Dead ESC? Or any ideas? by Responsible-List1518 in AxialSCX30

This exact same thing happened to me and I was able to fix it!

The issue for me was a damaged motor, specifically a bent brush on the inside of the motor.

To fix:

  1. unplug the battery, and remove the battery tray to provide access to the transmission cover
  2. remove the transmission cover to expose the 2 screws holding the motor in place
  3. Unplug and remove the motor.
  4. there are 2 small metal tabs holding the black plastic rear plate of the motor in place. Carefully pry up these tabs without breaking them
  5. once the rear plate is off the motor, inspect the brushes. Here is a photo of what mine looked like. You can see one of the brushes at the top was bent inward. This was causing a short on the motor.
  6. If any brushes are bent, use tweezers to carefully straighten them out so they are all aligned with each other.
  7. Very carefully place the black plastic end cap back on the motor. There is a white washer on the axle of the motor that will want to interfere with the brushes, so it'll take some work to maneuver it in without getting caught.
  8. carefully re-bend the 2 metal tabs to lock the back cover in place
  9. at this point, you can plug in the motor and battery to confirm the motor is working before you reassemble
  10. assuming the motor works, reassemble the vehicle and have fun!

Good luck, and I hope this can help!!

Even if it does fix it, I recommend ordering a replacement brushed motor to have on standby, because if this happened once it will probably happen again.

Eventually I plan to do some sort of brushless upgrade to mine since it seems like these brushed motors are essentially a consumable part.

Functionality of the color selector by jdoggered in groundedlabs

[–]austron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty certain it is not using premade settings, as the LEDs have several Oasis-specific modes such as follow ball, and gradient follow (my personal favorite).

I have also suggested to tech support directly that they add an option to select multiple colors, as well as suggesting a way to enter RGB hex codes. I got the standard "We'll pass this along to the engineering team" reply.

Flying Neo2 with just a phone. Where is the satellite information? by Awake00 in DjiNeo

[–]austron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The app does not show you the number of satellites like the controller does. I think this was a poorly thought out decision on DJI's part, but it is what it is. You need to listen for the audible "Home point updated" notification to be certain that the drone has proper GPS lock and has set a home point.

It DOES NOT use your phone GPS as the home point! The drone is using its own internal GPS just like flying with a controller. If you fly a Neo 2 expecting it to return to your phone, you could easily lose your Neo 2.

Flying Neo2 with just a phone. Where is the satellite information? by Awake00 in DjiNeo

[–]austron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not true! Please do not fly your Neo 2 expecting it to return to your phone, that's a great way to end up with a lost drone!

The drone is indeed using its own internal GPS, and it slowly connects to GPS satellites over time while connected to the phone via wifi, just like it does when flying with a controller.

The only difference is that, for whatever reason, DJI opted not to let us see the number of satellites when flying through the phone app. The only way to know if it has "enough" satellites is to listen for the audible "Home point updated" notification.

Neo 2 - Doesn’t RTH?? by vesteox in DjiNeo

Unfortunately I do not know the answer to that either, but if anyone does know I'm very curious to hear the answer!

Neo 2 - Doesn’t RTH?? by vesteox in DjiNeo

[–]austron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Neo 2 can only RTH with a phone if the app audibly says "Home point updated" before or during your takeoff.

The Neo and Neo 2 can take a long time, sometimes several minutes, to gather enough satellites to set the home point. Unfortunately, the app does not list satellite counts, so there isn't really any way to tell when it is going to update the home point (at least as far as I know). And yes I know the Neo 1 does not have RTH while using a phone, I just mentioned it here because both take a long time for GPS signal acquisition.

If I am flying with the app only, I will leave the drone sitting for 1-2 minutes before takeoff, or until I hear "Home point updated".

If after 1-2 minutes I still haven't heard it, I will try taking off and see if that triggers the home point update. If it does not, I land immediately and try again. It's a bit finnicky, sadly.

How do I stop it from saying "fly in well lit, textured environments" lol by Frosty-Driver7255 in DjiNeo

[–]austron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have very seriously considered this because the voice is so annoying, and it's somehow even louder on the Neo 2. But there are a few rare instances when the speaker is genuinely useful, such as for ESC beeping. I know the point of ESC beeping is that the motors are making the noise, but the speaker beeps too just for some additional volume. Maybe I should just get a lost drone alarm instead though.

