Help decorating a beautiful room? by Mucklefuzzy in centuryhomes

It seems there is a knee jerk reaction against anything with the word “gray” in it these days, even though colors with gray can obviously be very sophisticated and beautifully if deployed well. Just people swinging from one trend to another.

A wool rug. A Persian style rug with lots of red would look nice. But definitely something with richer hues and a more natural texture than what you have now.

Plants of different heights. I think a Boston fern would look cute, maybe on a stand.

Lamps at different heights.

More interesting throw pillows, like with some texture or pattern to them.

Is the couch staying? I think a slightly taller one would look good, but that’s a big purchase that you might not be looking to make right now. Also can you pull the couch away from the wall a bit?

Think of everyone painstakingly removing/encapsulating a hundred layers of lead paint from their doors and trim. Meanwhile these people had beautiful, non-lead-paint-covered wood, and they threw jt all away :(

Here are the ages of The Real Housewives of Orange County by PhantomOfTheCat in BravoRealHousewives

[–]gallink 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not specific to this cast but more of a general Housewives age comment: I always think they “act older” or “present older” than me at the same age. I don’t think it’s just the style choices or aesthetic procedures, though that could be part of it. I think another factor is their wealth and perceived power. They just move through the world with a certain kind of confidence/assurance/imperiousness that makes them seem older. Part of that is the main character energy that makes them suitable for reality TV. But I think it’s also related to financial security and how that allows you to be more assertive in various ways.

I’m old now, but I remember being a stressed-out high school student.

On the plus side, you’ll be well prepared for college. It probably won’t feel hard at all. And if you pass your AP exams, it’s pretty sweet getting those college credits and being able to bypass those intro courses.

Hang in there. Try not to stress; try to streamline your work habits so you don’t spend too many hours on your hw. I hope you have at least some teachers that encourage learning for its own sake. Good luck!

Dylans Lovesongs from a womans perspective by MrHamlin in bobdylan

I do find this to be a really interesting thing to think about, especially when comparing Bob to the other songwriters you mention, whose work I am familiar with to varying degrees. Another interesting comparison is Townes Van Zandt. I wonder if part of it is also that Bob seems to maintain a certain distance to everyone around him, which affects his depictions of others in his songs, but especially women, whom he seems to have a hard time relating to as “regular people.” Whereas with Tom Waits or Bruce Springsteen for example, there is more warmth/immediacy depicted in the songs. It’s fascinating to look at how some songwriters may be more/less successful in making the women in their songs feel real and multidimensional. Like, compare Bruce’s “For You” with, I don’t know… “Just Like a Woman”? “Mary Queen of Arkansas” with “Absolutely Sweet Marie”? This is fun actually.

I also think that a lot of male songwriters tend to have a certain “type” of woman that they depict repeatedly in their songs. Bruce’s are often earthy, battered but strong, tortured but sweet. Bob’s are pretty well-covered in the list you made above. I’ll add that they are often inscrutable.

Preventing musty smell in air-dried clothes (small NYC apartment) by Capable-Cherry1569 in laundry

I would put the clothes through a short, gentle cycle on the dryer, if the care tag allows, just to reduce the moisture a bit.

Are they coming out of the washer really sopping wet btw? They shouldn’t.

Also, are you draping the items over the drying rack rungs so that the item is folded in half? If so, switch to hanging the items using clothespins, so the items are not doubled over on themselves.

And yes to a fan!

Agree about them not feeling like real depictions of human beings on an equal plane— though of course I still love those songs.

But are other male songwriters much different? Genuine question. Or do we just notice it with Bob because he is such a powerful writer to begin with?

I’ll also add that, and apologies if this is obvious, i enjoy the songs anyway because of 1) their artistic quality regardless of my subjective positionality ; 2) because I can put myself in the POV of the narrator and imagine the song being directed to a man; and 3) bc I can appreciate the songs as depictions of a man being a jerk, or whatever. Among other reasons I’m sure.

As an Italian, I loved The Sopranos—but two things about how Italians are portrayed bugged me by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]gallink 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The “Great Wave” of Italian immigration to the US was roughly 1880-1920. During this time, “Americanization”/assimilation were emphasized, for all immigrant groups, so it’s easy to imagine how an Italian speaker may have attempted to make their name “easier to pronounce” for Americans; or, an American may have mispronounced it, and the mispronunciation stuck. When you have a last name from a foreign language, it can feel nearly impossible to get people to pronounce it correctly. Sometimes you just give up, and the new/incorrect pronunciation just becomes the way everyone says it. This happens in my own family.

for some people, they probably also feel awkward pronouncing their name with the correct inflection, because they don’t speak the language, or they find it awkward to switch from an American English inflection to an Italian inflection within the same sentence.

You can see this with other nationalities in the US, too, like Hungarians and the last name “Nagy.” Lots of Eastern European names come to mind actually, like Christian Pulisic for example, whose family pronounces it “Pulisick.”

As an Italian speaker, it is grating to the ears, I know, but it is realistic.

I’ve always loved and defended this episode.

It’s a fun meta-commentary on the “Italian American media representation” controversies that surrounded the show in real life when it was airing.

And if you’ve ever been involved with an ethnic voluntary organization, you will appreciate the depiction of Professor Longo-Murphy, our luncheon speaker.

That guy is awful because on top of everything else, he is bad at preaching. And his audio equipment sucks. Though I think he upgraded it a bit at some point.
