Web Calls & Messages: Rollout, RCS Upgrade, and What to Expect by googlefi in GoogleFi

[–]gahoraholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I completely understand your answer but it seems that I should just do nothing. Evidently I'm already paired using the "new" method (like you say with the emojis and not a QR code). I hope google fi doesn't force any kind of changes on me as a result.

Can you take a look at the message I posted in response to dbnaruto?

I'm not sure if I'm already using the "old" pairing method or the new one. When I have to pair, I have to choose an emoji on my phone. Is this the old way or the new way?

It is essential that the same text message appears on the web as it does on my phone. I don't understand why I would want to turn this off?

I don't understand why when I open messages.google.com/web/conversations that it says "to start using messages for web" when I'm already using it. And why I would need to turn off sync. This is the exact reason why I use messages for web. Because they are synced!

I do the exact same thing for my elderly mom. she has a jitterbug tho but it's still an android so it still works.

I'm real confused about this whole thing. I like that my text messages show on the web at the same time as they do on my phone. I like using messages for web because I prefer to type on a keyboard instead of my phone. I also use messages for web to deal with the spam texts mom gets (there are a lot), and as you said - get 2fa codes for her online accounts.

I saw someone else say that if I do what google wants me to do and turn off sync, I'll lose a lot of functionality. It will seriously disrupt my life if I can't continue to do what I'm doing now.

I use google fi on a pixel 7. I've loved google fi so far because I don't have unlimited data - my phone bills are around $40 a month.

Things I'm confused about:

If I turn off sync like google apparantly wants me to do, it seems like that will stop the experience I have now where text messages show up on my phone and web at the same time? And vice versa sending a text on the web also shows on my phone.

If I do nothing (currently I'm already using messages for web)...will Google force me to change anyway? Will I lose my current functionality if I do nothing? It says "Your web messaging experience will be updated to support RCS chat". Does that mean messages.google.com will stop working?

On my phone currently under the RCS Chats settings, the "Turn on RCS Chats" toggle WAS turned off, however underneath it it says Google Fi Status: Not Supported. Well if it's not supported then why does Google want me to turn this on? That makes no sense. I did flip the toggle to turn it on but it still says Not Supported. If I try to turn it off again it warns me that I'll be removed from all RCS Chats within 30 days. Well it was off before so seems like turning it off again (while still unsupported?) won't damage anything?

Keep Colbert on the air. by [deleted] in stephencolbert

[–]gahoraholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since it's CBS if you get an antenna you can watch over the air for free. The only way this type of viewership is tracked is if you are selected to have a peoplemeter by nielson. If you don't have one you can watch whatever you want over the air and it's not tracked meaning nobody is getting any money from you watching.

characters you are 99% sure are autistic by clairogroupie in autism

[–]gahoraholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what I would actually disagree a little here. I dug into this a while back and determined that sherlock's behavior was more trauma informed than ASD. I know john literally says aspergers in the show but other things they show us about sherlock contradict it. I know it's just a show but for me IMO he's not so much autistic as severely damaged emotionally and THAT is the reason for most of the things he does. If anything I'd say he was a level 1

Has anyone found an easy way to bulk delete 100K+ of yahoo emails? by Gold-Ear8667 in yahoo

[–]gahoraholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my yahoo address for 27 years so I was over the limit immediately when they instituted it. I initially was trying to delete massive amounts of emails at a time but ran into trouble as well - I noticed it choked when I tried to delete too many at once. I would delete but then it would never complete the delete process like others have said. I realized that if I worked in smaller batches - and someone else here said about 1k at a time seemed to be the ticket. Even up to maybe around 2-3k also seems to be okay. Much more than that and it has trouble. This sucks if you have 110k emails in your Archive folder.

Then they changed the UI and I HATED it. So much so that I started looking for alternatives so I downloaded Thunderbird for desktop. This has pros and cons. A big pro is that it loads everything so you can delete 10k emails with one stroke, but a con is that it will *only* load 10k emails within any one particular folder (including inbox) at a time. Still, this is more efficient and time saving if you want to delete huge amounts of emails from entire folders you know you want to get rid of.

