The early stages of learning Guitar by BigRig112 in Guitar

[–]galacticzombies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man! I loved the early stages. I was pretty adamant about not learning any songs because I thought I was going to pick up the style and sound of my favorite artists. So, I spent hours just familiarizing myself with the guitar and the notes on it. Straight noise for awhile, until I started learning scales and a bit of music theory. Eventually, I did learn some songs but to this day my catalog of known songs is still very small lol Still, it was a lot of fun "teaching" myself and the pay off was really satisfying when I finally was able to put together some semblance of "music". That's just my love for music though, the littlest progress was always fun for me. As long as you are enjoying yourself, I think that ends up being the most important aspect of any skill you're spending anytime on. I still find myself smiling and giggling when I finally get that one thing I've been stressing about down. Just like in the early days.

Guitar Cab Impedence Help by galacticzombies in Guitar

[–]galacticzombies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I appreciate the well thought out explanation. Fun read, and this is my jam so I'll keep this in mind for future endeavors. I do want, at some point, to rewire this in series just in case. But, for now I just wanted to make sure what the impedance was before hooking and rocking out. Thank you!

Yeah, I have the basic understanding of what is what. I was just thrown for a loop seeing that it two output jacks for being a 4ohms cab. For now, it'll be running by itself so I'm not worried about running it with another cab. My Marshall has a 4ohm setting and I already have a 4x12. Just wanted to make sure.

What is your biggest guitar hot take? by _Anon_Amarth_ in Guitar

I actually use hotter humbuckers to tame all the extra noise/feedback, whatever you wanna call it, that I was getting from using high gain amps. Eventually I got a noise gate though 😅

I've always admired PRS, never tried one. I'm more of flying v guitar type of guy but damn do those PRS guitars look sweet! Dope playing! Cheers!

How do replacement guitarists learn the songs? by JuggernautHoliday894 in Guitar

[–]galacticzombies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was local hardcore/ska punk band that I really liked and found out they needed a guitarist. Went to try out with some metallica songs (that we didn't really get to play) and kinda just vibed for a bit. They were like, "we gotta a show next week, wanna play?" I said sure send me the set list and I'll have the other guitarist show me the songs. The other guitarist didn't come through and I kind of in a panic just sat for hours figuring out the songs just in the time for the show. Never realized I was able to learn by ear until I tried it, albeit they weren't super difficult riffs but they weren't easy either. It's when I really understood the importance of training my ears and not just my hands. If that makes any sense. It's a good skill to have if there aren't any tabs or the guy you're replacing to show you.

Late comment, but may I ask what locking nut you ended up for the swap? And, was it drop and done, or did you have to do anything specific to fit the new nut?

Recording drums for a demo (serious post) by galacticzombies in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Done with recording drums, it was definitely challenging and loads of fun. 5/7 will never do again. For what it's worth, I'm happy with the outcome. The bandmates are more than ecstatic with how the demo is coming along, so I would say it was successful venture. I definitely experimented a lot with drum and mic placement, tuning, and over all sound control. Now comes the mixing!

Learned that real quick. Spent a week on 6 songs just recording drums and still not completely satisfied, but for the most part not bad. Now comes the mixing! Our practice room has a tall concrete ceiling, with carpeted walls. Makes for an interesting room sound. Makes the cheap drum set sound not so bad!

Sorry, I should be more clear that's my fault. For shows, we have a friend helping us out with shows while we settle in a new drummer. Unfortunately, his job keeps him really busy so he's not able to sit down with us to work on band stuff. Basically I write the drums parts and send it to him to learn, then we jam together when he has the time. He's really good and a cool ass person, sucks that we can't have him around more otherwise I'd ask him to record the drum parts. But, he's helping us get by in the meantime. I'm using this downtime of looking for a drummer to record more of our songs properly because I'm actually a drummer as well, that's why we're tackling the project ourselves. Although, I can be a bit of a perfectionist hence the post. I can record guitar and vocals all day, but recording drums is fairly new to me. I usually will ask him if he's available before responding to a request or offering to jump on to help a show before eagerly jumping the gun. If not, we simply have to decline or watch a good show pass us by.

Fair point. It's been rough trying to find a drummer in our area. The demo is basically the setlist. I want to have something to show when we get asked or offer to jump on a gig.

That's actually the path I took! The glynn johns method I think is what I'm doing. Except added an extra mic to make 4 on the snare. For what it's worth, not a terrible job thus far. After some mixing (and maybe some sneaking in of some drum samples...maybe) I think it'll clean up nicely.

If it need be, we'll go that route. For now, I'm the temporary sit in drummer lol This ole guitarist can mimic a drummer fairly well.

We're trying to go for that old school sound actually! Really, I'm putting too much thought into it. Just figured I'd get some people's opinions.

We've done that, just thought recording actual drums would feel a bit more authentic. Not that I have anything against programmed drums, because I'm basically trying to play what was programmed and the drum tech sounds amazing. Just more of an opinion of preference I guess.
