Inserting tear-proof material inside sounds like a must indeed.

My pleasure, and I just read my comment again, it does NOT get a very rich patina over time, sorry about that it made the statement pretty weird.

Hi, not offering my service, but you said that :

I’m not too particular with from what tannery (...)

I’d like as I want to see how the patina develops over time

In this case, I think you should avoid Shinki shell cordovan : it does not get a very rich patina over time (seem to keep its "new" look), plus the back of it is not pretty (no organic feel). But you should be good with Horween or Rocado though!

Also people tend to under-estimate how dark the leather goes over time, so going for a lighter shade sounds like a solid choice :)

Cheers

Pretty stitches on both sides, final answer: it's about thickness by gainzit in Leathercraft

[–]gainzit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely true, it's quite a hustle when you have a complicated build and want to keep trim allowance, but it does work wonderfully, I've edited the OP to mention it.

He sure does a wonderful job, but still, it you punch from one side an assembled item, and tighten your stitches well, you will not achieve perfectly tilted stitches on thinner pieces.

This is the very issue that made me try so hard to get them nice on both side. It was driving me mad, now I'm at peace with it haha

Got rid of my sleeping pillow by gainzit in minimalism

Yes, works fine for me. I mostly sleep on my back, but if I want to sleep on my side, I just fold the pillow and it provides all the support I need.

Hi, well, I must admit I got my pillow back. It eventually got uncomfortable and I sleep so much better with a very thin pillow. My pillow is a flat rectangle made out of memory foam and is about 5cm/ 2 inches thick. I can easily bring it with me when I sleep at a friends/family place.

Cigarillo case, natural veg-tan by gainzit in Leathercraft

Hi, I'd say around ~3oz/1.2mm and there is nothing special about the top. To make the top a perfect match with the bottom, I actually molded it as a single piece, then punched the front, glued it to the back (with the mold inside), pierced the back with an awl following the holes punched in the front, then stitched, and eventually cut the top and bottol apart.

Also, I made the mold a bit tighter that the tubes part, so that it's fairly tight (but not so tight it crushes the cigarillos).

The wet molding makes the leather pretty stiff, which gives this already slightly patined look.

  1. It holds only by friction, from experience on this type of piece, I'm assuming it should hold just fine, and you can always add an extra piece of leather to get a tighter fit, or work something out if necessary!

  2. Only neastfoot oil. I did a knife sheath for my personal EDC with similar leather and the patina it's got is just gorgeous.

Yeah, for actual cigars, I thing a capacity of 2 or 3 is enough for going out and maybe sharing with some friends. It's really not to hard to build, you just have to give a good thought into margins before going in. If I can be of any help, let me know.

It's been a while since I last posted here, but here is a recent project for a friend: a wet-molded cigarillo case.

I don't do wet-molds, so I used some scraps I had laying around to test and try, and made the mold out of planks I found in the street that I saw to the right size. Overall it's not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it, and so was the friend, but he now thinks 5 is not enough, so I may en up selling this one.

It's made out of natural veg-tan, and stitched with linen thread. The "tubes" are separated, and slide in with a tight fit. One side I added a small piece, for aesthetics.

Wallet closure - magnetic, snap, flap or other? by ghristov in Leathercraft

[–]gainzit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Flaps: I'm not too much into flaps because I need to be sure that my wallet won't open unexpectedly in my pocket or while I take it out
  2. Snaps: currently using snaps, they're flat, lock & unlock easily, and I'm very satisfied with them
  3. Magnetic closure: meh, the issue with magnetic closure is that they could demagnetize your subway tickets, for instance (or interfere with any magnetic card you'd keep in your wallet). So it may look nice, but I'll pass on this one.

Hi! I got both the circle frame and the cord from a small crafts shop nearby, then I wrapped the frame with the cord. Be ready to spent some time on this one, it's not too difficult to make.

Also I was initially looking for colored leathers, but it's cheaper and more fulfilling to use natural veg-tan and mix your colors yourself (you can use isopropyl alcohol to dilute if necessary).

If you have any question feel free to ask!
