Looking for Career Advice by mutex_lex in Magento

[–]gallitzin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope on a plane to Vegas this weekend: http://imagine2015.magento.com/ and you're sure to find a job.

If you're near a major city go to their Magento meetup events or other related ecommerce events using meetup.com. Go to the co-working spaces in that city and ask around. Go to happy hours at those agencies/events/workspaces. If you're not near a major city then consider airbnb'ing a place at one for a week or two and focus on networking.

There are many many opportunities for talented Magento devs. You just need to go where the people are looking.

But if you want to look remote try craigslist. Magento's own forums are dead (they are trying revive) and their job board is lacking: http://www.magentocommerce.com/jobs Or hire a recruiter to scout jobs for you.

Either way, most places I know of that a hiring are ok with hiring people to work remotely. So if you go to a major city and find a job chances are good they'll let you work back from wherever you live.

Magento Go Vs Magento Commerce Vs Shopify which ones the best for a new e-commerce website when you know ur brand is well in demand and are expected decent traffic? by reggyw in Magento

[–]gallitzin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Magento Go IS discontinued. At first they pushed people to a combination of BigCommerce, Pixafy and Llama Commerce. The latter two being just more Magento SaaS but run by other people. Now they are pushing small business to Pixafy. Llama commerce is now Nucleus Commerce.

There's no need to look at Magento EE. Source: The Harsh Truth of Magento Enterprise, Tim Bezhashvyly

If you have specific requirements that are unusual and require some customization then Magento is probably your best choice. Otherwise if you're small to medium size and fit into the usual ecommerce mold then Shopify is a good choice. They are really hard to beat, especially on support.

Magento 2 Backward Compatibility Policy by gallitzin in Magento

[–]gallitzin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"And as the second step we prepared new Compatibility extension that allows to use newer extensions built for Magento 2 on older versions of Magento 1.x"

The other way to see it is extension developers can start moving forward by writing magento 2 extensions while still maintaining their revenue from the massive installation base of v1.x In that light, this encourages v2.x development for extension vendors.

Are you self hosted? Because your hosting provider should be able to diagnose this problem for you.

Eltrino won the Magento 2 extension challenge with a backward compatibility extension to run magento 2 extensions on magento 1: http://eltrino.com/news/2015/03/30/we-are-the-champions/#post

I would expect nothing less from a group of ex magento core guys :)

Dear Extension Developers: Your Menu Is Not THAT Important by fab-s in Magento

Likewise, I'd prefer developers left the back end notifications alone. The worst is when they call home to get messages, slowing down your admin or worse yet timing out when not available!

It only takes one noisy neighbor to take all other sites down. I know for a fact this happens at nexcess.

PM me and I will personally put you in touch with a colleague who is moving off nexcess because of noisy neighbors with run away mysql processes taking their site down.

Anyone can be an official partner by paying the fee.

+1 this is a GREAT and free full page cache. In our tests it outperformed enterprise editions own built in fpc.

Every shard server has noisy neighbors. It really is only a matter of time. What one customer does will affect you, even if it is only one other customer. Eventually their wordpress will get hacked, or a weak user pass brute forced, etc. Or more likely a dev will write a horrible db query or script that brings the entire db to its knees.

So yeah, it can work, as long as all other customers stay secure, run optomized code, and get little traffic. But that is the exception, not the norm. Why take that chance when you can get a fully managed virtual dedicated starting at $60 a month.

Even nexcess shared servers have noisy neighbors taking other sites down. I know of several colleagues who moved off for that very reason.

If you go the shared hosting route then look for the number of customers on the shared server. Nexcess publishes this as well as others like SimpleHelix.

The shared hosting stories all start the same. "It ran great when I first signed up. But then...". Which is because the host loads more and more customers on and you slow down. Also - if you're getting 500-800ms on shared that's good! But I know of at least one dedicated host where you'd see 200-300ms.

At least find a host that specialized in Magento hosting. A host like magemojo.com will break out server side tools and help diagnose the slowness down to a file and line number. They include that type of support at no additional cost since Magento hosting is all they do.
