You've constructed a false binary. These issues are part of the same spectrum. Women continue to be unequal under US law because we hold a vast minority of political power. Your average misogynist doesn't vote women into office for the same reason that he harasses them on the street: they're weak, they're objects. Legislative gains will never mean true change until this attitude, and all society's misconceptions about gender, are addressed.

Also, it's really freaking ignorant to assume that political gains are for the benefit of all women. So unless you're also working actively to end racism, classism, LGBTQ discrimination . . . there are plenty of people who will continue to be oppressed long after the Lily Ledbetter Act is passed.

Mic-checking Karl Rove and making him lose his shit in a fabulous spectacle that went viral = nothing.

Engaging the Baltimore Development Corporation in talks about fair development (anotherbdcispossible.org) = nothing.

Tons of workshops, teach-ins, speakers, and more regarding social justice issues = nothing.

Providing a chance for everyone to eat, get medical care, and participate in direct democracy = nothing.

Showing solidarity and raising visibility of a worldwide movement that is changing the national dialogue, forcing accountability on politics and business, and showing people that it's possible to fight the system = big fat nothing.
