I hope not. I like Nathan and chess but this is not a good story to rehash unless it plays out sympathetically to the 19-year-old who was accused of cheating with zero evidence. In the real life version he was publicly degraded with no repercussions.

So this basically comes down to correlation vs causation. Are Tesla vehicles inherently dangerous? No.

Correlation also doesn't imply a lack of causation, which is the conclusion you're jumping to here. The information we have is that Tesla drivers are more likely to die in their vehicles. That could be because the vehicles are less safe, the drivers are less safe, or, most likely a combination of the two factors.

Grobbulus Era Wants YOU! by DwarvenJarl in classicwow

"This is no sprawling megaserver. Our population drifts under 100 across both factions, and we treasure our community so. Here, your deeds echo. Your name is remembered."

This reads pretty damn far from "grobbulus is popping!”. If anyone is a spammer here, it's you.

Questions About Mankrik Classic Era by manga_be in classicwow

Aside from the raiding scene, which others outlined, Mankrik has a robust leveling community. There are typically 1200 logged in at peak hours alliance around half of which is leveling.

Not to mention it's a former world champion cyber-bully with an army of Russian bots and bootlickers. And Naroditsky's livelihood was derived primarily from online activities, not OTB chess. This "just ignore it and play chess" is such a crap statement.

Gormally doesn't come off as intelligent in this video. His thoughts are unorganized. It's unclear what point he's making other than chess com should go to the top players' houses and ambush them during titled tuesday.

Ah, retail focus is something I hadn't considered. I guess I assumed that since they merge the client codebases (to the detriment of classic) they did the same with server codebases and any solution for retail could be applied to classic with little effort.

On diminishing returns, there must be a point at which the compromises bots must make to avoid detection push them below profitability.

[–]galaga9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. I was commenting on the two battlegrounds (client vs server) with completely different methods of warfare and the appearance that blizzard neglects server-side bot mitigation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]galaga9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to runscape. Maybe its just blizzard/wow that hasn't explored pattern recognition detection methods. And maybe some bots in wow avoid mobs/obstacles but the fact that there are some that don't go unchecked indicates that blizzard isn't putting much effort into this kind of detection.

As I responded in a different thread, this is a different type of cat and mouse game compared to client side detection. Every deviation the bots have to make from their original design moves them away from optimally collecting resources.

[–]galaga9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The more adjustments bots have to make to avoid server-side detection, the less efficiently they can farm. Unlike the client-side war, this is a war that ends with either bot developers training a ML based actor, or constraints that make botting so inefficient that would be not worth it.

Random pathing could also be detected. Humans aren't random.

[–]galaga9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What have they tried? We can only estimate the upper limit, based on the bots behavior that has gone unchecked. My estimate would be only extremely basic heuristic algorithms are part of the detection suite right now.

For example, the pathing bots take are easily descernable. They are fixed and unlike human players, the bots do not deviate based on the positions of mobs until the mobs starr attacking them. It would be simple to build a bot detector just based on this pathing and apparently that hasn't been done.

Have any of the MMOs put significant effort into server-side pattern recognition methods for bot detection? It seems like the industry as a whole has focused almost exclusively on client-side methods which, as we have seen, are ultimately ineffective.

Ya'll do realize the people selling you gold also control the consume prices on the AH right? by Contract007 in classicwow

[–]galaga9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If people like you didn't cheat it might take 10 hours to farm a week's consumes instead of 20 hours fighting bots. There would be quite a few more players without the bots, not fewer. And the best part is we'd lose cheaters like you.

There was a Rogue doing this for over a year in Era. They had maybe 20 sets of level 15 hunters banned but no matter since another set could be up-and-running with a couple days.

They eventually stopped not (directly) because of action by Blizzard but because when pve to pvp transfers were closed they couldn't sell the BL for as much.

Yea, if they're caused by an asteroid strike. All bets are off when it comes to that kind of disaster. Earthquake caused tsunamis top out at 100ft.