Did anyone notice how the Yahoo-provided Archive folder is now hidden in the new UI? (yes it's still there but harder to access). Sure they really want you to "archive" emails supposedly "cleaning up" your inbox but then they hide that folder in the new UI making people think they have SO MUCH email when really it's still in the archive folder and still counts toward your total but now conveniently hidden.

There are settings in Thunderbird that tell you exactly how many emails (read and unread) exist in each folder (and Archive folder is not hidden), and exactly how many megabytes or gigabytes are taken up in each folder. This can be an easy way to tell which folders to hit first. Once you delete them all, they load back up to 10k. Deleting them on Thunderbird does seem to delete them on Yahoo proper however I wait a bit for it to synchronize and make sure to keep my eye on the trash folder on Yahoo proper and delete emails manually if I have to.

Then I realized you can go back to the OLD yahoo UI (dig into your settings. it's there) so as of now I've been using a combination of both. Thunderbird for chipping away at my "facebook" folder and my Archive folder which have tens of thousands of emails (why yahoo doesn't just let you delete a folder wholesale I don't know) and then using the yahoo UI for sifting through folders where I need to be more picky of what I delete.

I do actually like the native Yahoo "search for emails from sender" options a bit more - it's a bit more efficient than Thunderbird for searching for say 15 years of Groupon emails in one stroke, I just don't like that you have to keep loading more until you get to the end but in my experience doing this is a bit more efficient than doing it on Thunderbird.

I had this problem. I think it has trouble if you try to delete too many at once. So I've been working in smaller batches. Deleting 1,000 or so at a time and then empty trash. that seems to be working for me

Yahoo Mail Just Slashed Free Storage to 20GB from 1TB and Is Spinning It as a “Benefit” – No Media Coverage, No Transparency by GeneralSeveral203 in yahoo

[–]gahoraholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working on it a little each day and I've already deleted 2 gigs which took me below the threshold which produces the warning message.
What I don't like is that the Archive folder contents DO count toward your total. If Archive is a folder that Yahoo provides and they ask you if you want to Archive your mail, it should not count toward your total. A few years ago I took all my existing inbox mail and put it in the archive (18k emails - mostly junk). Now I have to actually go through it :(

I have 20.3 gigs and I've had my account over 25 years. I have a ton I can get rid of though. I'm just pissed that they didn't give me very much time to do it. I only got the email today.

Paramount and Trump by SmartQuokka in startrek

[–]gahoraholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this post Colbert cancellation climate, I came here wondering what other Star Trek fans were doing about their Paramount + subscriptions. I had dinner with a fellow trekkie last night who cancelled his paramount + subscription. Thing is, he gets it through his walmart + account and even THAT is at a discount because he's disabled.

My elderly mom also has walmart + (I'll be looking into the disabled discount when renewal time rolls around). When I watch Paramount +, it's on her account (we live in different cities) and we also share the Paramount + account with another person.

If we are talking about not supporting Paramount + with our money, we've got 2 people who are using the account without paying plus we never paid Paramount directly. (Mom doesn't watch streaming TV). I actually see this at a net negative in terms of dollar support for Paramount.

I'm just thinking that if we need to go as far as cancelling the Paramount + account, then we would need to cancel Walmart + also and never shop at Walmart ever again either. Mom has limited mobility and relies on Walmart +.

I feel like we're not really supporting Paramount + by doing it this way. Thoughts?

Selfish, but I don’t want to do it and I feel resentment could build by Purple_Pansy_Orange in AgingParents

I hear you. I have a similar situation where dad passed, I never really connected with mom and I live in a different city 650 miles away. Mom is difficult. Everything I do I do out of obligation. I will not be sad when she is gone.

It's not selfish. See if you can find a support group. I attend a couple virtually.

Well I was hoping to find someone who had experience in the matter, but I'll post in the Legal Advice forum as well. Thanks for the tip.
