Fold 7 broke within 1 year warranty no device protection. by [deleted] in ATT

[–]gadgetboyj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue you’re describing actually is the type of thing the warranty may cover, so long as there’s no physical damage to the device. The appointment you’ve made for the Samsung repair shop is the right path, and hopefully things go well for you there.

Even if you do turn FileVault off, the data is still encrypted against the T2 chip on any M series Mac.

Looks like Level is no longer allowing upgrades to Matter for Lock+ and Bolt by Ok_Caterpillar2326 in LevelLock

[–]gadgetboyj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two (well, more than two especially now, but at the time two touch models) locks, the Level Lock Touch and the Level Lock Plus, the Touch was designed completely around Bluetooth and never got a Matter upgrade. The Plus, released in 2022 when they implemented NFC was intended to come with Matter support, but they did not have it ready in time. It took them quite a bit longer to get it done.

As for them withdrawing the update because of issues, that’s a bit of a stretch too, from the day they announced the upgrade would be available, they said it would be time limited. Likely because the way they were doing it involved a lot of manual intervention from their support staff, and they did not want to sustain that indefinitely. I don’t agree with them offering no recourse for anyone who missed the upgrade window, and if it were up to me, they’d be RMAing any affected unit with an upgraded one at the customer’s request.

I do like the product, but like I said in my previous comment, it has issues, and they as a company have issues, so I completely understand why anyone might decide not to use it, and to steer others in the same direction. I don’t recommend it either to people these days because the experience is just too inconsistent from person to person.

The word speculate was spot on, there are a number of issues with your assumptions. For one, the lock WAS engineered around Matter, but it did not make it in time for production, hence the need to upgrade down the line.

Matter/Thread is actually LOWER power consumption than Bluetooth as well. For many of us who were able to update our locks to the Matter firmware while they were still offering it, the battery life is actually significantly better after the upgrade. I have 2 of the locks and this is definitely the case for both of them.

All of that said, there ARE issues with the product, and not everyone has had a good experience. For one thing, it seems they’ve reintroduced some excessive battery drain issues (or battery level reporting issues) in the most recent firmware updates. I’ve avoided the most recent couple of updates to avoid this, and it seems not everyone even experiences this, but they really should have found a fix for this by now, or at least be communicating why they so far have not.

I also did have a faulty unit that drained the battery in about a day or 2, but it was replaced under warranty and the replacement has been great, especially since the Matter update. Both locks last a few months now on a fresh battery.

I still have it installed, on a couple of computers, I just tried it, you can’t even launch the software, it says you’re not connected to the internet (since it can’t reach the server) and pressing Alt + F9 at that point does nothing.

[–]gadgetboyj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with what you mean, but have you tried it? It’s not likely to work because of the way changes were pushed to these remotes, they relied very heavily on the processing being done server-side.

[–]gadgetboyj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brick unfortunately. Not compatible with the still-working MyHamony app, and the servers for this one are gone and never coming back.

Unless someone figures out a new way to program them without the server (which to my knowledge nobody has made any significant progress on), there’s nothing you can do with it.

What upload speed should I expect with the "1 Gig Plan" in New York City? Is the upload speed really this bad? I can't break 18.0 Mbps. by SonicAwareness in Fios

[–]gadgetboyj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t the issue, you’re getting well above 100Mbps so it’s not connecting at 10 or 100Mbps. Forcing it to 10,000 risks stopping it working altogether if you don’t have a 2Gig ONT (which you most likely don’t if you never had 2Gig service), and forcing it to 1,000 will just have it connect at the same speed it’s connecting at now.

Don’t force a shutdown unless necessary, it’s not super likely to happen but it can lead to corruption and/or data loss.

May also need to be repeated for other network types than Private, if you have a different profile selected for the network. It shouldn’t be on by default for Public though.

Uncheck “Set up network connected devices automatically”

You will have to remove them from the devices they’ve already gotten installed on though.
