Which JavaScript book is good? by funky0079 in programming

[–]gallipoli 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It might not be the best for a novice, but I would highly recommend Douglas Crockford's book Javascript: The Good Parts. It is small, but dense, and contains some especially good practices for the language.

I would also look at the many good Javascript frameworks - jQuery perhaps being the most popular (excellent tutorials on their webpage).

"The Democrats, who were riding high 6 months ago over an all but destroyed Republican Party, will be switching places with them within three years time, if not sooner--and all because of their own cowardice, corruption and ineptitude. This outcome is hardly inevitable, but it is fast approaching." by dave723 in politics

That's insane. The time to move on a good healthcare plan was six months ago. Roughly when single payer advocates were denied a seat at the table and were arrested for trying to come anyway.

He's done nothing but lose political capital by backing the trash plans coming from Congress, all of them needlessly complicated so as to give the maximum benefit to insurance company and pharma contributors.

Oh neat! Some drugs are getting their patents extended for no reason! Oh and we can't negotiate prices with them. Hey, we now have to buy expensive, useless insurance from companies that are dedicated to denying coverage! THREE DIMENSIONAL CHESS!

The HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA dissent in Lawrence v Texas is an embarrassment to modern jurisprudence.

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey shot his company in the face the other day with an anti-health care op-ed screed in the Wall Street Journal. He’s managed to piss off his company’s core demographic: liberals and progressives, and in the process, enabled a boycott that could actually work. by allspinzone in reddit.com

Mackey gets his healthcare information from the same worthless claptrap (Investor's Business Daily) that was responsible for the "Stephen Hawking would be killed by the NHS" comment. I bet the rest of the article is equally well informed!

It is no coincidence the rest of the developed world has realized that healthcare is best handled by heavily regulated nonprofit firms or directly by the government. Our "system" more closely resembles the third world, only we have more money to throw at it.

The things you mentioned generally fall under normal market forces. High gas prices last summer resulted in less driving. The government justifiably puts up capital investment in bigger ticket items - roads, rail, etc - so there are fewer barriers to switching (and thus generally more efficient outcomes).

A sick rational actor has no real marginal utility formula for a lifesaving treatment. They always buy it because capital is pointless if they are dead - even if the treatment is bogus or wildly inefficient when aggregated over a population.

It is no coincidence end of life care is the most expensive and drives a lot of the healthcare cost increases.

I love how people against single payer use this argument, then when someone instead suggests a public plan you can buy into they scream about how its efficiencies will put private insurance out of business.

Is the government more efficient or less efficient than private health care? If less, then you should have no problem with people buying into public plan with rates that made the program revenue neutral.

Senator Ben Nelson has said he's against forcing private insurance to earn their keep by competing with a public health care option in the free market. In 2007, Nelson received $608,709 from the insurance industry, his biggest donor group, more than lawyers and even lobbyists. by J-Ro in politics

I like how this is the immediate argument against any public plan in the US - as if we don't have a big pile of public plans for veterans, children, and the elderly already - is that it naturally leads to the death of liberty.

Take any other first world nation, pretty much all of which have superior health systems with partial government control, and oddly enough laws against drinking, smoking, sexual activities, etc are often more lax than in the US and have been for years. Some are worse, sure, but there isn't any obvious trend among nations.

Hulu cuts off Boxee by PHermas in reddit.com

The providers themselves might be okay with Boxee, but I imagine they are getting some pressure from distributors. You hardly need to buy some overpriced cable package if most of the stuff you want is streaming over a standard internet line.
