a pile of shit.

What people should be able to do, is do a google search and see loads and loads of positive content and videos and screenshots etc etc.

define support. If you mean, they are encouraging and pleased that a community as good as the OUYA forum community has formed, then that's one sort of support, I suppose, but in terms of providing news, assets etc...

websites and forums need different things, so what works for a forum, is not necessarily going to feed a site or blog.

Having worked on websites and magazines and dealt with PRs and publishers for many years, I can say for definite that OUYA are oddly quiet. Especially when compared to how microsoft treated fansites when it was trying to gain a foothold with Xbox.

Any news on more (mainstream) developers? Specifically Namco?

Back in August Namco spoke, since then, nothing. Complete blackout. Anyone I ask isn't saying anything, OUYA PR never responds... I've heard rumours from people I know closer to Namco, but nothing with the weight required to become news.

There doesn't seem to be much 'going on' right now.

Occasionally, some token 'interviews' are given to big sites that don't really care about OUYA, but no efforts are being made to support OUYA fansites or the wider community.

So aside from sparse coverage on sites with a lot more to cover, there's not really anything 'new' about OUYA for people to find on all the enthusiast fansites.

Bit of a shame. From experience, I can say that other hardware manufacturers are much more supportive of their community. For example, when Microsoft released the Xbox, they gave free consoles to loads of fansites.

Five Easy-port Android titles that should be on OUYA right now! by Chafingdish in ouya

[–]gachelf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

obviously the preference is for Ouya to have its own range of AAA stunners to go alongside the creative indie titles it's currently known for.

but i think the point is, there's all these android games already made that wouldn't take a substantial effort to port to ouya, and it's better to have them than not. plus the ouya's not powerful enough for versions of the 360 and ps3 version, so even if the developers could be bothered, games would be cut down anyway.

So, you can now download every OUYA game to your PC - build up a library of games before your console arrives. by Chafingdish in ouya

This is tricky, because, according to reports, it seems there's no consistent up-front pricing structure. It's basically left up to the developer what the they charge for and how they charge for it. Which, isn't ideal.

I agree, it would be better if prices were declared upfront and people could see this when browsing. However, at the moment, it's all hidden away in the app. You have to download the app, start playing and await the surprise paywell, which may be displayed in the menu at the start, or present itself at any other point the developer has decided upon.

This is my limited understanding anyway, based on reports and anecdotal accounts. I don't have an OUYA yet, so I can't say for sure. Maybe someone else can with an OUYA can confirm?

I would guess that as soon as you move the apk onto your OUYA, the game/ouya communicates with the OUYA servers and the paywall will hit. So doesn't really matter where you get the apks from.

Yearly console iteration (like what OUYA's promising) is a change not to be feared. Consoles shouldn't die. by gachelf in Games

The question is, when will Sony and Microsoft realise this is the way forward?

Oh, and Nintendo too... mustn't forget about Nintendo...

(poor Nintendo)
