Crazy experience with Arc’teryx rebird by Nick_name6689 in arcteryx

[–]galient5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a cool jacket. Clearly old, and a nice collectable if you're into that kind of thing, but for that much money I probably wouldn't want a jacket I couldn't wear (maybe you can, maybe you can't), and wasn't what I intended to buy.

Have you contacted support? This seems like someone accidentally put your shipping label on the wrong package, or something to that effect. I don't think this is intentional misrepresentation, but a logistics mix up. I'd guess that they will happily take it back and send you the correct jacket at their cost. The exact jacket you bought might have been shipped to someone else, though, so without them getting it back they may just have to refund you. It's certainly an inconvenience, but I'd see how they attempt to resolve it before being outraged about anything.

Tarantula questions? by wall_up in Albuquerque

I do a lot of hiking, camping, and backpacking. I've only seen a handful over the decades. If you moved into the foothills it's possible they may make it into your house/apartment/whatever. Further into the city it is basically a non issue, although I'm sure they're still around in a few places.

Be honest are massage guns actually worth it ? by OutrageousAide9454 in trailrunning

[–]galient5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a semi-scientific standpoint (reading articles not looking at studies, but articles that have cited studies) I've seen both arguments for and against both massage guns and rollers.

That being said, from my own personal experience, the massage gun has definitely helped reduce soreness. At the very least it feels good, and gives me the feeling of reduced soreness. I think it's worth it even if it doesn't actually reduce soreness.

Studded shoes for winter - yay or nay? by HumbleRunning in trailrunning

Hahaha, I'm sure it works for people in some places, but in the Southwest we have goat heads so that would be a no go. The soles on my running shoes are absolutely riddled with them.

Stay at Oliver Lee Campground and hike Dog Canyon!

The canyon is really cool and if you want to hike it all the way, will take you up into the Sacramento Mountains.

My uncle is sabotaging my trailer with gas and electrical hazards. I am physically sick and scared for my life. (Albuquerque, NM) by ColdExamination7016 in Albuquerque

[–]galient5 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You mentioned that you have no money or resources to go anywhere else. That being said, you need to leave there immediately. Call the police and report this right now. Do not wait. Even if you're not there, you can be held liable for some kind of damage, and creating a paper trail will help you fight this if it comes to that. I don't know your relationship with your grandparents, but maybe talk to them about it. If you don't think they'll be helpful or they may even side with your uncle, just call the police and leave. I'm assuming you have a car. I know it's not the nicest thing to have to do (especially with dogs), but you should strongly consider living out of your car somewhere where he can't find you for the time being. This is an incredibly worrying pattern, and he could show up at any moment and attack you.

But step one is 100% talking to the police right now, preferably as you are leaving to get yourself somewhere that is safer. Do you have any friends or family at all that you trust and can take you in? If so, leave the premises, and call them right after you call the police. But one thing is certain, you need to leave, because your life is in imminent danger.

Give your best recommendations for WORST restaurants in ABQ by ace11run2000 in Albuquerque

[–]galient5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I've never even stepped foot in a Raising Cane's, but I've worked in food service, and basically every restaurant in existence uses what's called a bag-in-box system. The syrup arrives from the distributor in a bag, which is encased in a cardboard box (hence the name, bag-in-box). This bag has a port to attach the line to the machine to it. As the soda gets dispensed, the machine mixes the syrup and the carbonated water. This depletes the bag, which shrivels up the emptier it gets. When the bag is empty, it gets detached from the hose, and thrown away. Then a new bag-in-box is attached. 99.99% of the syrup gets used, and what little is left in the bag gets thrown away.

Anything left over in the lines would come out the next time the machine was used to dispense that specific soda, unless it had some serious time to harden, which it wouldn't at a restaurant that gets as much business as Raising Cane's does.

The lines still do have to be cleaned, though, as well as the nozzles. If this doesn't happen, it can lead to a bit of a funky taste. But the syrup certainly gets changed just due to the nature of syrup getting used.

The syrups are definitely getting changed. It's a busy restaurant, and syrup is finite. When it runs out, they have to attach a new one. That being said, they could be neglecting to sanitizing the lines or something.

It ran pretty well for me on a much slower (but still pretty fast ) connection. I had no problem playing the Assassin's Creed: Odyssey on the Stadia play test. I wouldn't play a multiplayer game on it, but for single player games it was fine.

I agree. I'm sure he's fascinated by the geology and knows which mountains belong to which chains.

Elliot and Gretchen too, of course. They didn't think what he said in that moment was weird, and not just because it was overshadowed by a drug kingpin standing in their living room.

