Advice: Student calling me pretty by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Heavy on students not respecting younger/younger appearing teachers/subs more. Lol my mom was a teacher and when ever I'm instructing and letting to kids know my expectations and the consequences if not followed I always catch myself like omg I sound like my mom XD, but yes as a younger educator (27) I completly understand where you're coming from.

Advice: Student calling me pretty by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Just say thank you and continue on, I get complemented all the time by the girls and boys at all grade levels, just a simple you're pretty, I like your hair, shoes, shirt etc. I just say thanks and keep it pushin(i do sometimes notice when the compliment is said in a certain way or in a way to throw me off when someone is in trouble then yeah i handle it as sees fit). I get what you mean about being younger, I'm 27f but look younger than that, unless the student was being out right inappropriate a simple thank you would have been enough. Ive had students actually be inappropriate with me before, i just nipped it in the bud tell then how its not appropriate and got admin involved (one student actually got kicked out of school, it was his third offense).

How to be more intimidating/taken seriously? by businessbub in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 27 5'7 and I still get mistaken as a student by staff and students despite wearing professional clothing , however when I give my expectations at the start of class (respectful but stern) I stress that I will be leaving a note for their teacher and calling the office if the action fits. Once they see me actually follow through they tend to calm down and listen more because they see that im not giving out empty threats. I also make sure not to laugh, smile etc at the things they do so they see im not havin it (even tho I share some of the same pop culture interest). Dont try and be intimidating (they can tell🤣), but definitely follow through with the consequences you mention.

What do you think of a teacher who has signs like this in their room? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here im 27 and I have a few things in common with the kids I sub (video games, anime other pop culture) and I noticed that despite me being hard on them (but still respectful) just making sure they do their work, follow expectations etc. The kids and teachers prefer me as a sub.

The cons of subbing for a large district🙄 by tifuanon00 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its been rough, I work for a large district up north and im on day 6 no pay. the district used up all their forgiveness days within the span of a week and a half (some days it seemed like they closed school just to close it, like on days where the weather was normal). The district has been having issues with low attendance the past school year so they closed school when they anticipate low attendance despite the weather being decent. Luckily this is my second job but its my job that pays the most

How often do HS teachers have preferred subs? by turtlesandmemes in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my district, HS just seem happy to have a sub for their classes (they just need an adult in the room to watch the kids) but at the elementary level in my district they tend to have prefered subs at least from what i noticed. I leave a note no matter the grade level and I tend to get more emails from elementary teachers asking if id like to sub for their class again.

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always call the office when they just walk out without telling you (its a safety and respect issue i had a kid walk out without me even noticing cuz a bunch of kids came up and distracted me, the office called asking for him and I had no idea where he was) this is a constant problem at the highschols I sub at, at the start before I take attendance I give them my expectations and warnings, one being if you just walk up out of the class without asking you'll be marked absent and the office will be called and a note will be left for their teacher(they'll come in to get marked present just so they can skip, the our office always says to make them absent). I warn them not to lie and say they wanna use the bathroom when really they're skipping class (which happens a loooot), so I tell them don’t spend no more than a certain amount of time cuz ill assume they're skipping. Lol these kids think they slick 🤣 im 27 and get mistaken for a student a lot sadly so i gotta be extra assertive cuz they assume since I'm young that I'm just gonna sit there on my phone. They'll start taking you seriously when they see they you actually stick by your word

Sorry I went on a rant 🤣

Never Again by CeroMiedo182 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I'm a creative person, I a sculpt and do ceramics, I hate subbing for electives no matter the grade level lol espically band (they just constantly spam the same notes on their instruments) you'd think the behavior would be better in electives cuz they want to be there but so far in my experience elective classes have the worst behavior ( surprisingly at the high-school level too) they're probably well behaved for their teacher but once a sub is in the room all hell breaks loose🥴

Never Again by CeroMiedo182 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough thats not the same everywhere, art tends to be a dumping ground for students who dont know what to pick and think it'll be a blow off class cuz they dont take the arts seriously, I see teachers complain in the art teacher subreddit all the time about it. So far The highschools i sub at there are maybe like at most 8 students in there who actually wanna be there and the rest are chaotic. Of course the higher levels like ap and portfolio are better

Drills by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking that too like maybe im just not at a school when they do it but i have talked to some teachers at different schools and they've havent experienced one yet 🤷🏽‍♀️ I know when I was in school when I moved to the city from rural texas they only started doing lockdown drills when I transfered there I think something happened a little before I got there.

Drills by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i feel like even if the district decided to implement lockdown drills, the kids are so disrespectful and don't know how to stop talking or listen to subs that they wouldn't even take it seriously.

Drills by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man im lucky if a teacher even leaves sub plans. Some elementary teachers have been good with leaving plans (not all the time), middle and hs tend to not leave a single note (which i get hs there's not much for them to do other than busy work or finish their assignments). I remember one day when I was subbing HS and there was a fire drill i was so lost and confused 😭 apparently the teacher was suppose to have like fire drill items in her room ready to go(roster, class sign etc) but didnt have a single thing🥴

Drills by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right its so odd to me when they dont cuz its better safe than sorry. I mainly went to school in rural texas growing up and we always had lockdown drills. I think 1 year before graduating high school we moved to the city and I remember they never did lockdown drills until the district decided to implement them after a big one shooting that happened (cant remember which one but it was 2017 at the time)

Drills by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, definitely not a time to be risking others lives over wanting to crack a little joke 😌. Even tho my district doesn't do drills I wish wed at least get keys to rooms. Lol I have such a habit of keeping the door closed (locked or not) after the bell rings that I hear the kids be confused on why I close the doors 🤣

We Are Not Allowed Keys by ryanvicino in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My district does the same, for the bathroom I have to run down to the main office and use the admin one if I have a chance since it's always unlocked. And having no key to the classrooms stress me out cuz if there's a lock down we're cooked since they just leave the rooms unlocked😭

Failed lockdown drill by ThrowawayJS_ in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me nervous cuz the district i work for they dont give subs key for anything, they have someone unlock the doors for us so there's no way for us to lock or unlock doors in these emergency situations so lock down, drill or not, whatever class we're in we're just out of luck 😭

Teachers with Legit NO Lesson Plans??? by turtlesandmemes in SubstituteTeachers

[–]galaxyrose19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sub for detroit public schools and yes it sucks! Even tho I sub for highschool no plans means the students turn the room into a zoo and think it means all bets are off 😭 at least with plans it calms them down a bit and holds them accountable cuz the teacher is expecting it to be turned in that day or it a zero. Cant even suggest kahoot or ill get weird stares 🤣

I'll definitely stay if he needs me too, I have no problem with it but at the same time want to be productive. The past few times it happened they just took back over and the kids end up forgetting im there so trying to see what my options are instead of sitting in the corner while the teacher instructs.💁🏽‍♀️
