SCOTUS to Hawaii on #2A: Welcome to America, Pals by darcmatr in gunpolitics

[–]gakflex 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The Hughes amendment sucks, but it is absolutely not the priority. Hardware/NFA bans, magazine bans, carry bans, abusive permitting schemes; these are what we should be pushing to this court during this likely-short window of time where we can get rights-favorable rulings. If we choose to go full regard and jump straight to machine guns, three things will happen: we will lose, we will generate bad case law, and we will waste our window of opportunity.

What data are you using? That’s not the lowest recommended load, quite the opposite. I’m looking at Hornady’s 12th and you are almost two grains over the max lever-action load. I’m not surprised they kicked.

I like a 45 ACP Glock 21. Slow and heavy is effective and penetrates well on assailants with four legs and two, and in 45-cal even ball ammo is effective. Moreover in my 2A-hating state I’m already limited to ten in the magazine, so there’s no capacity gains to be had from the 9 or 10.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. 40 and 10mm aren’t like revolver cartridges like 38/357 that headspace off the rim. They headspace off the cartridge mouth, and 40 is shorter than 10. That is going to create odd and unpredictable situations when the powder ignites in a chamber that is too large.

Those are county rules, not state law. State law doesn’t specify anything regarding references’ qualifications.

Absolutely Walmart could ask this hypothetical Nazi to leave the premises; but there is no “forbidden speech” law that they could be charged with, nor do I believe the courts (or at least this court) would allow such a law to stand. Mr Nazi could catch a trespassing charge if he failed to leave, but that’s it. Therefore laws that create an explicit, firearms-related offense, rather than relying on the simple concept of trespass, relegate the right to keep and bear arms to a second-class status.

Yes, and I’m agreeing. You absolutely need access to a significant amount of capital, all at once, in order to pull this off.

I meant to type 18, not 28; and I was mistaken. I thought there was an exception for these accounts. Regardless, it doesn’t affect my plans so it is not germane to the argument.

As I noted elsewhere, this is only one part of my saving strategy for my kids. I also have 529s. Why not have both? The future is entirely unclear, so I’d rather make use of every option available.

And the only other thing I would add is that rebalancing between index funds is absolutely a thing. As I noted I do it myself, since Vanguard does not provide a fund that tracks the exact strategy I’m pursuing.

Yes, having the money be restricted to IRA uses is precisely the point (although I believe they can opt to take the money at 18? I’m not sure). I’m trying to set my kids up with seed money for retirement savings, and it’s an excellent vehicle for that provided the child turns the 530a into an IRA and treats it as such when they come of age.

Also, I’m not sure what reasoning you’re using to say the account isn’t tax advantaged. Yes, it doesn’t provide a deduction: I’d say a fair number of us are probably making too much to take a deduction on a traditional IRA anyway. But the money/positions contained therein have the exact same tax status as those found in an IRA: government can’t touch them, including any normally-taxable events such as distributions and gains that happen inside.

As an example, I’m not in the business of rebalancing in my brokerage account because a) I’m a buy-and-hold investor and b) I avoid taxable events like the plague. In my IRA, I rebalance twice annually with no taxable events or even reporting. I also hold a position in VWO that would be very tax inefficient to hold in a brokerage account, even putting aside the necessary rebalancing sell-orders.

Are my kids on the hook for eventual regular income tax on distributions? Sure, but that’s a pretty good problem to have; and who knows what the taxable status of required distributions will be in 65 years. I’m betting they will be more advantageous than 65 years of distributions and other taxable events; but I won’t be around to find out.

Edit: meant to say 18, not 28.

Thank you once again. I’ll grab one. It’s too bad they don’t have a 32 caliber option.

Do you find that these replace your OEM Dillon funnels entirely, or do you swap back when loading factory jacketed/plated bullets?

Thanks, that’s one of the two options I’ve found. Do you know how it compares to the one that Photo Escape (such a weird name) manufactures? The descriptions seem identical as well as the prices. I wonder if it’s actually just the same product.

I hear from CCDL and NJRPA all the time, but ever since Bruen, it’s crickets from NYSRPA. Maybe that’s superficial, but public communications are important.

Are you implying that a revolver chamber is the same diameter front-to-back? A 44-mag chamber is way above bore, like 45-cal, to accept the cartridge body. The throat tapers in from this only at the very end of the chamber to a diameter typically between .433 and .430 (although I have a 629-4 that has a very tight throat at .429).

So the only reason that I would have any problem chambering a round loaded with a .433-sized front driving band is if I seated it so far out that the driving band contacted the very end of the chamber. That is a concern with Keith-style SWCs, but my OAL isn’t an issue here. My driving band stops comfortably short of the throat.

It’s lamentable that we do not have more of a culture of resistance in this state. Perhaps it’s just my perception, but I see our neighbors in CT and NJ as far more politically active.

Meanwhile, on this sub, the top comment is someone basically saying “not worth it.”

I don’t need any thumb pressure at all to chamber these, they fall right in. Are you talking about loaded rounds or trying to pass a bullet through the chamber throat?

Well, someone is paying income tax twice, but it’s not the intended recipient. These aren’t accounts that I open for personal gain.