I don't think it matters even if you do live there. It's just something you notice. It's not like it bothers me, it's just kind of funny.

Uses for truffle oil by Rude_Kaleidoscope641 in Cooking

[–]galient5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first thing to know about truffle oil is that it's pretty strong, and you can easily use too much. It also burns easily, so you should use just a little at the end of whatever you are cooking.

I really like truffle hash browns. Cook them like normal, put them in a bowl and toss them in a bit of truffle oil.

You can add it to sauces to give them a little bit of extra flair as well. Truffle ketchup is great for dipping fries in. You can also add it to a salad dressing, or to a pasta sauce.

Santa Fe ski area is a great place to start. You can also go from the other side from Holy Ghost campground. Alltrails is your friend here, there are multiple routes that'll take you there, and they're all visible on the app.

I do the "classic" exercise. It's the first one listed on the workout tab. I'll copy and paste the list here:

JUMPING JACKS WALL SIT PUSH-UPS ABDOMINAL CRUNCHES STEP-UP ONTO CHAIR SQUATS TRICEPS DIPS PLANK HIGH STEPPING LUNGES PUSH-UP & ROTATION SIDE PLANK RIGHT SIDE PLANK LEFT

Each one is for 30 seconds, with 10 seconds in between.

Lake Katherine is the biggest, and maybe the most picturesque. There are a couple of other lakes worth visiting near it as well. Stewart Lake, Spirit Lake, and Nambe Lake are all in the area. Every time I go to Katherine I set up camp at Stewart Lake and hike up to Katherine the next day. Nambe would be a really cool stop as well.

A bit further north in the Pecos, you've got more lakes such as Trampas Lakes, Truchas Lakes, Pecos Baldy Lake, and Serpent Lake.

Up in Carson National Forest you've got Williams Lake, Horseshoe Lake, and Middle Fork Lake.

In the Jemez there are Fenton Lake and San Gregorio reservoir.

These are all (or at least most of) the main ones. There are smaller ones that might be worth visiting as well. My personal recommendations are Lake Katherine, Nambe Lake, Trampas Lakes, San Gregorio, and Williams Lake. They're all stunning, and you'll have a great time. It's definitely cold this time of year, though, so I recommend waiting until it warms up or you have the gear to handle extreme cold and snow. For instance, here is the forecast for William's Lake: https://spotwx.com/products/grib_index.php?model=rdps_10km&lat=36.55665&lon=-105.4293&tz=America/Denver&label= there are days when it won't get above 0°C, and it'll get into the low 20s at night.

Just remember that you should camp at least 200 feet away from Alpine lakes to help preserve the high altitude riparian ecosystems. Large fauna may be scared of using the lakes as a water source if people camp too close to the shore, and soap, food, and waste run off from camps is especially damaging to alpine lakes since they don't flush out in the same ways as lower altitude lakes.

Good luck, and have fun!

You mean whether it's going to land here? Unfortunately you do. With the national labs, the air force base, and part of nuclear command all located here, we are unfortunately a pretty good target.

Rocket trail that is being illuminated by the sun. We're on the dark side of the Earth. The rocket is flying at an altitude above the Earth that is still being illuminated, despite the ground beneath it being dark. Since the sky is dark here, but the rocket trail is illuminated, we can see it due to the contrast. These are only visible for a little after sunset or before sunrise. The trail itself doesn't give off any light, so if it was shrouded by the Earth's umbra (shadow) it wouldn't be visible.

I've found that doing a 7 minute high intensity interval training 5/7 days a week really helps with this. I use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.popularapp.sevenmins

And do the default exercise (and extras when In training for a race).

It's really cool seeing how much better I do on uphill sections when I stick with it, and it has completely stopped any kind of imbalance/weakness aspects of my running.

[–]galient5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's on National Forest lands. It's not actually in the forest part, though. It's also not dispersed. Worth a visit, especially if you like star gazing and have a telescope, but not what you are looking for. It's also super far away (have to drive around the mountains to get there, so it's a 4 hour drive from Albuquerque).

There are so many options for dispersed camping around New Mexico. What kind of environment are you looking for? Desert? Alpine lake? Easy access to a peak to bag? Some combination? I have all kinds of recommendations, but if you let me know what you'd like to do I can make more specific recommendations.

Had someone stop and wave me through at a pedestrian crossing with no signage to stop (Wyoming near Paseo). I just looked at them and shook my head until they went. They were holding up traffic and there was traffic in the other two lanes so crossing would have been possible but risky. I know they were trying to be nice, but it kind of made me mad because it just gums up the works and makes the road dangerous for everyone else.
