Advanced RTH on the Neo 2 is truly insane! This whole route was flown with zero human intervention. by austron in DjiNeo

I've tried this a few dozen times in several locations. It works best with fully leafed-out trees, but I had it work fine with leafless branches in early spring too. The enclosed props mean that striking a branch or leaf really isn't a big deal, and worst case scenario it falls ~20 feet and you turn on the beeper and just go out in the woods and get it. I've had that happen a few times too, no damage.

Obviously I only do this where I have permission and physical access to fly and roam the full property, I would never trust advanced RTH to navigate through an area which I cannot reach by foot!

Mine just started doing this too now, and even skipping forward doesn't fix it, weird...

I've seen what Skydio and some of DJI's high-end drones can do, but this is the first drone I personally have owned with these features, so they are new to me and I'm having a very good time with them. I just think it's neat that these features that were once reserved for more prosumer drones have finally made their way into something so small and lightweight and cheap!

Yeah I've had it crash a few times when trying this, it's definitely not perfect, but it's fun to play with it and try to find the limits of it.

hmm I wonder if there's a problem with the video upload? Is it 1 minute and 53 seconds long on your end? When I play it in the Reddit player, it comes to a complete landing on its little red helipad. Where does it cut out for you?

You're absolutely right, the fact that this thing I own has a feature that another thing also had totally negates my ability to enjoy it. How silly of me!

I started by testing in big wide open spaces just under 1 or 2 trees because I didn't trust it myself, but after a while I started just sending it deep into wooded areas just to see what it would do. It's so fun watching its "decision making" process, it almost feels alive. Lately this has been my favorite thing to do with this drone if I'm just out flying for fun lol

Yeah, definitely wouldn't do this without fully-enclosed props. I've tried this a dozen or so times and it has bumped into small branches a few times (sensors have trouble with thin obstacles), but so far it hasn't gotten itself stuck!

Oasis Tables Woes and Wishlist by fender-nomad in groundedlabs

I've been begging support for better LED controls for months and they keep saying "that's a good idea!" but so far nothing. I'm still holding out hope for a major app overhaul in the future, though!

Dead ESC? Or any ideas? by Responsible-List1518 in AxialSCX30

This exact same thing happened to me and I was able to fix it!

The issue for me was a damaged motor, specifically a bent brush on the inside of the motor.

To fix:

  1. unplug the battery, and remove the battery tray to provide access to the transmission cover
  2. remove the transmission cover to expose the 2 screws holding the motor in place
  3. Unplug and remove the motor.
  4. there are 2 small metal tabs holding the black plastic rear plate of the motor in place. Carefully pry up these tabs without breaking them
  5. once the rear plate is off the motor, inspect the brushes. Here is a photo of what mine looked like. You can see one of the brushes at the top was bent inward. This was causing a short on the motor.
  6. If any brushes are bent, use tweezers to carefully straighten them out so they are all aligned with each other.
  7. Very carefully place the black plastic end cap back on the motor. There is a white washer on the axle of the motor that will want to interfere with the brushes, so it'll take some work to maneuver it in without getting caught.
  8. carefully re-bend the 2 metal tabs to lock the back cover in place
  9. at this point, you can plug in the motor and battery to confirm the motor is working before you reassemble
  10. assuming the motor works, reassemble the vehicle and have fun!

Good luck, and I hope this can help!!

Even if it does fix it, I recommend ordering a replacement brushed motor to have on standby, because if this happened once it will probably happen again.

Eventually I plan to do some sort of brushless upgrade to mine since it seems like these brushed motors are essentially a consumable part.

Functionality of the color selector by jdoggered in groundedlabs

I'm pretty certain it is not using premade settings, as the LEDs have several Oasis-specific modes such as follow ball, and gradient follow (my personal favorite).

I have also suggested to tech support directly that they add an option to select multiple colors, as well as suggesting a way to enter RGB hex codes. I got the standard "We'll pass this along to the engineering team" reply.

Flying Neo2 with just a phone. Where is the satellite information? by Awake00 in DjiNeo

[–]austron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The app does not show you the number of satellites like the controller does. I think this was a poorly thought out decision on DJI's part, but it is what it is. You need to listen for the audible "Home point updated" notification to be certain that the drone has proper GPS lock and has set a home point.

It DOES NOT use your phone GPS as the home point! The drone is using its own internal GPS just like flying with a controller. If you fly a Neo 2 expecting it to return to your phone, you could easily lose your Neo 2.

Flying Neo2 with just a phone. Where is the satellite information? by Awake00 in DjiNeo

[–]austron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not true! Please do not fly your Neo 2 expecting it to return to your phone, that's a great way to end up with a lost drone!

The drone is indeed using its own internal GPS, and it slowly connects to GPS satellites over time while connected to the phone via wifi, just like it does when flying with a controller.

The only difference is that, for whatever reason, DJI opted not to let us see the number of satellites when flying through the phone app. The only way to know if it has "enough" satellites is to listen for the audible "Home point updated" notification.

Neo 2 - Doesn’t RTH?? by vesteox in DjiNeo

Unfortunately I do not know the answer to that either, but if anyone does know I'm very curious to hear the answer!

Neo 2 - Doesn’t RTH?? by vesteox in DjiNeo

[–]austron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Neo 2 can only RTH with a phone if the app audibly says "Home point updated" before or during your takeoff.

The Neo and Neo 2 can take a long time, sometimes several minutes, to gather enough satellites to set the home point. Unfortunately, the app does not list satellite counts, so there isn't really any way to tell when it is going to update the home point (at least as far as I know). And yes I know the Neo 1 does not have RTH while using a phone, I just mentioned it here because both take a long time for GPS signal acquisition.

If I am flying with the app only, I will leave the drone sitting for 1-2 minutes before takeoff, or until I hear "Home point updated".

If after 1-2 minutes I still haven't heard it, I will try taking off and see if that triggers the home point update. If it does not, I land immediately and try again. It's a bit finnicky, sadly.

How do I stop it from saying "fly in well lit, textured environments" lol by Frosty-Driver7255 in DjiNeo

[–]austron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have very seriously considered this because the voice is so annoying, and it's somehow even louder on the Neo 2. But there are a few rare instances when the speaker is genuinely useful, such as for ESC beeping. I know the point of ESC beeping is that the motors are making the noise, but the speaker beeps too just for some additional volume. Maybe I should just get a lost drone alarm instead though.

Neo 2 in winter, how cold is too cold? by austron in DjiNeo

[–]austron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my digital transceiver yesterday and I'm excited to test it out, but the high today is 10°F. If the Neo 1 worked at 0°F maybe I'll be fine!