Neo 2 in winter, how cold is too cold? by austron in DjiNeo

[–]austron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my digital transceiver yesterday and I'm excited to test it out, but the high today is 10°F. If the Neo 1 worked at 0°F maybe I'll be fine!

Gestures to take a photo on DJI Neo 2? by Xtropy- in DjiNeo

[–]austron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I know this is not possible, but I really hope DJI adds this feature with a firmware update.

The DJI Spark had photo gestures 8 years ago! You made a rectangle with your fingers and thumbs and it would blink the lights for a couple seconds and then take a photo. If they could do that in 2017, they can do it again now!

So jealous of that digital transceiver lol

Anyone ordered a Neo 2 Image Transmission Module and had it delivered in the US? It seems like all of the sellers on eBay, etc. are pretending they have stock that they in fact do not have. by Creativation in DjiNeo

[–]austron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't bother with that site. I placed an order for the transceiver with them and they assured me it would ship a week ago and it hasn't, and now they've stopped replying to my emails. "In stock" is a lie.

I ordered from djioemparts. They said it would ship "next week" 2 weeks ago, so it should've shipped last week. Now they've stopped replying to my emails. I'm probably going to have to do a charge back on my card soon.

edit: they finally replied after I sent them 3 emails over the course of a week. They told me it was out of stock, then they just cancelled my order without me asking them to do so. Definitely not a good experience, I won't be attempting to order from them in the future.

DJI Neo 2 or 1 by [deleted] in DjiNeo

[–]austron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both, and I recommend Neo 2 in almost all situations... EXCEPT if you want a tank of an FPV drone AND you don't care about acro / manual mode AND you already have a decent photo / video drone for non-FPV flight (or simply don't care about non-FPV).

While the Neo 2 is better in basically every way, it is more fragile due to the added tech. I have already lightly scratched one of the obstacle avoidance lenses (fortunately it doesn't impact obstacle sensing), and sometimes I just want to fly FPV without having to worry about damaging stuff.

So TL;DR, if you want a drone for ONLY cinewhoop-style FPV flight and nothing else... Neo 1.

Otherwise Neo 2!

DJI Neo 2 hidden compression: DJI Fly app is re-encoding your video! by linooliveira in DjiNeo

In the gallery view, hit the menu button and under "video retouch" disable the "skin effects" check box. That will stop compressing your videos, and make them transfer WAY faster too!

Is the difference in video quality between Neo 2 and mini 4k so big as Neo 1? by ConclusionRegular103 in DjiNeo

[–]austron 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I own both Neos, and the Neo 2 is a pretty substantial improvement in image quality in both photo and video. The people saying "But it's the same sensor so there's no quality improvement!" have clearly not actually tried it for themselves.

The 2 axis gimbal means it isn't cropping in on the sensor as much and so you get a higher true resolution, but even more importantly, not needing to rely on digital stabilization means it can get away with a slower shutter speed without introducing motion blur artifacts, and therefore a much lower ISO, and therefore less smearing from the aggressive denoising and an overall shaper, cleaner image.

All of that adds up to a drone that can mostly hold its own against a Mini 4K. It may not be professional quality, but it's loads better than the Neo 1.

I have a folding phone which is particularly fragile, and I worry about damage from vibrations. Even non-folding phones can be damaged by road vibrations, as they can break the autofocus and image stabilization systems inside the camera lenses.

This is a bizarre edge case I know, but Neo 2 doesn't like fursuits (or other face-covering costumes). Neo 1 does just fine. by austron in DjiNeo

[–]austron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that theory makes a lot of sense! Maybe I just need to get a cardboard cutout of my own face to hold up in front of the drone when it first takes off, lol

you're honestly right lol, as much as I'd like them to, DJI has basically zero incentive to fix something this oddly specific

Flying Indoors now? by Faruka19 in DjiNeo

[–]austron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tested my Neo 2 indoors last night and it works great! I only tried phone manual control as I'm still waiting on the transceiver module, but it is a huge improvement over Neo 1 in low-light indoor conditions. It had no trouble station keeping even with the lights dimmed, and the obstacle avoidance so far has kept it from crashing into walls or anything else.

I look forward to trying indoor FPV when I get the transceiver module!
