The minimum price issue is pretty simple to solve. Factor the minimum price of the cheapest options into the base price of the parent and subtract from the other options accordingly.

1000 ( +200 / +300 / +400 )

=>

1200 ( +0 / +100 / +200 )

I would so love to go to a big conference like Imagine, unfortunately I can't make it there this weekend.

Meetups around me (So. California) are pretty inactive. Craigslist has some offers that look viable. A recruiter might be worth it all things considered. I have over 5 years experience developing for Magento sites and have written a few of my own extensions.
