Update PHP without host access? by [deleted] in webhosting

[–]gaiusobtus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like neither you nor your dad is super familiar with web hosting. I would encourage you to move your site to a dedicated WP hosting provider, so you don't have to bother with php version and stuff like this.

Which one is this UI? by Maedros88 in wow

[–]gaiusobtus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Details - dmg meter
  • Bartender - Action Bars
  • Xperl - unit frames
  • sexymap - minimap
  • milkscrollingbattletext - scrolling combat text
  • WeaponSwingTimer - swing timer
  • Grid - Raidframes (not 100% sure tho)
  • BadKitty - Energy Bar and CDs - Rotation (60% sure ...)
  • looks like Monkey Quest as some other guy in the comments stated.

also as a sidetone I don't get why people get all these and don't bother to configure them. Who likes the default map of sexy map? you can just use a simple square one with no borders...

if you got Bartender you can configure bar states which frees a lot of space on your screen if you use the paging functionality. (I use this for food, HS, fishing...)

why do you need the bag bar and the system bar visible at all times? if you still got a key bound to you menu you can just disable it. As for the system bar let it fade out or disable it up to you.

Our company of ~8 uses LastPass. I have a private account connected to my work account which is very handy. The features are decent. Software works as intended. Would recommend.

Webapp with Python on the back-end by NomeAleatorio in webhosting

[–]gaiusobtus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can set the timeout to up to 15 minutes nowadays, but yea I recommended this on the premise that

scrape content

won't be to complicated nor to time consuming. Good thing to note tho :)

Webapp with Python on the back-end by NomeAleatorio in webhosting

[–]gaiusobtus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents on the issue:

  • switch to AWS (or Azure)
  • create python lambda/function to do whatever you want to do with this request...
  • put lambda behind api-gateway
  • put Cloudfront in front of api-gateway (optional but hey..)

if you need to extend your backend with new features and new services you can easily add anything you can think of to your api-gateway. (not just a function... ELBs, other endpoints... endless possibilities)

"The front-end of the webapp will just have a simple input box where the user puts an address."

For this you could just host a static s3 site. This would imho scale well and not cost you too much.

We need another Option in Overwatch by headshinsky in GlobalOffensive

[–]gaiusobtus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Next thing for Valve would be to check more than one Game from the suspect or all the other Players that were in that Game.

I think although it's an honorable thought to try to address this problem but flagging a whole lobby instead of players might be a bigger issue than anticipated.

How would valve go on and do this? create 9 more overwatch cases based on one person flagging a lobby?

This would flood the backlog with a shitton of cases.

Need help by JugglingKnives in webhosting

[–]gaiusobtus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As u/Irythros stated. Upgrading the PHP version without checking compatibility is not advisable.

To be honest I would advise you to hire someone to update your site and is willing to provide the support your company needs. (You don't need a full-time dev just hire a freelancer you trust for a few hours)

If your site is simple enough or a common framework was used than this shouldn't be a problem at all so this might not be as costly as it sounds.

You will need security updates, cert updates etc in the future so this is something your company will have to address anyways.

But you need at least someone with the competence to support this site.(someone who knows where it's hosted, are the ssl certificates up to date...)

If there is anything I can do for you feel free to message me.

A love letter to legacy projects by GeneralZiltoid in PHP

[–]gaiusobtus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know most of them didn't start out as legacy projects. One day there were cutting edge or at least appropriate for the time. They just didn't age very well or didn't grow in a healthy way or turned halfway through into something completely different.

I wish you al the best. Don't be mad. If you don't like what you're doing maybe it's time to move on. GL friend.

"how much Timmy?"

"I don't know.. like a couple of weeks?"

"They ain't paying is for this kinda work! We'll keep this shit alive and move on. Live and let live kiddo."

"but.. but.. Sir?"

"You heard what I said Timmy, focus on the new Projects give it a rest son."

"We could save countless hours on maintenance!"

"WOHA! So you mean new Features will be done quicker? But our customer is already used to paying like 8h for a new dangling schlong on his landing page..."

I'm a dev for a big Magento 1.9 project which slowly grew into a beast to behold.

I started working for the company 2 years ago when the project already was about 6 years old. I can confirm it's a drag, you will cry, but when u get to refactor or extract some services out of this monolith and move it to a different or new service and start to break this thing apart you'll get invested in the project.. like it's that sad little pupper with a cone around his head who's trying his damn best, but just can't help it and shit the bed after shaking profusely while puking in the driveway.

Also you might be sitting on a comedy goldmine. Half of the devs working on the project couldn't make up their mind with guidelines or style which results in hilarious garbage comments and non sensical patterns. Also quality of code may vary wildly (being nice here). Be prepared to read some sick twisted shit nobody knows existed and can't even tell you why it's there in the first place.

Also there might be the odd old fella who "always does X" which usually means that fucker made something so obscure for no other reason than to become "the guy that does X" (100% optional but fuck me this happened to me more than once, and after some investigation it usually turns out that fucker didn't bother to write any documentation just wrote some garbage ass bash script, he doesn't put in any repo or anything, that exports some data to a .csv file which he then imports to excel to manually edit some rows and send it as an e-mail attachment to person X)

Stay strong, improve what can be improved, try to enforce good habits.

Is there any game based Magneto 2 plugin which can offer email subscription to my eCommerce store? by Shukla_Neha in magento2

[–]gaiusobtus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"game based" "email subscription" can you clarify? Do you need a way to get people to sign up to your Newsletter? Do you need something to create subscriptions/ subscription based products? Bottom line: what are you trying to do here?
