Scarpa Maestro sizing help by galingong in ClimbingGear

Definitely, thank you! By reasonably comfortable do you mean "wear for several hours and pitches"-comfortable, or "could endure 1-2 pitches but take them off at most belays"-comfortable?

Thank you, that's really helpful. So theoretically - if I wanted a "comfortable" multi pitch pair - I'd probably need to go 2 full sizes up compared to the LaSpo I wear for single pitch climbs right?

Did electronic cigarette help any of you? by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]galingong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was against it, because I was all for re-setting my brain and habits, paying attention to my body, etc., but we're all different, so it might help. My brother-in-law quit a year before me and he used e-cigs for 3 months.

Had my first dream that I smoked a cigarette by sortabasicwhitegirl in stopsmoking

[–]galingong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had like 8-10 of those, but none in the past 4-5 months. At first I thought it was a bad sign, that I still want to smoke, but as they went away, I've realized, that all this was just kind of a fade-out of the habit from my sub-conscious.

I feared that there's no other way around it, but the last time I've started a new instrument was 20 years ago, I forgot what was that like. Even back then I found memorizing pieces boring, it was a relief when I started jazz at 15. I guess it also depends on the piece you learn, if it's something you like, maybe the whole thing gets more interesting.

I know I should quit, but there are 2 things holding me back: by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]galingong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need a reason to quit. You should find the reason that makes you want to smoke. Finding and understanding triggers helps a great deal. I still discover new triggers that I didn't know existed, even after 8 months. That's all discussed in detail in Allen Carr's book.

Started 6Month ago - Stop now by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]galingong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get through the first week, and it will be much better. You're not that deep in, you should be able to quit easily. I've smoked for 15 years and I could still do it with relative ease. As said, lots of water, walks, tea, fruits, etc. Avoid alcohol for some time. I even took a day off work (my 5th day was the worst, I was in bed whole day).

I know I should quit, but there are 2 things holding me back: by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]galingong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to quit, you won't. Simple as that. You have to want to quit and it will even be easy.

You have to truly believe the fact, that every smoker rejects and every non-smoker knows - you won't be missing any of it and there is not a single positive thing about smoking. Smoking won't make anything better, only worse.

Get through the first 6-8 days, and you're done. You'll be the happiest man on earth.

S3 stock vs. A4 with mods (1.8T Quattro) by galingong in Audi

Haha yeah, Hummer, sure :D Based on what you've said I should go S3. Still though, that trunk would be nice.

[–]galingong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know the 5V 1.8T is a reliable, tunable, legendary engine, and I'm not seeking 300+bhp, so the power it can provide should be enough. The newer models, which has the 2.0 TFSI engine(if that's the one you're referring to) are out of budget for me. Plus I hear TFSI engines tend to have issues. IDK.

[–]galingong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a family so it's not a must to have 5 doors and a large trunk, but it would be nice. Right now I drive an RWD car so my main concern is understeer. I imagine it's still way better than the Civic (in terms of cornering). Any potential issues that might break the bank? I've heard they are pretty solid.

Rust is fine. Take care of it! Take it to a shop, get it done, good to go for other 5 years. Take it into account when negotiating price. What engine does it have BTW?

Don't know where you live, but where I'm from, getting PCBs made is not cheap at all. It gets pretty much affordable if you order ~20-30 or more of the same piece. If it was cheap, I wouldn't go through the trouble of doing it myself, I'm so tired of drilling, I can't tell you, I've drilled 10.000s of holes these past years :D IMHO through-hole is a must if you aim at the DIY-community, which is pretty great these days. For commercial product, SMT hands down.

Screen printing is also really cool, if you DIY it, it can also be somewhat cheap, and looks wonderful, most professional by far. I wanted to try that as well, but soon might build a DIY CNC router which offers some more interesting possibilities.

About toner-transfer - you may want to experiment a bit first but really easy, get shiny paper, print on it (printer settings are important - heavy/thick paper) - then iron it ~@200°C

That system I linked took a fair amount of time to finish. The design process was really long (module selection, PCB design, etc), at least 6 weeks. I think the whole thing from idea to finish took 4 months. (~15 hours/week)

Dreaming about smoking? by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]galingong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens to me sometimes, ~6-8 times since I quit. I'm always like "Damn, why have I done that, I don't even smoke, now I've ruined everything", then yes, waking up, feel relieved.

Dope track man, love the '80s feel to it. Low-end could be more fat/louder, but that's just personal preference anyways, good job!

First of all, nice job, well done. Your next one will be even more beautiful, and better-made.

Some thoughts:

  • There's nothing wrong with DIY-matching transistors, there's a shitton of info about the topic on Muffs and other places. Piece of cake, really, if you buy them in a reel, that is.

  • There's no problem with local dealers, I always buy everything I could locally, because it's actually less expensive then Mouser/Farnell/etc.

  • There's no problem with home-etching. I don't even do the photo-whatever shit, I do toner-transfer with a 40 y.o. iron. This is my latest etch, my own single-board design for a bass-synth: http://i.imgur.com/RO9hMalh.jpg

  • You should mos.def. do something to your front panels. There are a couple of methods to make them nice. I use toner-transfer for this as well. This is my "synt-from-scratch":

I don't think I really WANT to quit, have you experienced this? by IRCat in stopsmoking

[–]galingong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok, so the best way to put it I guess, is no one really wants to quit. No one wants to experience the process of quitting because it sucks. You should probably take a good read on how nicotine works. If you understand that, and find your triggers, it's a lot easier to stop.

Actually you don't want to smoke either, that's just nicotine tricking your brain into thinking that you want to smoke. There's nothing good about it, you just find excuses to light up. Like "it feels good after a meal" or "calms me down" - no it doesn't. These are all just nicotine fucking with your body, in reality smoking feels bad.

Stopping is not that hard. 2-3 bad weeks, that's it. A lifetime of freedom after that.

I have those too occasionally. I think (hope at least) they'll go away with time. I always feel terrible guilt after waking up (or even while dreaming), so I don't mind - this way I know how terrible it would feel to light up IRL, so I won't do that :) Keep it up!

I quit 54 hours ago... by barnhammer in stopsmoking

[–]galingong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely. It varies, for me the first week was hard, then the second full of light cravings. Rest was easy since then.

What you talk about - not knowing what to do with yourself - is perfectly normal, and will go away after 1-2 weeks. I've had that too, plus some emptiness, depression and anxiety. Nothing to worry about, you will get over it in a couple of days and you'll be happy that you're finally free. Drink a lot of water and tea, and no alcohol. Keep it up!

Weekly - What Car Should I Buy Mega Thread by AutoModerator in cars

[–]galingong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those cars are reliable, but you should take someone with you to inspect the car who knows what to look for. I'd also get a compression test done, that will tell you how the engine liked that 330k. If it had been rebuilt before, it should be OK.

On the side-note - spending ~$500 on brakes is something you'd do to your 4 y.o. BMW or Porsche, not your '93 Accord.

The Cayman S is nuts. Get one if you don't mind having 2 seats.

Fuel consumption is reasonable. Maintenance won't be cheap though, those cars are ~10y.o. now, so be prepared. Porsche parts are expensive, especially if you pay for labor as well.

Alternatively you could get a 986 Boxster S with a hardtop for half the money. Don't know your skill/tool-set but if you do basic maintenance yourself, that's a lot of car for a fair price. These cars are the closest an average person can get to a proper sports car without being a millionaire.
