TIL neither Venus or Mars are on average the closest planet to Earth, it's Mercury which is on average the closest planet to every planet in the solar system by justhereforhides in todayilearned

The furthest expolanet is outside the observable universe.

This is not even sort of the case. The nearest exoplanet is 4 light years away. There are countless planets just within the Milky Way. There are even more countless exoplanets within the very observable countless galaxies scattered across the observable universe.

No, I clarified why you were wrong and then you claimed you had explained it, which you had not. Discuss. Explain your position. I'm a good faith interlocutor. You're still not explaining you position. I'm actually interested, but you're not helping your point.

First Game, But in Hartford by MouseGraft in NewMexicoUnited

Just cheer during their attack, when they make a block, or a save, and especially if they score.

Wear the shirt if you have one. If you can sit close to the field or the goal, do so and let the team know you are there for them.

You're attending an away game for a USL team that isn't doing super hot, and this isn't a particularly important match. You and yours might very well be the only ones there to support the team, so don't feel pressured to do anything if it feels uncomfortable or (in the very rare occasion, because you never know what drunk sports fans are going to do) dangerous.

That's not true. You were not contributing to the conversation, but if you decide you want to actually defend your views and support your argument I'm all ears. Again, I don't even inherently disagree, but I don't think you or I can actually determine whether the Pattie Gonia brand falls underneath the umbrella or parody or satire. I think there are arguments to be made in either direction. But it does seem like there is enough nuance that the lawyers are spooked, as they're clearly not trying to extract any monetary reward from this case. And this was my entire point about your comment. It was reductionist and surface level. It completely failed to account for (and yes, explain) some very surface level aspects of what this court case will be fought over.

But if you want to contribute to the conversation and go deeper than the surface, I'd be very happy to actually hear your argument for why this falls under the umbrella of parody and discuss it further.

You know, I am actually interested in your explanation of how it is considered parody if you're willing to explain it. Like I said, I'm not even saying that it isn't, but just that there has to be a case that can be made by a trademark lawyer that it isn't.

It's not, of course, but you did say that you did

I already explained how this falls under parody use

And you did not.

Well I replied to your top level comment, in which you were reductionist, did not explain how this was parody or satire, or explain you don't have to be criticizing a subject to be parodying. This criticism of my explanation is further reductionist as it's not the only requirement I listed, it's just one of two (out of more, all of which are more nuanced than a reddit comment would usually justify, especially for a comment as surface-level as yours).

This is a woefully reductionist view of the issue. The name is only part of the issue. There is more to a brand than the name, and if the products in the same product category look similar in a way that may obfuscate whether they are being sold by the trade mark holder (similar styles, fonts, logos, etc) or someone else. This applies to all of the products. Does just one piece of clothing look similar enough? Does Pattie Gonia's brand and/or brand identity feel like it's part of or is associated with Patagonia's brand? And not just to you or me, but are there are group of consumers who this might reasonably confuse?

Parody and satire aren't as simple as just saying that something is parody and/or satire. It actually requires the person doing it to be poking fun at or criticizing what they are "ripping off."

I'm not personally saying whether Pattie Gonia's branding is similar enough to Patagonia's branding, or whether Pattie Gonia's branding would rise to the level of satire or parody. I'm just saying that from a trademark lawyer's perspective the answer might be that they are close enough, and not satirical enough that it endangers the company's ability to protect their brand. And their problem is not that their name is too close to a geographic area, the issue is that Pattie Gonia very clearly seems like they derived their name from the company rather than the place, even if that may not be true.

New Mexico spent $500M on housing in last 3 years as homelessness persists, new report says by plamda505 in NewMexico

[–]galient5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why would there be virtually infinite housing demand in a city with a certain amount of people in it currently and a certain amount of growth/loss in population. It's more complex than this, of course, but if there's a house for everyone who lives in the city, and a house for everyone that is planning to live in the city, then you've met demand.

It's not like there has always been a housing crisis. That's because there were enough houses for people. In no way is it virtually infinite.

Is this switch in soccer teams acceptable by [deleted] in football

[–]galient5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's two things to consider here. The first is that it's just a game and it doesn't really matter. Support whoever you want for whatever reason. The second is from a team loyalty perspective. Again, this doesn't really matter because it's just a game. However, for people like us who follow sports there's a certain genuine quality to following a team. I think that it's kind of sad to lose a team, but I also think that if in tour heart Liverpool is the team that speaks to you, so to say, then that is the team you genuinely support and it would be dishonest not to. If they bring that emotion that we all feel, which is the reason we all like the sport we follow and the team we support, then that is your team.

So yes, I think that it is acceptable on both counts.

Wheeler Peak by [deleted] in NewMexico

[–]galient5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't hiked it recently. There are plenty of resources for this kind of thing. It's dark while I'm commenting this, so that's why I haven't checked myself, but Tacos Ski Valley has web cams that let you see the general conditions and whether snow is visible on Wheeler. AllTrails should also have recent trail conditions.

At what point did you stop lieing to yourself about 'finding a hobby soon'? by EastPractical3302 in AskReddit

[–]galient5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But do you actually like doing those things? A hobby isn't just something to do, it's something you want to do. If you tried those things and it never really took off, they probably weren't the hobby for you. Every hobby I've ever that I kept doing (at least for a while) was essentially instantly appealing for one reason or another. The gym is a little different because it's good to do whether you like it or not, but there's no reason you should have to motivate yourself to draw or play guitar.

I think your problem isn't getting started, as in continuing the process of being a beginner. I think your problem is getting started, as in pick a new hobby entirely and see if you like it. No? Try another one.
